Family math at Sacred Heart
As parents, teachers, aunts, un-
cles, grandparents or friends, most
of us know that if we take a child to
the library once a week and read
aloud to her or him a lot, it pro-
vides a good start toward enjoy-
ment of reading and therefore to-
ward reading well.
Twenty-three families participat-
ed in the Family Math course
which ran for four evenings during
November at Sacred Heart School
in Wingham. Parents and children
of Grades 1, 2 and 3 had the oppor-
tunity to develop skills using
"hands-on" material in a positive
and "fun" setting.
But what do we know about
helping children enjoy mathemat-
ics? Is it learning the times tables?
Completing pages of long division
problems? Or is there a mathemat-
ics library somewhere that has mo-
tivated mathematical book to be
read?
What do you remember of your
own mathematics education? Was
it a pleasure or a pain? What topics
did you study? Was it all addition,
subtraction, multiplication, division
and parents? How do you feel now
when your children ask you for
help with math homework?
The Family Math course was
aimed at helping all kinds of people
love mathematics — parents, chil-
dren, teachers, neighbors — every-
body. Mathematics is more than
arithmetic it is beautiful and fas-
