Novices lose in tourney final
For the second consecutive
year, the Wingham Barry's Esso
Novices lost in the championship
of the Durham tournament.
Wingham opened the tourney
with a 3-0 decision over Orange-
ville. Adam MacDonald opened
the scoring, banging in a loose
puck in •the first period. Jason
Thompson added a goal in the sec-
ond and Joel Riley sealed the win
with a goal late in the third.
Nick Henderson earned the shut
out.
In the Saturday night semi-final
game, Wingham faced the host
team from Durham. Last season,
Durham had eliminated Wingham
from the OMHA playoffs, so there
was added interest in this game.

strong two-way effort in the 4-1
win, and was named MVP of the
Junior Mustangs win Huron title
By JIM BROWN
The Advance -Times
The Madill junior Mustangs are
the Huron County junior girls bas-
ketball champions for 1995-96.
The junior Mustangs won the
school's first-ever junior girls
crown last Wednesday afternoon
by downing the Seaforth Golden
Bears 35-24. .
Despite struggling for the first
three quarters, coach Chris Coul-
thard said it was the team's work
ethic that came through and ena-
bled Madill to pull out the win.
He told the players following
the contest that Seaforth was able
to take centre Andrea Hiller out of
the game offensively. However,
she was still in the game defen-
sively, and she was still able to
control the defensive boards.
However, Michaela Johnston
and Joanne Huber came through
offensively. Coulthard said when
Huber was able to split the Sea -
forth defenders and drive down
the middle for a basket, the for-
tunes of the junior Mustangs be-
gan to change.
After going through the regular
season with a perfect 8-0 record,
the junior Mustangs defeated
.South Huron Panthers in the semi-
final to reach the final. Seaforth
got past Goderich Vikings in their
semi-final match -up.
However, in the county champi-
onship, the junior Mustangs did
not play like an undefeated team.
They were struggling at the start
of the game, and were unable to
find the basket.
After 2 1/2 minutes of the first
half, the Golden Bears held a 6-0
lead. However, by the end of the
first eight minutes of play, the
Mustangs held a 10-8 advantage.
The Golden Bears took over the
play in the second quarter as they
held a 16-13 lead at halftime.
the juniors Mustangs were still
struggling in the third quarter, as
Seaforth held a five -point lead at
one time. By the end of three-
quartes of play, the Golden Bears
held a slim 22-21 lead.
The fourth quarter belonged to
the Mustangs as they hit for 14
points, half of them by Hiller, to
pull out the victory.
Coach Coulthard said the team
was trouble when he called a time •
out at the start of the fourth quar-
ter. He told them to play more ag-
gressively, at both ends of the
court, and to take chances offen-
sively. The move worked as the
Madill players were able to get
more chances at the basket.
Hiller finished the game with 12
points. Huber hooped 11 points
and Johnston scored eight points
in a winning effort.
Amy Hamon and Kara Murray
had eight points apiece for the
Golden Bears.
game.
Tom Pettigrew and Evan Zinn
played a strong game on defence
as Wingham had to kill off a five-
minute penalty.
The win put Wingham into the
the final, but it was a costly victo-
ry as captain Bradley Burton was
ejected and would miss the cham-
pionship game.
Wingham got off on the right
foot in the final game as Riley
took the puck from the opening
face off, drove behind the net and
scored on a wrap around.
But the depth and balance of the
Hunstville team started to show as
the game dragged on and Wing -
ham lost 4-1, the team's first set-
back of the season.
Wingham travels to Goderich
on Saturday.

Fall to Warriors in HuronsPerth final
The 10 -game winning streak of
the Madill junior Mustangs in Hu-
ron County High School Basket-
ball League play came to an end
on Friday at the Huron -Perth
championships.
The junior Mustangs missed at
least six lay-ups in the contest as
they fell 23-17 to the Stratford St.
• Michaels Warriors. The game was
played at the Madill gymnasium.
Although the Mustangs were de-
feated by the Warriors, Madill still
advances to the WOSSA champi-
onship, which will be played Fri-
day and Saturday at Stratford
Northwestern.
Madill coach Chris Coulthard
said the Huron -Perth champion-
ship was a game of quickness, and
St.Michaels was quicker then the
Mustangs.
"They were able to use their
quickness to their advantage," he
said. "And, we didn't handle the
pressure very well."
The coach said that when a team
doesn't get many chances, they
should make' good on all their op-
portunities. Coulthard said the ball
wasn't going in for the Mustangs.
The coach said that even though
Si Mike's was a quicker team, no
one player dominated during the
game.
The Warriors opened the game
defensively with a full -court press,
•
which the Mustangs had not seen
too much during the season. St.
Mike's was able to tie up the Mus-
tangs in their owt, zone, causing
turn overs and bad passes.
Offensively, the Warriors used
solid ball control by passing the
ball around the key in the Madill
zone;
St. Mike's used their quickness
to take a 9-5 lead after the first
quarter. Madill rebounded to take
a short-lived 10-9 lead in the sec-
ond quarter, but trailed 13-10 at
halftime.
Both teams scored four points
each in the third quarter with St.
Mike's pulling away in the final
period to claim the 23-17 win.
Madill's Jacquelyn Elston fouled
out with 48 seconds left to play in
the game.
Kathyrn Alton had six points for
the Mustangs with Andrea HiHer
adding five points. Joanne Huber
and Michaela Johnston hooped
three points apiece.
Crusaders win twice
Brussels Crusaders posted a pair
of victories ih WOAA Senior 'A'
Hockey League play on the week-
end.
Tim Fritz collected a goal and
three assists Saturday evening as
the Crusaders scored a 4-1 deci-
sion over the Drayton Comets at
the Brussels -Morris -Grey Com-
munity Centre.
The teams were deadlocked in a
scoreless draw after 20 minutes of
play, with the Crusaders taking a
2-0 lead into the third period.
Getting single goals for Brus-
sels were Ted Sills, Jeff Earl and
Corey McKee.
Mike Birmingham was the lone
goal getter for Drayton.
The game was played in one
hour and 50 minutes.
Playing in Brussels on Friday,
the Crusaders held a 2-1 lead after
the first period and were in front
3-1 after two periods. The Redmen
scored two in the third period to
send the game into overtime.
Scott Bridge's shorthanded goal
with three minutes left in regula-
tion time tied the score at 3-3.
Brent Van Den Akker netted the
winning marker at 1:37 of the
overtime period.
Also scoring for the Crusaders
were Greg Mulvey, Ron Strome,
And Tim Fritz.
