Mitchell
The Wingham Barry's Esso
Novice As scored an impressive
victory on Saturday, knocking
off Mitchell 6-3.
Wingham jumped out to an
early lead and then controlled
much of the rest of the game
with a strong two-way effort.
Joel Riley • paced the offence
with four goals while Brad Bur-
ton and Jason Thompson added
singles. Burton also set up two
goals with his tenacious fore -
checking.
Goalie Nick- Henderson made
several key saves against the
powerful squad from Mitchell.
Winger Adam MacDonald was
one of several Wingham for-
wards who turned in an excel-

strong backchecking.
Wingham, which remains un-
beaten in regular season, heads
to Clinton on Saturday for a 2
p.m. contest.

LUCKNOW - Organizers of the
NHL Oldtimers hockey game at
the Lucknow District Sports Corn-
plex Sunday afternoon are really
happy with the turnout.
The Lucknow Lancers of the
WOAA Senior 'B' Hockey League
played the NHL Oldtimers in the
charity hockey game, in front of a
packed house of 1,050.
The game was organized by the
Lucknow Kinsmen Club, with all
the proceeds from the game going
to the Lucknow Arena Building
Fund.
Randy Alton of the Kinsmen
Club said, following the game, that
between $5,000 and $6,000 was
raised. However, that did not in-
clude the Blueline Club or souvenir
program sales.
He noted that the Kinsmen Club
did not pay for the building of the
area, but are trying to pay it off.
The NHL Oldtimers and the
Lancers were even at two after the
first period and tied at 5-5 after two
periods. Each team added • four
-more goals in the third period for a
final score of 9-9.
While the spectators enjoyed the
passing and stickhandling display
put on by the likes of Andy Bath-
gate, Jack Valiquette, Keith
McCreary, Dean Prentice, Mike
Pelyk, Bob Lorimer, John Miszuk,
Dick Redmond and others, it was
local hockey legend Paul Hender-
son wanted to see.
But, Henderson was late in arriv-
ing,
after being involved in a two -
vehicle accident in Wingham.
Wingham OPP reported that at 1
p.m. on Sunday, Henderson andhis
family were westbound on Hwy: 86
in a Buick Park Avenue en route to
the charity hockey game.
As he went through the intersec-
tion of Hwy. 86 and 4, he was hit
by a southbound Astro van driven
by Sherry Shiell of RR 5 Wingham.
All persons were taken to Wing -
ham and District Hospital with mi-
nor injuries, treated and released.
Paying off the ref•••The NHL Oldtimers did not like the location of the faceoff, so
Oldtimer Wayne Carleton offered referee Ron Hoggarth some money to move the faceoff. After
four "bribes" the faceoff was down in the Lancers zone. The NHL Oldtimers and the
skated to a 9-9 draw in the fund-raising game for the Lucknow Arena Building Fund.
Both vehicles were demolished, ac-
cording tp police.
OPP•reported that Shiell'has been
charged with disobeying a red light.
Henderson arrived in time to play
in the third period, setting upa
couple of goals. He even scored a
goal for the Lanccrs, as the puck
bounced off his stick and in behind
goalie Peter McDuffe.
While the Oldtimers were serious
about playing hockey, they also had
a little fun. Valiquette started the
game with a 'Hanson Brothers' wig
and glasses on.
Referee Ron Hoggarth ques-
tioned Valiquette on the opening

pley. Don Schiestel was top
marksman for Wingham as he

close. Kevin Hopf and Kent Read -

hay in the Wingham net.
In their second game, Scaforth
eliminated the Wingham squad,
winning the semi-final match 5-1.
Zack O'Krafka notched the lone

the game, it was a much improved
