chair be worth as much as a
solid -walnut cane -bottom
chair that is. twice as old? I
note that you have' priced
both in the $100 to $150 range:
A: You are right! Both
chairs should not be worth
the same. However, if collec-
tors are willing to pay over
$100 for a pressed -oak chair,
I have to report that: Person-
ally, I would rather have one
cane -bottom walnut, chair
than a whole set off pressed -
oak chairs.

Mirror magic
expands room
By Barbara Hartung
Q. I am terribly depressed
because I don't have an at-
tractive dining room in my
new condo. All I have is a
dining space at the end of the
living room.
Please suggest how to cre-
ate a fresh atmosphere for
dining in a relatively small
space.— R.N.
A. Consider the use of mir-
rors to expand your dining
area — in fact, your whole
room.
Use mirror strips if .you
can afford to and cover the
whole wall. Of if that is too
much on your budget, try al-
ternating strips and walls.
Or consider the use of a very
large wall mirror."
Don't weight down the
room with heavy draperies.
Instead use fluffy sheer
floor -to -ceiling curtains.
If your dining furniture is
. nondescript . and not valu-
able, consider painting it a
color that will blend with
your living room decor. Add
a particularly. dramatic fab-
ric for the tablecloth ; and
Chair cushions. '
Place an attractive and
lacey ficus in front of part of
the mirror to enhance the re-
flection.
Q. I'm wanting to remodel
my bathroom and I expecial-
`ly wanted a round window.
However, 1 find the con-
struction cost of converting'
my rectangular . one into a
round design is prohibitive.
I am something of a. do-it-
yourslefer but not that ac-
complished. Do you have any
suggestions on a next -best
solution that will give me a
dramatic window? — P:C.
atic black and deeply toned dining table cloth. Sheer
curtains and off-white modular sofas from Stratford
lighten the room. Wear -dated carpeting is by Bigelow.
- A. I have seen the look of a
round window created' by 'a
wooden frame.
Measure a piece of light-
weight plywood the size of
your window. Frame the
window with wood and hinge
the plywood to it. Before at-
taching the two, cut out as
large a circle as you can ac-
commodate, considering the
size of the window:
Thin horizontal venetian
blinds can be used inside the,.
wood frame to control light
and privacy.
You can do all sorts of dra-
matice things with the frame
.and the blinds using a vari-
ety of colors.

A: This was made by
Amphora Porzellanfabrik,
operated by Reissner, Stell-
macher and Kessel in Te-'
plitz, Austria: It dates back
to the late 19th century and is
,worth from $175 to $225.
Q: We purchased this "an-
tique" mirror at an estate
sale rfor $100. It is gold leaf
and in excellent condition.
Can you,tellLus when it was
made, and if we got a bar-
gain or got carried away hi
the heat of the bidding?
A: You got a bargain! This
is a Victorian Renaissance
Revival mirror made in the
third quarter of the 19th cen-
tury. Am ,.antique dealer
would price this at $1,200 to
$1,500 (providing it • is gold
leaf and not giltpaint) .
Q: I find it alt,very confus-
ing. For example, you price
some plates 100 to 150 years
space. w
I have some space in one
unused corner of the room
but it isn't quite enough for a
table and chairs. I'd like to
be able to seat four people.
The space is not in a place
that would make it good for a
breakfast bar because the
space is square. What would
be a good plan?—.L.G.F.
A. Perhaps you have the
space for a built-in banquette
to provide the seating on two
%sides, attached to the walls-,,
A small table to fill in the L -
shape and two additional
small chairs would take less
space visually. Or perhaps,,
the built-in seating could
provide four places without
the need for chairs.
old as low as $25; others you
say are worth several hun-
dred dollars.
Why shouldn't two plates
of the same vintage be worth
- the saine'price?.
A: In the first place, I don't
create prices, I report them.

Did you know that the
history of the earth can be
told in fossils?
There are certain species
of animals which seem to be
eternal. The lowly ant is one
of these.
It was a mere 100 million
years ago when an ant busi-

trunk was overwhelmed by
a small globule of resin, and
became encased in the clear
brownish substance forever.
