Santa's workshop

Similarly, other workers were no-
ticed to have markedly turned -up
noses, a condition caused either by
the toxins in the paints used on the
toys or by riding English tack.
Many were noticed to have ex-
tremely long feet, curled up at the
ends, and their long stocking -style
caps covered tiny heads that grown
to a point after centuries of slaving
in tiny poorly lit rooms too close to
the magnetic pole.
They reported that other than the
fish they could could catch on their
short breaks away from their work-
benches, they subsisted on a diet of
curdled milk and stale cookies
brought back by Claus on the one
night he was away from the plant -
the one night of the year they had
off. They jokingly referred to them-
selves as elves and laughed ruefully
about the time they had gone on -
strike for better working condi-
tions.
"You know the garden gnomes at
White Rose? They were the union
organizers," said one elf, who
asked to remain nameless for fear
of spending eternity among the
azaleas in Avonlea.
"And Rudolf? He used to play
reindeer games until he took to
sniffing solvents and grew a schnoz
that puts the Northern Lights to
shame. At least Donner and Blitz-
krieg - that's his real name - have
managed to stay straight." And
what about Santa, St. Nicholas,
-Sinter- Klaas, Father Christmas and
the other aliases that the Big Boss
goes under?
"You know he comes from Tur-
key originally, eh?" the elf told the
investigators. "It's hardly a paragon
of industrialized nations.
"Anyway, he wasn't really all
that bad - his wife's the one you
gotta watch out for - until Clement
Clark Moore wrote that poem about
the night before Christmas. Jeez,
for the past 172 years he's been go-
ing on and on about being a jolly
old elf and shaking like a bowlful
of jelly. He believes his own pub-
licity and all the time the produc-
tion quotas go up and it's hard to
get more kids to come here volun-
tarily. (You know those kids pic-
tured on the milk cartons? Most of
them are working here now.
- Old Mrs. Claus goes out and re-
cruits them. Her theme song is
Stalk the Malls.) "The old guy
treats his elves the way Snow
White treated her dwarves. Always
asleep and letting the little guy do
the bullwork. Every once in a while.
he comes up with a brilliant idea
like last week when he wanted to
combine girls' fashion dolls with
boys' action figures and came up
with the Klaus Barbie doll. Even
Mattel wouldn't touch that one. "So
most of the time he just sleeps and
signs marketing and distribution
deals with the big toy makers.
"And what do we get? Another
day older and deeper in debt."
Merry Christmas.
