Ironmen overpower Bulls
following two-week layoff

A two-week layoff did not ap-
pear to hurt the Wingham Ironmen •
Friday evening as they over pow-
ered the Brussels Bulls 9-2 in
Western Junior. 'C' Hockey
League play at the Lockridge Me-
morial Arena.
The Ironmen started off slug-
gishly, as the Bulls ,opened the
scoring on a power play. But, then
the Ironmen were able to pick up
the intensity a bit more as they
took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of
play. . .
The Bulls netted the first goal of
the second period, but beginning
with a power play marker by Jason
Becker, the Irontpen tallied four
second period goal's to hold a com-
fortable 6-2 lead going into the fi-
nal period. '
Jamie Thomas took over in the
Brussels net in the third period, as
the Ironmenadded three unan-
swered markers to post the 9-2
win.
Tim Beyer opened the scoring
for the Bulls at 5:06 of the first pe-
riod as his lbw, hard shot from the
point found its way through a

ber. Corey Bridges and Ryan Kip-
fer earned the assists.
Chris Buchanan . then tallied a
pair of goals to give Wingham the
lead after one. period. His first
came at 8:25 as he. got into the
clear and drilled a shot past start-
ing Bulls netminder Jamie Taylor. ,
Becker- and Eric Sikkenga re-
' ceived assists. Buchanan's second
marker came on the power play at
17:57as he scored from the, slot
after being fed a pass by Justin
Murray. Kyle Wheeler also earned
an assist.
Just 1:21 into the second period,
the Bulls evened . the score when
Brandon Alviano's hard shot from
the boards got past Schwartzentru-
ber. Brian McNichol and Ryan
Wright earned the assists.
Becker put the Ironmen in front
to stay at 5:33 of the middle stanza
as he shot the rebound from Brad
Anderson's point shot past Taylor.
Brett Sangster also received an as-
sist.
Just over a minute later, Brent
Williams scored from a goalmouth
scramble With Tim Schultz and Ja-
son Thompson earning assists.
At' the 13 minute mark, Nic
Goetz gave the Ironmen a three -
goal advantage when he scored
with a shot from the point. Sang-
ster and Wheeler earned assists.
Murray tallied an , unassisted
marker at 15:45 as, he bulled his
way through the Brussels team and
into the clear,. beating Taylor on the
stick side, to give the Ironmen a
four -goal lead going into the final
period.
Wingham opened up a six -goal
lead with a pair of goals two min-
' utes apart. Eric Andrew scored at
2:10 with help from Wheeler and
Brad Robinson and then Sangster
scored from Murray and Wheeler.
Sangster concluded the scoring
at 12:22 with Murray and Ander-
son earning assists.
Schwartzentruber had a relative-
ly easy time in the Wingham goal
as he was called upon to make 20
saves. Taylor and Thomas com-
bined to make 45 saves in the
game.
Referee Rob Veccia handed out
18 minors and a misconduct to the
Ironmen and assessed 19 minors, a
cross-checking major and a mis-
conducragainst the fulls.
Ironmen outlast Blackhawks
The Wingham Ironmen over
came a two -goal deficit midway
through the second period, Sunday
afternoon, on their way to a 6-4 de-
cision over the Walkerton Black -
hawks in Western Junior 'C'
Hockey League play at the Lock -
ridge Memorial Arena.
The Ironmen trailed 1-0 after
one period were down by two at
the mid point of the second period,
but rallied to take a 3-2 lead after
40 minutes of play. Wingham out-
scored the Blackhawks 3-2 in the
final period to post the victory.
Jonathan Lane and Jason Becker
tallied two goals apiece for the Ir-
onmen with Scott MacDonald and
Brett Sangster getting singles.
Kyle Wheeler earned a pair of as-
sists, with single helpers being re-
ceived by Sangster, Eric Andrew,
Jason Thompson, Brent Williams,
Tim Schultz, and Brent. Robinson.

Keady to draw
DeVos rink falls
to Palmerston
in curling final
The Aart deVos rink of Wing -
ham lost out in the finals of the In-
ter -County Major' League Curling
playoffs.
The foursome comprised of de-
Vbs, Bill Tolton, Neil Hemingway,
and Tim Tolton had finished the
regular season in eighth place.
Teams in the league were from Ar-
thur, Fergus, Elmira, Harriston, Pal-
merston, and Listowel.
In the first round of playoffs, on
Dec. 10 in Elmira, the deVos four-
Wingham Hawks played Keady
to a 5-5 draw in WOAA intermedi-
ate women's hockey league play on
Saturday.
The Hawks scored three times in
the first period and Keady replied
with three of their own in the sec-
ond, before Wingham again pulled
ahead.
Keady scored two in the third
period to take the lead, only to
have the Hawks come back and
gain the draw.

point game 'A' category with four
wins and +35.
Brian Leachman and Harold Carter

Paul McKee and Lin Hewitt were
fourth with three wins and +64. Al
McKenzie and Rick Bross were fifth
with one win and +103. Don Frook
and Doug Hinsperger were sixth with
one win and +91.
'B' Category
Harold Maize. and George Warner
were first in the single round 40 -
point game 'B' category with four
wins.
Terry Anger and Bob Burr were
second with three wins and +14. Dan
Stacey and Peter DeGroot were third
with two wins and +61. Lorne Kuntz
and Bi11 Anger were fourth with one
win and +72. Bruce Schell .and Ralph
Koopmans were fifth with zero wins
and +117.
some defeated Fergus. Arthur
downed Elmira, Listowel beat a
second entry from Elmira, and Pal-
merston downed Harriston.
In the second round of playoffs,
held Dec. 17 in Palmerston, Wing -
ham defeated Arthur 7-5' in an extra
end. Palmerston defeated Listowel
to set up a Palmerston-Wingham fi-
nal.
Palmerston defeated the deVos
rink 7-3 in the final.
Lancers beaten by Flyers
The Lucknow Lancers were
handed a 4-2 setback by the Dun-
dalk Flyers, Saturday evening in
Dundalk.
The teams were even at one after
the first period, with the Flyers
holding a 3-2 advantage going into
the final period.
Chris Irwin and Dale Preistap
were the goal getters for Lucknow.
Scoring for the Flyers were Pete
Post, Lou Belwood, Bert McDo-
nald, and Scott Sutter.
The Sunday afternoon contest he-
tween the Lions Head Northstars
and Teeswater Falcons was post-
poned to a later date.
Ruron j uniors
defeat Perth
The Huron County juniors de-
feated the Perth County juniors 49-
43 in the annual Huron -Perth girls
basketball all-star basketball game
played last Tuesday evening at
Stratford St. Michaels,
Centre Andrea Hiller of Madill
contributed six points to the Huron
win and forward Michaela John-
ston added three points.
Guard Joanne Huber was unable
to make the game because of
weather conditions.
The Huron County juniors were
coached by Madill's Chris Coul-
thard. The scoring was pretty well ,
spread out for the Huron County
juniors as all but one of the players
playing in the game were able to
score points.
Sisters Pam and Sandra Murphy
were the Madill representatives on
the Huron County senior girls all-
star squad. The Perth County All-
stars won the game.

Carleigh Weiler. Assists were re-
ceived by Campbell, Weiler, Be-
thany Lindsay, and Tabitha Lind-
say.
Scoring for Keady were Rhonda
Fidler with three, Laurie Smith,

Cindy Freiburger was in goal for
Wingham and Melanie Kirkconnell
for Keady.
The Hawks play Saturday against
Lucknow and then compete in the
the Stratford tournament during the
Christrnas break and then compete
in a tourney in Keady.
Brereton, Jason Silverthorn, and
D.J. Selkirk.
David Bartman made 41 Saves in
the Wingham net and Dan Xinta-
velonis stopped 26 Ironmen drives
in the Walkerton goal.
The Ironmen are in Hanover on
Friday for a game against the Bar-
ons and then play host to the
league -leading Mount Forest Patri-
ots on Saturday.
