United Church Women meet
December 4 at Sunday School
GORRIE--The Christmas meeting
of the United Church Women was
held Dec. 4 in the Sunday School
room with 19 members present.
The room was decorated in hunter
green, white lace and the glow of
several coal -oil lamps.
Debbie ''acques and Edna Fairies
presented -the worship program.
Mrs. Jacques gave a warm wel-
come to all and the call to worship.
The opening carol was "0 Come,
All Ye Faithful". Mrs. Jacques and
Mrs. Fairies had several readings,
including "Are You Afraid of the
Dark?", "Come, Lord Jesus" and
some depicting Jesus the King,
who is many different kinds of
kings to all who believe.
The Christmas scripture texts
were taken from Luke 2:1-20 and
Matthew 2:1-12. Marie Strong
'played the piano as old-time favor-
ites were sung throughout the wor-
ship.
The offering was received by
Margaret Taylor and Velma Mann
and dedicated by Mrs. Fairies. Mrs.
Jacques closed the worship with
prayer and "Joy To The World"
was sung. Members were left with
the thought that Jesus' journey be-
gan in the manger and He is the
King of compassion and love.
Wendy Stewart thanked the lead-
ers for their program and read a
Christmas program entitled
"Love". Marion Schefter read the
November minutes and the slate of
officers for 1996. Shirley Doig pre-
sented the financial report of a very
successful year.
Donations were made to Camp
Menesetung and Friendship House
for Women and Children at Gode-
rich. A cheque will be presented to
the board of stewards from UCW
and Rev. Jeff Hawkins reported the
Fund Raisers also will present a
cheque. Members were reminded
of Christmas visits to shut-ins.
Events for the coming year were
announced and include: Feb. 11,
Valentine supper; May 14, 15 and
16, bale; June 12, garden party;
Oct. 27, Halloween supper and
Nov. 30, Christmas bazaar.
The slate of officers for the com-
ing year is as follows: president,
Wendy Stewart; assistant president,
Donna Nay; presbyterial represen-
tative, Eleanore Grainger; secre-
tary, Mrs. Schefter; treasurer, Mrs.
Doig; advertising secretary, Marie
Strong; representative to the manse
committee, Mrs. Strong;
Catering committee, Mrs.
Jacques, Catharine Stewart, Marga-
ret Greig, Jean Price and Darlene
Payne; funeral lunch, Dorothy
Elschner and Mrs. Nay; friendship
and cheer, Mrs. Fairies, Ilene Has -
tie; program committee, Mrs.
Fairies, Kathy Edgar; pianist, Mrs.
Strong; decorating committee,
Jackie Gowdy, Margaret Brewer
and auditors, Mrs. Jacques and
Carol Mann.
Grace was sung and a delicious
lunch served and enjoyed.
Bluevale seniors enjoy dinner
BLUEVALE--The Bluevale Senior
Citizens had their Christmas dinner
at the Bluevale United Church, ca-
tered to by the young ladies of the
Church. A delicious meal was en-
joyed by 42 members and one
guest. The president, Joe Walker,
thanked the ladies on behalf of the
club.
At this time, they all went, to the
Bluevale Hall where Mrs. Mel
Craig introduced the guest speaker,
Marguerite Thomas, a public health
nurse. She spoke on being grouchy
and living among people who are
grouchy. She gave some helpful'
hints on ways to get out of a bad
mood, saying it is unhealthy and
people lose out on a lot of good
times and relationships over the
course of their lives.

BLUEVALE--The United Church
Women met at the Bluevale Kount-
ry Kitchen for their dinner prior to
• the Christmas meeting on Dec. 6.
Afteg the dinner, members returned
to the church.

opened the meeting,' followed by
the minutes given by Secretary
Shirley Nicholson. Audrey Edgar
gave the treasurer's report.
Binevale News
The "white -gift service" was
held at Bluevale Presbyterian
Church last Sunday, followed by a
potluck luncheon. Following the
luncheon, the Sunday School stu-
dents presented their Christmas
concert.
The MacLennan, Thompson and
Warwick families held their Christ-
mas dinner recently at the Bluevale
Community Hall.
Dustin Golley of Oliphant spent
the weekend recently with his
grandparents, Norma and Glenn
Colley.
Sunday School students partici-
pated in the "white -gift service" at
Bluevale United Church.
Birthday greetings from the com-
munity go to Stanley Moffatt as he
celebrates a "special birthday" this
week.
LEGION SHOOT
Fifteen tables of shoot were in
play at the Wingham Legion Hall
last Monday night.
Louise Bosman was the high
lady and Marie Merkley, second
high. Clarence Ohm was high man
and Marie Chittick (playing on the
white card) was second high.
Edythe Coultes and Flo Ohm
tied for the most shoots for the la-
dies with Mrs. Coultes being the
eventual winner. Keith Toye had
the most shoots for the men.
Draw prizes were awarded to
Helen Martin, John King, Merle
McFarlane and Alex Robertson.
The next Legion card party, a
shoot, will be held on Monday, Jan.
8.
BELGRAVE EUCHRE
There were 11 tables of euchre in
play at the Women's Institute Hall
last Wednesday, Dec. 6.
Agnes Bieman was the high lady
and Aileen Leddy, second high.
Marie Merkley had the most lone
hands and Florence Schefter was
low lady.
Jim Coultes was the high man
and George Inglis, second high.
Ross Taylor had the most lone
hands and Mel Jacklin was low
man.

Bonnie Johnston led in worship
with everyone singing "While
Shepherds Watched Their Flocks
by Night" with Mary Lou Johnston
at the piano. Bonnie Johnston read
the scripture from Luke 2: 8-20.

let's put Christ into Christmas. As
we think about our Christmas gifts,
she said, let's not lose sight of what
Christmas means. She closed with a
prayer and all sang "Silent Night".
Bessie Johnston had the enter-
tainment with a skit entitled
"Grandma Got Ran Over 13y a
Reindeer". This was performed by
Unit 4 and Rev. Randy Banks and
was really enjoyed by all. Mrs.
Johnston then gave a reading on
"The First Day of Harvest".
A few more Christmas carols
were sung. The president closed the
meeting with the UCW Benedic-
tion.
Stanley Black is a patient in
Wingham and District Hospital.
Friends, relatives and neighbors
wish Stanley a speedy recovery.
Congratulations go to Ken Hop-
per, who was selected Kinsman of
the Year recently for the work he
has done for the Belgrave club over
the past year. Ken accepted his
plaque from President Harry Wil-
son. Past President Paul Moffatt
also was presented a plaque by the
current president.
Ida Evans and Mrs. E. Evans of
Brus;als visited with Harold and
Edith Vincent last Thursday after-
noon.
Don and Carol Vincent of Petit-
codiac, New Brunswick, spent the
weekend with their parents recent-
ly, George and Greta Webster of
Wingham and Harold and Edith
Vincent. Belgrave.
Harold and Edith Vincent had a
surprise visit last Sunday afternoon
from two cousins, Thillman and
Mike Wallace of Chugiak, Alaska.
Clarence Stokes of Wingham ac-
companied Mildred and Clarence
Yuill and Olive Bolt of Belgrave to
Listowel on Saturday, Dec. 2, to
join in the golden wedding anniver-
sary celebration of their cousins,
John and Agnes Lane.
"Mabel's Moms" met at the
home of Mabel Wheeler at the reg-
ular time on Wednesday, Dec. 6.
Attending were: Andrea Stevenson,
Mathew and Tyler; Kim Higgins
and Laura; Linda Hess and An-
drew; Bet Higgins, Meagan, Melis-
sa and Kate; lila Procter and Ben;
Sherri Sippel, Christa, Scott and
Daniel; Claren Yuill; Sandra
Dorsch and Melinda and Rev. Mary
Jane Hobden. The topic discussed
was coping with stealing.

Elizabeth McKercher thanked
Mit. Thomas and presented her
with a small gift in appreciation.
A few games of cards were en-
joyed with the following winners:
high man, Wes Paulin; high lady,
Vera Moffatt; low man, Ross Tur-
vey; low lady, Winnie Boyd and
door prizes, Hugh and Mary Camp-
bell.
Everyone enjoyed some punch,
cheese and crackers and raw fruit.
A gift exchange also took place.
The next seniors' open card par-
ty is Jan. 8, the next Bluevale dance
is Jan. 12 and the next seniors'
meeting is Jan. 29, 1996.

Women
WHITECHURCH--The Decem-
ber meeting of the United Church
Women was held on Wednesday,
Dec. 6, at 1:30 p.m. Dessert was
served prior to the meeting by the
hostess, Agnes Farrier.
Mrs. Farrier opened the meeting
by reading "Treasures of Christ-
mas". Other readers included Mar-
garet Sleightholm, Janet Cook and
Mildred McClenaghan, who read a
poem entitled "The Cobbler".
Mrs. Cook read a story entitled.
"Christmas Pageant in the Church".
Mrs. Farrier gave a piano solo,
"Star of the East" and Hazel Laid-
law led in prayer.
Seven members answered the
roll call by naming their reason for
joy at Christmas. The meeting
closed with the singing of "We
Wish You a Merry Christmas".
Dolores Kaufman returned home
last Sunday after spending three
months with her daughter and son-
in-law, Ian and Sherry Defner of
Kangaroo Island, south of Austra-
lia. It is summertime there, she re-
ports and the temperature ranges
from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius.
Rev. Jeff Hawkins received into
the Gorrie United Church by bap-
tism last Sunday morning, Zachary
Keith, infant son of Mr. and Mrs.
Norman Watson.
Elva Jacques has returned home
after spending a week with her
daughter at Kitchener, following
the death of her son-in-law, Lew
Taylor. The sympathy of the com-
munity is extended to Nancy and
her family in their recent loss.
