The Wingham Advance Times, 1995-11-22, Page 5i MEM NMI NO OR 22,1995 Write to stop senseless destruction of earth Dear Editor: We all believed that the cold war was over and that the world was en- tering a new era of sanity, peace and good will. Russia and the USA ceased manufacturing nuclear bombs and deep-freeze the nuclear weapons which were already stock- piled. Now, what are we witnessing? We observe France going through the obscene act of detonating nucle- ar bombs in the South Pacific. Can you really imagine the billions of dollars of destruction in amarine life and the nuclear contamination of -the vast ocean itself? And what for? Millions of dollars are being spent by all governments to protect and improve the environ- ment...rightly so! What action have the world pow- ers, including our own country of Canada, taken to have this sense- less, illegal, wanton destruction cease immediately? Australia, New Zealand and Japan have entered toothless protests. The great powers have buried their heads in the sands of fearful apathy. The seas of the South Pacific be- long to everyone on earth, not just to one country and they are part and parcel of the world environ- ment. May everyone with concern over this wanton destruction write to Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Pre- mier Mike Harris, Ministers of the Environment, our MPs and MPPs, urging positive immediate action to stop this pulverization of our world environment. So when Parti Quebecois leader Jacques Parizeau announced his resignation less than 24 hours after Quebec rejected sovereignty, life became a little sweeter. What's troubling, though, is the reason behind his resignation and the reasons why Bloc Quebecois leader Lucien Bouchard isn't also stepping down. Following the referendum loss, Parizeau pointed the finger of blame at money and the ethnic vote for killing the province's drive for independence. That remark was the last straw for many Que- becers who would have preferred that Parizeau had couched his language in a more politically -correct manner. Now, any politician knows the significance of demographics. If you plan to win an election or a referendum, you need to examine various groups within the voting population and develop strategies to win over each of them. The separetistes were unable to infiltrate Quebec's so-called allophones — the community within Quebec that claims neither French nor English as its mother tongue. This group voted to stay in Canada, which is, presumably, the country they chose to emigrate to. Come voting day, Parizeau knew where he would and wouldn't receive support. And when the final count was in, he simply stated it was too bad the ethnic voters weren't convinced to vote for inde- pendence. The uproar was predictable. Parizeau was merely stating a fact, although he could have phrased it better. Remember though, he could have put it in a much more sinister way too. Parizeau didn't cuss at the maudit ethniques or the DPs for voting the way they did. As things stand, most folks read something into his words that may not have been there. Parizeau hasn't apologized for the comment, which he could have defended successfully. What's truly frightening is why Bloc Quebecois leader Bouchard — now packing for a 40 -day and 40 -night walk through the desert to wrestle with his own separatist angst — wasn't drummed out for suggesting Quebecers are a white race that simply isn't having enough babies. Why did that uproar die? Momentum saved Bou • - chard's skin. Following the "white race" comment, Quebec Liberal leader Daniel Johnson was properly outraged but let the issue die. Instead of painting a clear picture of what life might be like living under the power of a racist, he asked Prime Minister Jean Chretien to make a constitutional offer to Quebec. Chretien refused, saying the debate in progress was about Quebec's referendum rather than constitutional amendments. This took considerable heat off Bou- chard, who was able to go on the attack again, leaving the race is- sue behind. While Parizeau's remarks could be successfully defended, there is, no other context in which Bouchard's comment could be taken. It was served up as racism and taken as racism. So what. gives? These turn -of -events make it perfectly .clear — if it weren't al- ready — the debate, over Quebec's future is won and lost on emo- tion, not fact. And what emotions do separatists build on to win their case? National pride. This is where the racism comes in. Dur- ing the referendum campaign, a Bloc Quebecois member of Parlia- ment scolded a reporter about a question asked during a press con- ference. You don't understand the Quebecois experience, the MP told the reporter. Then, she quickly tore a strip off the scribe for not speaking French with a Quebec accent. It has become painfullyob- vious the BQ and PQ are preparing a nation for French-speaking Quebecers only. .. • Back to Parizeau. While his speech wasn't racist, the man showed a glimpse of the darker nature of Quebec nationalism. Pari- zeau linked politics and ethnicity,— a most distasteful practice. His resignation gives us a more thorough understanding of Parizeau's character. When he campaigned against Johnson for the premier's seat ,last year, he ran on a platform of good government. Jobs and economic development were important elements in the PQ cam- paign. Only reluctantly and briefly did Parizeau touch on the sove- reignty issue. He told Quebec voters a referendum would be held within a year of a PQ victory. But .it is understood Quebecers voted for better government, not separation. Now that he's quit in a huff, it's reasonable to suggerst Parizeau's campaign promises were lies and Quebecers, like every other Canadian, are simply. being jerked around by politicians eve- ry time the sovereignty issue comes up. Of course, he just had to. do it on the same day as I organized my own Hundred Guy March, an event designed to bring guys to- gether to learn, share and grow. I thought I was doing everything right but I'm the first to admit, the event was a failure --no one showed. Maybe I should have called it the Million Guy March instead of just a hundred. Or maybe I should have held it on a non -bowling night, I don't know. But then I was thinking, maybe the problem is deeper. Maybe nobody showed up because they just weren't sure if they qualify as a guy or not. Fortunately I've prepared a lit- tle quiz and the results should tell you if you re a real guy or simply a male.
