Swimmers
collect two
gold medals
Huron Hurricanes competed
the first day of a two-day short
course swim meet hosted by the
Etobicoke Swim Club, Dec. 16-
17.
Kevin Schill and Lesley Bur-
ton were the only two Wingham
swimmers taking part, each win-
ning a gold.
Schill won a gold in -the 14 -
year -old boys 100 -metre free-
style in 1:01.67 minutes while
Burton took the gold in the 12 -
year -old girls 100 -metre individ-
ual medley in 1:20.70 minutes.
Schill was second in the 100 -
metre breaststroke in 1:19.64
minutes, second in the 100 -
metre butterfly in 1:15.76 min-
utes, and third in the 100 -metre
individual medley.
Burton was second in the 100 -
metre butterfly in 1:21.64 min-
utes, and second in the 100 -
metre breaststroke in 1:31.66
minutes.
She was also a member of the
Hurricanes 13 -year-old 200 -
metre medley relay team which
placed third.
Lady Mustangs
shut out by
Central Huron
Madill wrestlers earned four
more medals at 'a meet in Cam-
bridge on Friday.
Chris Alexander was the most
successful Madill competitor,.
winning a silver.
Karen Schill, Kristy Ireland,
and Dave Morley all earned
bronze medals.
Sonia Jones, competing in her
first meet, placed fourth.
A total of 18 schools were
competing in the event. The
wrestlers are . in St. Catharines
on Thursday for another compe-
tition.
Madill wrestlers,
pin down four
more medals
Madill Lady Mustangs were
handed a 5-0 setback by the
Central Huron Redwomen, Fri-
day afternoon at Clinton.
Lady Mustangs coach Andy
Jones said the game was even
until the middle of the second
period when Central Huron
scored. They added three quick
goals at the end of the second
period and added another in the
final period.
The coach added that the
Lady Mustangs had two goals
disallowed.
Ericka Burns scored three
times for Central Huron with
single markers added by Mea-
gan Hayter and Jackie Fisher.
Terry Lynn Schell and Mi-
chelle Freiburger shared goal-
tending duties for the Lady Mus-
tangs.

Crusaders
manage tie
with Radars

After being postponed by the
weather last Sunday, the champi-
ons of the 10th annual Wingham
Regional Atom Silver Stick tourna-
ment were determined last Tuesday
evening.
The consolation finals were
played Saturday afternoon at the
Lockridge Memorial Arena in
Wingham.
Mitchell claimed the B-1 cham-
pionship with a 2-1 decision over
Listowel. The B-2 championship
was captured by Stephen Township
as they scored a 4-0 decision over
Chesley.
Mitchell scored the first goal of
the B-1 championship with less
than two minutes to play in the first
period. About 30 seconds later,
Listowel evened the score at 1-1,
with the first goal of the tourna-
ment against Mitchell.
Mitchell netted the winning
marker with 57 seconds remaining
in the game.
Jeff Lepelaars opened the scor-
ing for Mitchell with help from
Craig Kelly.
Chris Quipp tied the score for
Listowel with assists going to Kyle
McKenzie and Jordan Beirnes.
Grant Elligson netted the win-
ning goal with under one minute to
play in the game, with assists going
to Rob Brown and Brian Binning.
Doug Groenestege was in net for
Mitchell and Kyle Beirnes was in
net for Listowel.
No penalties were assessed in
the game by referees Rob Harrison
and Pete Quennell.
Mitchell, with the win, advanced
to the 27th annual international
atom championship to be played in
Sarnia, Jan, 19-21.
In the B-2 championship, Ste-
phen Township and Chesley were
deadlocked in a scoreless draw af-
ter the first period.
Corey McKee's third period
goal lifted the Brussels Crusad-
ers into a 1-1 draw with the
Clinton Radars in WOA.4.Sen-
ior 'A' Hockey League play Sat-
urday evening.
Darrell Johnston had given
the Radars the lead at 1:19 of the
first period.
In a game played Sunday in
Drayton, the Crusaders scored a
7-4 decision over the Comets.
Stephen 'Township scored two
goals in the second period and add-
ed two more unanswered goals in
the final period to claim the 4-0 de-
cision.
Scott Davies scored what proved
to be the winning marker with help
from Colin Sauder and Ryan Knee.
Jesse Schroeder gave Stephen
Township a two -goal advantage
with help from Jesse McCann and
Mark Laye.
Roman Wilson gave Stephen
Township a 3-0 lead in the third pe-
riod with Sauder and Davies earn-
ing assists. Davies netted the final
goal into the empty net in the final
minute of the game.
Dave Michielson recorded the
shut out in the Stephen Township
net.
A single penalty was called in
the game by the two referees.
With the win, Stephen Township
advanced to the sixth annual 'C' fi-
nals to be played in Forest, Jan. 12-
14.
Consolation finals
Seaforth went up against Kincar-
dine in the B-1 consolation final
and Mildmay played Brussel in
the B-2 consolation final at the
Lockridge Memorial Arena on Sat-
urday afternoon..
Kincardine held a 3-0 advantage
after two periods of play and hung
on for 5-3 win in the B-1 consola-
tion final. In the B-2 consolation 'fi-
nal, Brussels outlasted Mildmay by
scoring a 9-7 victory.
Kincardine took a 1-0 lead in the
first period and added two more in
the second period. Seaforth finally
found the net in the third period,
got to within one on two occasions
before Kincardine was able to pull
out the win.
i Andrew Burrows had two goals
and an assist for Kincardine with
Mitch Walden earning a goal and
an assist. Fraser Jones and Lee
Wessels contributed single mark-
ers.
Hockey Mustangs
Josh Holland fired a pair of
markers for Seaforth with Wade
Broome adding a single.
In the B-2 consolation final,
Brussels and. Mildmay were even at
two after the first period of play
with Brussels taking, a 6-4 advan-
tage into the final period. Mildmay
managed to get back to within one,
but Brussels tallied again to restore
the two -goal margin of victory.
Nolan Krotz and Lee Dilworth
had two goals and four assists each
for Brussels with Kyle Stephenson
chipping in with two goals and an a
pair of assists. Joel Hemingway,
Tyler Campbell, and Mark Hunter
had one goal apiece.
Simon Beitz and Kevin Gutcher
had two goals apiece for Mildmay
with single markers added by Kyle
Potts, Devin Beitz, and Stewart
McIntosh.
score 5-4 decision
over Central Huron
The Madill hockey Mustangs
improved their Huron -Perth High
School Hockey League record to
1-0-2, Friday afternoon, by scor-
ing a 5-4 decision over the Central
Huron .
The teams were deadlocked at
1-1 after the first period, and Cen-
tral Huron held a 3-1 lead with
about five minutes to go in the
middle stanza. Madill tallied three
times in the final five minutes to
take a 4-3 advantage into the third
period.
The Mustangs took a 5-3 lead
early in the third period, and play
was stopped as a Central Huron
player was attended to. An ambu-
lance was summed, and the player
was transported to the Wingham
and District Hospital.
The Redmen got back to within
one, but were unable to net the
equalizer.
Jeff Porter tallied the first Ma-
dill goal with help from Josh John-
ston and Neil Mowbray:
Craig Moffat tallied the second
Madill marker, a shorthanded ef-
fort, with help from Johnston and
Joel Pegg.
Chad Moffatt scored to make it
a 3-3 game, with the assists going
to David Greig and Ian Smith.
Chad Moffat put the Mustangs
in front with help from Troy. Dos -
man and Greig.
David McDonald gave Madill a
6-3 lead with Ean Moffat earning
the assist.
Keith Durand scored two goals
for Central Huron with Jon Miller.

The Mustangs were in Exeter
yesterday for a game against the
South Huron Panthers, and then
travel to Waterloo for the annual
Waterloo County Christmas Invi-
tational tournament, Dec. 21-23.
