The final result was Wingham 5, Seaforth' 1 as Wingham played one of its best games of the year, consistently staying on toil of the Seaforth skaters. Determination, excellent passing and strong goal- tending were the contri- buting factors. In the first period, Ryan Deyell scored a pretty goal, assisted by Robbie Harrison and Jason Bloemberg. Less than twq minutes later, Seaforth tied the game. Robbie Harrison scored midway through the second period, assisted by Scott Neil. With only nine seconds left in the second, Seaforth made a costly error in clearing the puck out of its end. The goalie apparently thoughthis club was going to clear the puck and started skating toward the bench, but Bloemberg intercepted. the pass and scored on the somewhat embarrassed Seaforthsquad. Scott Neil scored a picture goal assisted by David McKee. with- only one second left in the second period. The third period saw both teams play an exciting brand of hockey as Deyell, assisted by Harrison and McKee, rounded out the scoring while Seaforth was short- handed. The team's record now stands at 20 wins, 12 losses and one tie: The team is averaging 4.6 goals per game and the goals against is 2.8. The boys are playing an exciting brand of hockey. Legion Pee Wees win consolation at Durham The Wingham Legion Pee Wees capped off a successful. weekend by taking the consolation trophy Sunday night at the Durham Little Huskey Tournament with , a ,decisive 2=0 win over Arthur. Wingham opened its tournament action last Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Sullivan Township. Wing - ham's only goal came from Jeff Tolton, with Shawn Thompson drawing the assist. Thompson spotted Tolton behind the Sullivan blueline and hit him with a perfect pass to send Tolton in on a breakaway and he made no mistake in rifling ,a shot into the top corner of the net. Sullivan Township led 1-0 after one period and 2-0 after two. Atoms Tim Currie and Rob Harrison were sum- moned up for the game. In its second game, Wingham.nipped Howick 2-1 Sunday. This was an exciting game of -good hockey (only four penalties) with the short- handed Belmore team (eight players) taking on a full ros- ter from Wingham and com- ing tip winners with a good team effort and great goal- tending by Dwayne Bru- bacher. In the final game against Arthur, Wingham com- pletely dominated the play, limiting the opposing team to only seven shots on goal. Arthur's goalie, Trevor Henry, -made several -out- standing saves. Jeff McKee led Wingham by scoring both its goals, the first one assisted by Peter Strong, the second by Tolton. McKee's • second marker came with " only 2:25 remaining in the third period: There was jubilation following the game the team received a keeper trophy and individual crests. In an exhibition game last Tuesday, the local team lost a close 2-1 game to Mount Forest. Jason Coultes scored Wingham's only goal, assisted by Tolton. Wingham's first-year goalie;. Andrew Mann, is back in the line-up after suffering a back injury. , ICE -CHIPS•—Congrats to the Legion team 'on a fine "team effort" in Durham. In the last 270 minutes of hockey, the club has allowed only 12 goals against. Not bad for'Pee Wee hockey. Optimist Tykes thump Belmore The Wingham Optimist Tykes defeated Belmore 10-0 last Monday . night. Jason Moody, Wingham's goalie, earned , the shut out, while Matthew Elmslie (who shares goaltending duties with Moody) joined with` the Wingham defence. Atoms win one, lose one at Durham tourney The Wingham Optimist Atoms journeyed to Durham last Saturday to take part in -'that town's annual tour- nament. After winning their first game ,at 2 p.m. and getting into the cham- pionship round, the local boys did not play again until 8 p.m. when they •lost to Elora. It was a long day for the boys, however they represented the town well and should be proud of their efforts. WINGHAM, 2, MINDEMOYA, 1 Wingham's first game was against a good -skating Mindemoya club and not until the dying moments of th-e third period was the game decided, The local squad could not 'seem to get on track during the first two periods -and was behind 1-0 going into the third. As ' has bee►i" the case of late, Wingham came to life in the third period and put continuous pressure on the Mindemoya team. With just 2:57 left in the game, Dave McKee tied the score, the assist going to Rob McKay. Wingham continued to ap- ply the pressure. However, I.he Mindemoya goalie made some spectacular saves 'and The best thing to get out of exercise is rest. it appeared the game would go into overtime. But McKee .scored his second goal of the game with 17 seconds remaining on a fine passing play from McKaY and Anesh 'Bodasing. Barton Cameron opened the scoring for Wingham by slapping in an unassisted goal. Seconds later, Shane Pegg scored, assisted by Cameron and Jonathon Lane, followed by Cameron's second goal of the game at 2:34, assisted by Pegg and Lane. Pegg opened the scoring in the second period at 1:22 as he stepped over the Belmore goalie. He was assisted by Jonathon Balzer to make the count 4-0 for Wingham. Ken Hogg followed 11 seconds later with a goal, assisted by Murray MacLeod. He was the team leader throughout the game. Skaters prepare for interclub competition FORDWICH — Local skat- ers are preparing for the Blue Star Interclub Com- petition to be held Jan. 27 to 29 at the Hanover Coliseum. Those taking part Saturday in the free -skate competition from the Fordwich area are ' Sandra Bender, Laura Gedcke, Dallas Hilpert, Kendra Statia and Linda Wilson. Lane came out flying in the third and scored the first marker, unassisted. Then Lane dumped his second goal in, assisted by Balzer. Pegg wrapped up the scoring for Wingham at 2:12 with a goal, assisted by Cameron and Balzer. Throughout the game, the fans were kept guessing as the Wingham players were given the chance to play other positions. The final Belmore, 0. Sunday's x,arious dance competitions. The people of the corn- munity wish these girls good luck. The community is welcome to attend a figure skating demonstration which is to be held at the Howick Community Centre in Feb- ruary. The demonstration is being presented in con- nection with the Old Tyme Carnival. Howick Juniors blast Mariners After being snowed out of Southampton Friday night, Howick .hosted the Mariners Sunday afternoon. With Southampton short of players due to injuries and exams, Howick had no problem defeating them by a score of 12-2. Kyle Reading, Jamie Bradstock, Greg Douglas and Mark Leslie all counted two goals, with singles scored by Rob Drost, David Harding, Paul Charlebois and John Mock.' Other members of the team picking up points were Darwin Weber with two assists and Don Nickel and Dorren Foerter, also with two assists. Howick travels to Grand Valley this Friday and hosts the Markdale Mohawks on Sunday. The Juniors still have two games to get rescheduled,, plus a heavy weekend Feb. 3 to 5. Although Howihk is ex- pected to finish in one of the top three positions in the league, fan support has not been great during the past few weeks. Bridge club Industrial play results -hockey report Ruth Currie and.. Nona Elliott were first in last Thursday night's session of, the Duplicate Bridge Club. Janet Day and Wilfred French placed second, Mary Mathers and Jean Whitby were third and Kae Forgie and Jim Alcorn were fourth. Info required - - about tourney The Wingham - Midget Hockey Tournament is two months away, but here at The Advance -Times we, are gearing up for a special look into ;the history of the tourney to commemorate its 20th anniversary. Crawford Motors has clinched first place, doing so with a convincing 8-2 win over Stainton's. Goal scorers for Crawford's included Ross Poll, Pete Snow, Bob Arm- strong and Steve Thompson. ,Brian Lachance and Stanley Stapleton replied for Stainton's. Bridge Mustangs moved back into second place, beating the Advance -Timers 5-4. Rob Wharton scored the winner with seconds remain- ing in the game. Joe Le- mieux and Terry Pautler had a pair of goals each for Bridge. The Maclntyre boys led Advance, Bruce with two goals and Doug with one. Bill Brdphy had the other Ad- 4'ance goal.
