Score 33 goals in three games Wingham Lions Midgets capture Arthur tournament The Wingham Lions Midgets turned on the scoring power last week at the Arthur Midget Tour- nament, scoring no less than 33 goals in three games and winning the tournament. Last Tuesday, Wingham boarded the bus for Arthur at 11 a.m. and returned at 2:30 the next morning .:with two wins under their belts: In its opening game -of the,ttour- nament, the Wingham squad completely dominated Burlington and handed that team a 13-3 loss. Paul Tolton played one of his best games of the season as the lanky winger picked up a hat trick. Doug Stephenson, playing his first -game of the season with Wingham, also had a three -goal night. Defen- semen Jeff Bloemberg'had a pair of tallies for Wingham and singles went to Jason Goodall, .Doug McFarlan, t:fie}}:}r,5i>Sfus.i:•+`. ra 1 MOST_ VALUABLE PLAYER for, the Wingham Lions in Paul Robinson, Tim Brown and Jamie Robinson. Goodall picked up no less than five assists, turning Ma great performance. Murray Skinn played a solid game in the Winghaln net; coming up with some good saves for the winning cause. The final score was Wingham, 13, Burlington, 3. During the day, the tournament schedule fell behind and Wingham took to the ice against Acton at 11:30 p.m. If the Wingham boys were intimidated by playing against a much larger centre,Tthey certainly didn't show it, as they had ai 4-1 lead by the end of the first period. Tolton had a pair of goals for Wingham with singles going to McFarlan and Goodall. By the end of .'.the second, Wingham had increased its lead to 7-2 on a pair of goals by Paul Kenyon and Goodall's second of the game. ' In the third period, Acton decided to "goon it up" and took a rash of penalties. Wingham scored three more goals with Goodall,,, Stephenson and Murray' Houghton doing the honors.. The final score read Wingham, 10, Acton, 2. Wingham► returned last Saturday to play Arthur, the winner of the Arthur- Bleinheim-Walkerton and Mount Forest series. This was a real team effort with all. three lines coming up with solid efforts and the goal - tenders, Skinn and John Tweddle, playing their hearts out. Defenseman Dennis was outstanding, especially in the Arthur game, as he dished out some bone - crunching checks. ' Bloem- berg continues to impress with his hockey sense and natural ability. And Stephenson certainly made an impression on the op- position goaltenders as he took up residence in their goal creases. • Houghton was taken to the Fergus hospital with a neck injury sustained in the Arthur game. Riding ,high on their number one ranking in the Central group, they perhaps took the lowly.Mustangs too much for granted and almost ended up losing the game. Clinton enjoyed a"2-0 first period lead and built it to 4-0 midway through the second period before the Ironmen began their comeback. Brent Daw combined` with Tom Smith to open the scoring at 7:34 of the opening stanza. Before the end of the period, Smith made it .2-0, this time teaming up with Tony Gibbings. The Mustangs started quickly in the second period, - with Gibbings connecting at j, the 48 -second mark on the power play, 'with Daw and - Smith drawing assists. At 7:35, Kevin Lee beat Rob Schistad to make the score 4- 0, with. the Ironmen struggl- ing desperately. With 1:20 left on the clock, Kevin Coultes beat Pat Cronin to give the Ironmen a big lift going into the dressing room between periods. The momentum of the late goal carried over into the final frame, as Coultes scored two more times to record a true hat trick with goals at 9:16 and 9:43. Steve Nicholson scored the equalizer late in the period to help salvage a very im- portant point. With Port Elgin and Kincardine still very.close.behind,.the failure to pick uptwo points against Clinton could prove costly as the schedule winds down. t Pee Weesdrop two, CEA MONfAL FACE-OFF—James H. Howick scored a goal each in the first and second periods and added two more in the third before Wingham was ;able..= to- get -onto- the scoresheet: Scoring for Howick were Phillip Liver -- more, Ian Gibson, Andrew Weber and Kyle Wheeler. . 'The lone Wingham goal was scored by Peter Poulin, assisted by Dave McKee. On Dec'. 21 the Atoms hosted Teeswater and, as is customary when these two teams meet, the game was not decided until the final. buzzer. • Scott Neil. opened the scoring in the first, period, with assists by McKee and Rob MacKay. " McKee, scored early in the second, assisted by Neil and MacKay, to give Wingham a 2-0 lead. However Teeswater got one back before Ryan. Deyell scored for Wingham 'with assists from Chris Heibein and Dean Tolton. In the third, Teeswater came out flying and scored two quick goals to tie the score. However the Wing- ham squad never quit work- ing and MacKay made a per- fect pass to Neil who scored with 20 seconds remaining to clinch , the victory. The two teams treated the spectators to a fast and clean 'ho key ga%ne l aim; i�v the game by an 11-4 score; —led -by the three -goal per- formance of -Jason-iGroodall, and strong goaltending -by Murray Skinn and John Tweddle. All in all, it was an exciting day for :both teams: Munk- sund players were taken on a tour of.CKNX, then both teams were treated to dinner at. the T}irnberry Tavern, courtesy of the Wingham, Minor Hockey Association. Hoping for a good showing, they were bolstered by ant -6 win over their league rivals, the Port Elgin Bears. Unfortynately, their. loon was was soon to burst as Dresden crushed them 9-1 on Friday and they came up short against Keswick, dropping a 6-4 decision Saturday. "+ IRONMEN 3 — BEARS 6 Troy Pocaluyko led the Ironmen attack, scoring three goals in the 8-6 win. The .Irorimen enjoyed ,a 4.1; first period lead, then held a 6-3 margin after two periods en route to the win. Rick Scrimgeour; Jim LeGrand, Kevin Coultes and Pocaluyko all scored for the 1i'Zinne side hi the first, while Dave Kuhl replied for the Bears. Len . Stamper and Paca- luyko added power play markers in the second, with Doug Bartlett and Bill Jacques countering for Port Elgin. , •In the final frame, Ron Schistad and Pocaluyko rounded out the Wingham scoring, with Brian Lush, ,.Steve CanOn and Kuhl scoring for the Bears. DRESDEN 9— WINGHAM t The 'Ironmen _ ran ' into_ a superior club in this match, enduring ,a 9-1 thrashing. Ron " Horvat and Ron Goodhand led the Offensive • thrust for Dresden with three .,goals each. Horvat also set up two goals, while Ken Hornick had a hand in set- ting up five goals. Dresden held a close 2-0 lead after one period of play on pals by Goodhand and Carl. McDonald. The margin remained the same after second period action with the score 3-1,, s.rHorvat scored for Dresden while „Rick Schiestel got .the lone -Wingham marker. The Wingham .Legion Pee Wees dropped two games at the Ayr Tournament during the Christmas break. Wingham was nipped 3-2 by Rockton in the first game. Wingham goals were scored. by Jeff McKee and Jeff Tolton. Jason Coultes assist- ed on both goals. Chris Fryfogle was the talk of the arena following the game. He made, several miraculous saves to keep his teammates in the contest.. In the Second game, the Wingham boys could not find their scoring touch around the net and were.. shut out 2-0 by Plattsville. The Wingham boys won the game 6-2, taking the consolation prize. In the first period,_ Rick Leachman scored unassist- ed. Doug Cerson got the sec- ond goal, assisted by Jamie. Pickering, and Wingham's third goal was scored by Steve Templeman on an as- sist by Jason Moore. Paul Edwards ended the 'first period scoring on an assist by Dwayne `Hickey.
