Rockers split
weekend action
By Fraser Strong
The Wingham Oldtimers„
Rockers clnb-saw action last
Saturday and Sunday and
split those games, winning 3-
2 over Palmerston, but
landing on the bottom end of
a- 3-2 count to Hanover.
In a game played in the
Wingham arena last
Saturday, Hanover came out
flying with an effort to
avenge a previous loss to the
Rockers. On the other hand,
Wingham seemed listless
and heavy-footed with only
occasional flashes of offence
in the game.
Hanover's Arthur opened
the scoring one minute and
45 seconds into the first
period when he was set up in
the slot by Graham. Three
minutes later, Rob Laurie of
the Rockers picked up the
puck near centre -ice,
maneuvered around 'two
players, slid the puck
through the legs of a third, ,
then slid a pass out to Wayne
Brown who deposited the
disc behind :the Hanover
goalie.
The second period saw
only one goal; that one going
to Hanover at . 3:07.
Wingham's defence stood up
well, anchored by a stellar
out one of- their best per-
formances•of the season. It
was like going from night to
day as the Rockers units
cred many loose pucks
and 'finally a goal .off the
blade of Laurie on passes
from George Skinn and John
Cullen at 7:12.
However, Hanover refused
to die and regained a one -
goal lead with six minutes
left in the game. Wingham
pressed hard for the
remainder of the game, but ,
couldn't get the equalizer.
In Palmerston Sunday
night, the majority of the
Wingham team showed
fatigue from the previous:,_
night's game and its "after -
game festivities". Although
the Rockers managed to beat
Palmerston' 3-2, it was
largely a slow-moving affair
with many missed passes
and mental errors.
Dave Magee opened the
scoring for Wingham after a
fine effort and 'a pass from
Len Houghton. Palmerston
tied the score before the end
of the first period.
• the Rockers went ahead 2-
