Howick Juniors win three straight
After losing the final game
to Grand Valley at the
Exeter tournament, Howick
returned home Wednesday
night to score a come -from -
behind 8-4 win over
Southampton. ..
The first period was all
Southampton's, as that team
scored three unanswered
goals.
After getting some time to
ponder, Howick came out in
the second and started to
skate and play its game.
Darwin Weber opened the
scoring" halfway throUgh the
period on a pass from Paul
Charlebois. Charlebois
netted the second less than a
minute later, deflecting a
shot from the point taken by
Mike McDougall.
Following some hard work
by Mark Leslie and Jeff
Fisk, Leslie tipped the puck
past the Southampton goalie
to tie the score. Jamie
Bradstock finished the
period's scoring, taking a
pass from Brian Cowan to
send the teams to the
dressing room with Howick
up by one.
Danny Nickel, who had
just been sighed over the
weekend to again fill the
roster, opened the third
period with two goals. The
first one came on a three-
way passing play with
Charlebois and Leslie and
the second on a power play
with Charlebois and John
Mock assisting.
Leslie netted two more
before the period ended, with
Charlebois picking up two
more assists. Danny Nickel
also assisted on the last goal.
Both Charlebois and Leslie
had big -nights, picking up six
points and four points
respectively. Nickel showed
he still has the ability,
picking up three points in his
first game.

Ironmen suffer double loss
at hands of Hanover Barons
By Peter Bauer
The Wingham Ironmen's
hopes for a first -place finish
in the Junior C Central
Division suffered a serious
blow on the weekend as they
dropped both ends of a
doubleheader to the Hanover
ions.
Friday night the Ironmen
droped a tough 3-2 decision
to the Barons at Hanover in a
game which either team
could have won. However
lady luck was not on the
Ironmen side.
Wingham then suffered a
6-3 loss Sunday as the Barons
played disciplined hockey,
• . shutting down the Wingham
offence for two periods and
then exchanging goals in the
third as they skated to a 6-3
win.
IRONMEN 2
BARONS3
Excellent goaltending was
the highlight id- Friday's
contest as the clubs created
excellent scoring chances at
both ends of the rink.
The Ironmen spotted their
_rivals a 2-0 lead on two give-
aways, then tied the game
with two second -period
scores before falling behind
by a 3-2 count at the end of
the period. The Barons then
relied on Scott -White in the
Hanover net to wrap up the
win as the Ironmen pressed
for the equalizer throughout
the third period.
Steve Reay opened the
scoring at the 8:34 mark,
intercepting a cross -ice pass
by Rob Willis, who fanned on
the pass as Reay swooped in
and blasted the puck high
over Rob Schistad's shoulder
on the glove side.
At 10:59, Brian Sweeney
made it 2-0 as the Barons, on
a line change, sent in both
forwards while fresh troops
hit the ice. The two forwards ,
double -teamed, checking
Len Stamper off .the puck,
and Sweeney's shot from
close range beat Schistad
cleanly.
Early in the second period,
Troy Pocaluyko moved in
along the right side and, -"
using his winger as a decoy,
slipped by a defender and
surprised White with a quick
"shot 'that beat him to the
glove side. Jim. LeGrand
scored a power play goal al•"
6:08, drilling a shot from the
blueline that found its way
behind White.
The game winner was
scored at 11:09 of the period
on a three-on-tw.o break.
Bruce McLaughlin took,_Pete
Goodall to the outside before
flipping a perfect pass to
Paul Nixon on the fly up the
middle. He tipped the puck
past Schistad, who had no
chance on, the play.
, The Ironmen tried
desperately to tie the score,
but White played superbly to
shut them out in the third
period.
