Jim McGee scored two
goals Friday night ' as the
Wingham Royals handed the
skaters 'from "Cyclone"
Taylor's birthplace, the Tara
Cyclones, a 5-2 defeat.
Both teams had several
good scoring chances in the
first period, but the goalies
at both ends of the pond stole
the show with brilliant saves.
The only goal of the period
was a power play effort as
Jay MacLaurin fed Jim
McGee breaking from the
corner and his quick back-
hander caught the upper
corner to send the Royals to
the dressing room ahead 1-0
after 20 minutes.
In the second, it was
Tara's turn to score with the
man advantage, as Sheldon
McLeod was left alone on the
edgeof the crease and an the
third try banged the puck
across the line to even the
count with the lone tally of
the period.
Heading into the third, it
was anyone's game. At 5:08
Tara surged into the lead as
Gordon Laver threaded a
screened shot. into the upper
left corner of the netting. -
McGee, with his second of
the game, evened the count
at 8:35 with Rick MacLennan
and Rick Jacklin assisting.
At 12:21 on the power play,
Randy Clarke capitalized on

WHISTLE STOPS — Just
prior to game time it looked
like this would be no game as
Tara arrived at the corner of
Victoria and Diagonal sans
goalie and sans goalie
equipment. Tara forward
Bruce Stark donned Royal
goalie Rick Smith's pads and
skates and the game got
underway.
For two periods, with the
assistance of wide goalposts
and missed Royal scoring
chances, Stark certainly
kept Tara in the game. At the
other end, Hugh Nichol was
back in rare form, playing
the angles with positioned
authority and a quick glove
or dartingpad to rob the
Tara attackers time and
time again as the tried to
cyclone his cord cottage.
Good game, Hughie.
On the attack, Jim McGee
was a shining star with a
pair of big goals — a just
reward for hard work every
time he hit the ice.
There was a bit of humor
in the second period as Royal
pressure had. goalie Stark
just a -sweating when a
teammate came to his
rescue by not only purposely
lifting the net off the posts
but tipping it right over onto
the ice. Stark could be seen
wiping the sweat from his
brow as the net upsetter got
a two -minute sit in the sin bin
for his efforts.
One of Tara's point men
was carried from the ice on a
stretcher in the third period
with a twisted knee. It is to
be hoped it was nothing
serious.
The Royals lost the serv-
ices for their game Sunday
at Lion's Head of Tom Irwin,
with -.a five-minute spearing
penalty. Rick Jacklin also
drew a five-minute high -
sticking call at game's end.
The Royals will host
Teeswater this Sunday 'af-
ternoon at 2:30 in what
should be a good game.

A RINGSIDE SEAT—Bruce Stark, drafted into the nets for Tara Cyclones Friday
night, had a fine view of the wrestling match as Royals'' Dave Golley found himself in
,the clutches of Tara's huge defenceman Dennis Plaskett. There wasn't much else for
Stark to do as a teammate had already removed the net from its moorings to relieve
the pressure.

With an all-out effort by
every skater, the Wingham
Royals came home from
Lion's Head on Sunday with
a one-sided 9-4 victory..
The Royals struck early
with two power play goals,
the -first at 4:02 by Rick
Jacklin and the second at
5:10 by Dennis , Knox.
Additional goals from the
sticks of Dave. Burns and
Dave Stephenson gave the
Royals a 4-0 lead at the end
of the first period.
Wingham raised the count
to 6-0 in the second. The first
goal was a pretty one,. with
rookie Brent Day tucking
one into the corner and the
second was a bullet blast by
Sandy Fitzgerald on the
power play.
Lion's Head hit the ice in
the third with a roar and four
quick goals — three of the
power play type — put them

lose to Wallace
The Wingham Optimist
Tykes traveled to Kurtzville
last Saturday . to play the
Wallace Optimist Tykes.
Even though the Wingham
lads gave it their best, they
were not able to penetrate
the Wallace defense. The
final score read Wallace, 2,
Wingham, 0,
The Wingham shooters
fought hard to force the play
to the Wallace end, but were
not given any skating room.
Wingham's defense played a
strong game and was
responsible for breaking up
several Wallace plays.
Neither team got many shots
on goal
Both teams were evenly -
matched and the Wingham
boys look forward to meeting
Wallace in the playoff round.
Advance -Times
defeats Staintons
The Advance -Times con-
tinued to play well last week
and defeated Stainton 6-2 in
Wingham Industrial Hockey
play. Bill Brophy had a hat
trick for the Advance -Times,
Dave Shaw had two and Jack
Ohm scored one for the win-
ners. Brian Lachance scored
both Staintons goals.
Crawfords scored four
unanswered goals in the
third period to defeat Bridge
Motors 5-1. The teams fought
to a 1-1 tie after twoperiods
before Crawfords broke it
open. Steve Thompson had
two, while Andy Keating,
Ross Roll and Bob Arm-
strong had one each for
Crawfords.
Terry Pautler scored
Bridges' only goal.
right back into the game.
However the Royals, anxious
for the win, rebounded with
three goals, a pair by Sandy
Fitzgerald and a single by
Randy Clarke, to _wrap up a
big 9-4 win..
WHISTLE`' STOPS — It
was a big win for the Royals
and winning in Lion's Head
always makes the ride home
seem much shorter. Sandy
Fitzgerald had a big day
with the hat trick, while
Dennis Knox picked up a
goal and three assists.
Coach Kerr switched Rick
Jacklin back to the blueline
in this one where he played a
whale of a game, especially
killing penalties in the
second period when he
loggeth no less than seven
minutes straight of ice time
as the Royals ran into a rash
of penalties....
Power play goals seemed
to be in style in this game,
with the Royals picking tip
four and Lion's Head
clicking for three.
This was the last game on
the road for the Royals, who
have two more home games,
one with Teeswater this
Sunday at 2:30 and the other
a postponed game against
Lion's Head with the date
and time still to be con-
firmed.
Loss to Arthur is
third for Midgets
After losing to Kincardine
in the Burford tournament
and to Brussels in a league
game, the Wingham Lions
Midgets lost their third game
in a row with a 5-4 defeat by
Arthur.
The first period belonged
to Arthur as it scored- goals
in the first and last minutes
to lead 2-0 after one.
•
The only goal of the second
frame was scored by
W.ingham's Bill Haines, as-
sisted by Doug Stephenson
and Jason Goodall at the 6:23
mark.
Titn Brown tied the game
for Wingham at the 11 -
,second mark of the third
period, assisted by linemates
Paul Kenyon and Paul
Robinson. Then Doug
McFarlan's goal at 3:05 from
' Goodall and Paul Tolton
gave Wingham a short-lived
3-2 lead.
Arthur pulled ahead to
stay with three tallies in a
row before Paul Kenyon's
goal with just seven seconds
left in the game, from Brown
and Jeff Bloemberg,
narrowed the final margin to
5-4.
ICE CHIPS — This was a
fine hockey game, featuring
end-to-end action and strong
goaltending by Arthur's Walt
Lesenke and Wingham's
Mitch Braun.
As anyone with an ounce of
sense realizes, exhibition
games and tournaments play
an important" part in any
team's development. After
playing against the same
surrounding teams for eight
years, bringing in clubs from
outside the local league
makes the games more
interesting for the players
and fans alike.
In league play against
local teams this year
Wingham Lions Midgets
have lost only two games and
outscored the opposition 165
to 70.
