Here's
How
By Gene Gary
Q. Our furniture has a
buildup of wax from using
spray polish over the years.
Is there anything I can use to
remove this wax accumulh
tion? — M.C.S.
A. Over the years, an ac-
cumulation of wax and or oil,
oil stains, grime and dirt
may build up to the point
where no amount of repolish-
trig revives the mellow
beauty of the wood.
To clean away that heavy
buildup, you will need
several soft clean cloths and
2/ a supply of mineral spirits
(paint thinner). Saturate a
cloth with mineral spirits
and rub briskly in direction
of the wood grain. Work on a
smalrarea at a time. Dry
with a 'clean cloth before
moving to the next area.
Soil left behind by the
mineral spirits often can be
removed with a cloth damp-
ened is sudsy water'. Rinse
with a fresh cloth dampened
in clear water and wipe dry.
Finally, apply wax or an
oil -base polish.
Here is an important
warning: Mineral spirits, a
'highly flammable solvent,
should be used with great
care. Keep windows open as
you work. Follow all safety
precautions listed on the
.label.
Q. Our sand adobe -colored
porcelain bathroom sinks
have roughened, discolored'
oval marks where soap or
soap dishesmust have pre-
viously sat. Do you have a
suggestion for restoring this
surface to its former color?
— Mrs. Ralph T. 4
A. To whiten a porcelain
sink or bathtub, fill it with
lukewarm water, add a little
chlorine- bleach and let itaild
for a while': • '
For very deep stains, mix
cream of tartar and hydro-.
gen peroxide to a paste and
scrub hard with a hand
brush.
The results are usually
satisfactorY. However, stub-
born stains can often be re-
moved ' with a solution of
oxalic j acid applied with a
dish mop.
Because of the roughened
surface, the finish may be
damaged and cannot• be'
completely restored.
Q. Some time ago I re-
moved varnish from the top
of .a table with varnish re-
mover. After the remover
had loosened the varnish, I
scraped off the old finish
with a putty knife.
This time I intend to take
the finish off a piece of furni-
ture that has some carvings
en it. How do 1 get into the
grooves? — Andy J.S.
A. After the remover has
done its work, use a stiff
bristle toothbrush to scrub
into 'the grooves. This will
-take off -the finish as, effect-
ively as the putty knife does .
on flat surfaces.
Q. I have difficulty filling
the pores of grainy wood
such as walnut and oak.
When I follow the directions
and wipe across the grain, it
leaves little filler in the
pores. What am I doing
wrong?
' A. Probably you are either
wiping the filler too soon
after application or using too
much pressure when wiping.
The real trick is in mixing
the filler to proper consist-
ency, slightly heavier than
thick creain. Apply with a
biush, spreading it quickly
and uniformly.
If the, wood is perfectly
flat, somefinishers "strike
off" ^the surface with a
straightedge to remove ex-
cess filler.
Do not begin wiping until
the filler has set, which will
require from 5 to 15minutes,
When all the sheen is gone
from the surface and it has a
flat appearance, rub lightly
across the grain with a piece
of clean burlap.,
If it shows atendency to
stick, moisten the cloth with
a few deops of turpentine.
Continue rubbing with
straight back -and -forth
strokes across the grain until
all excess finer has -been re-
moved.
Do tot use too much pres-
sure Since this will tend to
pull the finer out of the
pores. Allow 24 to -_48 hours
drying time.
