Christmas celebration BELGRAVE--The Sparks and Brownies held their Christmas par- ty at the community centre '.on Thursday, Dec. 14. The girls en- joyed playing games and singing Christmas carols. Gifts were wrapped up for all of the people who had helped out with Brownies and Sparks. At the con- clusion of the evening, the girls had a snack and each was given a treat to take home_ Tomorrow evening. Dec. 21. the - Brownies. Despite the storrrry weather, the room was filled- Gordon Koster was the emcee. The nursery class, taught by Liz Alan and Vicki Sturgeon started the program with "Ring the Bells". Nikki MacDonald entertained with a piano solo, "Deck the Halls". Dyan Perry performed two dance routines, one ballet and the other jazz. Susan Burchill's class recited "Animals on Christmas Eve" fol- lowed by a humorous play by Do- reen Wintemute's class. The entire school sang "Hark, the Herald An- gels Sing", "Hear the Good News" and "What Is Christmas Without Jesus?". Laura Sturgeon played two pia- no solos, "Joy to the World" and "0 Christmas Tree". Juke Pyke put on a comedy play entitled "Back- stage at the Christmas Pageant" Alisha Burchill sang "I Love To Celebrate". Rev. Jeff Hawkins and the Sun- day School superintendent, Mrs. Wintemute, recited and acted an- other funny play entitled "The Great Parking Space Race". The star of Bethlehem was the theme of the Christmas story with the entire Sunday School singing carols and readings from the Bible. Narrating this were Brandi Burchill, Nikki MacDonald and Meagan Willough- by with spotlights highlighting the angels, shepherds and wisemen. Seals and diplomas were award- ed by the minister. Thank-yous were made by the superintendent, especially to the emcee, Mr_ Kaster. A short song was sung by Rev. Hawkins and Mrs. Wintemute entitled "A Music Director's Appreciation Song". To end the night a candy bag was handed to all the children. Maitland Institute Society The winter weather played havoc with our Christmas programs last week at the Wingham Area Sen- iors' Day Centre, forcing us to close last Monday and Tuesday. Remember to listen to the radio for announcements of closures. The wonderful aroma of turkey cooking greeted us each morning as we arrived at the centre. Delicious turkey dinners were served each day to clients and volunteers. In the afternoon, we enjoyed entertain- ment provided by local schools. We extend thanks to the tearhers and pupils from Turnberry Central, Sa- cred Heart and the Lucknow Cen- tral Public School for showing the spirit of Christmas in song_ Our annual Christmas party will be held Dec. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m_ This is a chance for everyone to en- joy special entertainment, Christ- mas caroling, socializing and re- freshments. Warm wishes for a Merry Christ- mas are extended from everyone at the seniors' day centre. Chalmers Women's The Maitland Women's Institute met at the Wingham Armouries for the Christmas meeting on Dec. 5 for a potluck supper. Grace was sung and a delicious dinner was en- joyed by all. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved- It was moved by Helen Daugherty and seconded by Doris Bushell that the WI pay for a Remembrance Day wreath_ The roil call was answered by members telling what they would like Santa to bring them for Christ- mas. The motto was: It is better to give than to receive. Each member was asked to con- tribute a number to the program. There were several readings and poems. Doris Walker and Ethel Ad- ams entertained with a medley of Christmas songs as all joined in a sing -song. Linda Hollinger sang and performed to "I Can See Clear- ly Now". WHIT'ECHURCH-The Chalmers Women's Missionary Society held its December meeting last Tuesday. Dec. 12, at 1:30 p.m. Dessert was served prior to the meeting at 2 p.m_ Mildred Purdon was the leader. She gave the call to worship from the Christmas service in the Glad Tidings. The service was followed by different readers taking part. and Christmas carols ,ung throughout the service. Kathleen Elliott presided for the ~usiness and Norma Rintoul read the minutes. The roll call was an- swered by seven members with their Christmas wishes. Mrs. Purdon, on behalf of the la- dies, thanked Mary Simpson for her help over the years in the WS. Mrs. Elliott presented her with a gift. Mrs. Simpson is transferring her membership to the Presbyterian resides in Wingharnas she in Wingham now. The next meeting is at Rev. and Mrs. Neilson's in January. Mrs. El- liott closed the meeting with a Russell Foxton wins Lions Club spree Rliss Foxton of Wingham was the winner of the Lions Club of Wingharn three-minute shopping spree draw held last Tuesday. He collected about $214 in gro- ceries on Monday, at Brian's valu- mart_ Other winners included Kerry Stuckey of London, a $25 gift cer- tificate from Bakelaar Jewellers; Debbie Greenaway of Wingham, a S25 voucher from Wingham Drive - In Cleaners; Jayne Skinn of Wing - ham, a 5D -litre gas voucher from Barry's Service Centre; Lewis Lap - page of Bluevale, a dinner for two at the Great China House restau- rant; and Mary Campbell of Wing - ham, a $25 gift certificate from Hanna's Men's Wear. Christmas meeting held Dec. 13 for Whitechurch WI WHrrECHURCH--The Christmas meeting of the Women's Institute was held on Dec. 13 at 12 noon with 13 sitting down to a Christmas dinner at the Maitland Restaurant in Wingham. After the meal, everyone went to the home of Marjorie Wall in Wingham for the meeting. The president, Jean Ross, opened the meeting with usual exercises. She also gave two short readings. "The Busy Innkeeper" and "'This Holy Night". Jean Tiffin read the minutes and correspondence. The roll call was bring a stamped Christmas card and a grocery item - for the Christmas Bureau. The Christmas program included a reading by Helen Currie, a Christ- mas story by Norma Rintoul and Gordon Wall played some selec- tions on his violin with Agnes Far- rier and Mary Hehn accompanying.
