Weather farces postponement
of Atom tournament finals

For the first time in the 10 -year
history of the Wingham Regional
Silver Stick hockey tournaments,
the consolation and championship
finals were postponed due to the
weather.
The finalists have been deter-
mined for both consolation and
championship finals, but because
of the heavy snowfall and strong
winds on Sunday, thegames were
not played.
Tournament organizers were
aware of the situation on Saturday
as some teams had problems get-
ting to the Lockridge Memorial
Arena or the Belmore Arena.
The championship finals were
played last night with the consola-
tion finals being played"Saturday.
Mitchell took on Listowel in the
0-1 championship at 6:30 p.m. and
Stephen Township went up against
Chesley at 7:45 p.m.
Seaforth and Kincardine will
meet in the B-1 consolation final,
and Mildmay will play Brussels in
the B-2 consolation final.
Mitchell finished first in the 'A'
category and went against Seaforth,
runner-up in the 'B' category in a
semi-final game Saturday. The oth-

er B-1 semi-final had 'B' category
winner Listowel go against 'A' cat-
egory runner-up Kincardine.
Mitchell scored in the first and
second periods as they downed
Seaforth 2-0. Grant Elleson and
Craig Kelly were the goal getters
for Mitchell. Doug Groenestege re-
corded the shut out.
Listowel tallied three unan-
swered goals in the third period to
post a 4-1 decision over Kincar-
dine. The teams were even at 0-0
after the first period and tied at one
after two periods.
Jordan Beirnes had two goals
and an assist for Listowel with sin-
gle markers netted by Blake Ber-
felz and Mike Binning.
Mitch Walden replied for Kin-
cardine.
Stephen Township was first in
'C' category and went up against
'D' category runner-up Mildmay in
a B-2 division semi-final, with 'D'
category winner Brussels going
against 'C' category runner-up
Chesley.
Stephen Township received a
five -goal effort from Colin Sander
as they downed Mildmay 12-4.
Jesse Schroeder added four goals
with single markers added by Jesse
McCann, Scott Davies, and Roman
Wilson.
Kyle Potts tallied twice for Mild-
may with Kevin Gutcher and Devin
Beitz adding singles.
Stephen Township led 4-2 after
the first period and were ahead 5-2
going into the final period.
Jordan Lang scored three times
as Chesley surprised Brussels 4-1.
Matt Cooper added a single marker.
Darrell McClure tallied the lone
Brussels Coal.
The teams were even at one after
the first period, with Chesley hold-
ing a 2-1 lead after two periods.

ollmer wins novice men's silver
Jamie Vollmer, 16 -year-old son
of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Vollmer of
Turnberry Township, won the sil-
ver medal in the Novice men's
competition at the Central Canadi-
an Figure Skating Championships
held last weekend at Winnipeg.
Vollmer, who started his figure
skating career at Belmore, but now
skates out of St. Mary's, was fifth
in the short program. However, a
strong performance in the long pro-
gram -- he finished first -- earned
him the silver medal.
Harry Vollmer spoke to his son
last Saturday from Winnipeg. He
reports Jamie was pleased with his
performance and happy to note he
was able to land a double axle and
a triple slachow.

Harry Vollmer says his son is
right where he wants to be at this
point in his figure skating career
and has his eye on eventually com-
peting in the Winter Olympics. The
proud father also notes that Jamie is
doing well at school at St. Mary's
where he lives and trains.
