ER staffing
ew officers at Salvation Army reaching
critical stage
By MARGARET STAPLETON
The Advance -Times
Wingham is the new home for
Salvation Army lieutenants, Marc
and Cairn Pittock, who arrived ear-
lier this fall from Woodstock.
Even though- the young couple
are natives of Woodstock, they nev-
er had visited Wingham until late
this summer. After spending a
month getting acquainted, both say
they are settling into their new role
and enjoying meeting townsfolk.
The Pittocks replace Capt. Roy
Scott and Mrs. Capt. Margaret
Scott, now stationed at Brockville.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Pittock say
they are not rushing into making
any major changes in the way the
local Salvation Army operates until
they learn more about the wants
and needs of the community. The
Salvation Army will continue to
Operate. its thrift store -food bank
and will continue its annual Christ-
mas drive for food, toys and cloth-
ing for needy families.
It takes time to build a relation-
ship within the community, notes
Mr. Pittock, who adds that he and
his wife are open to suggestions on
how the Salvation Army, can better
perform its role as a family service
ministry.
A registered nurse by training,
Cairn Pittock became involved with
the Salvation Army when she start-
ed dating Marc, whose•family has a
long tradition in the corps. Mr. Pit -
tock also has worked extensively
with Youth For Christ and hopes to
put some of that training to good
use here in town.
The Pittocks have been posted in
several parts of Canada, including
Edmonton and most recently, they
spent the summer at Bayfield. They
say they are happy to be back in a
small town where people make eye
contact and exchange a friendly
word.

trustees
GODERICH - County councillors
did not support a request from the
trustees of the Huron County Board
of Education to ask the province for
a change in the way education is
funded. Instead, council voted to
reiterate its position that there -
should be a zero per cent increase
in education taxes following the
same policy that the county has.
The trustees had explained, in a
letter to council, that Huron is in
year two of a phased -in increase in
property assessment values and
that, despite cost cutting, taxes will
have to go up another five per cent
on top of the 5-6 per cent incurred
last year. Similar increases will go
on for three more years, trustees
warned.

Salvation Army Officers...Lieutenants
Cairn and Marc Pittock recently arrived in Wingham.
In these times of cutbacks, the
Salvation Army can fulfill a need,
but only if there is consultation arid
cooperation among local Churches
and service clubs. Mr. Pittock says
he believes a "community mindset"
needs to he built so that groups can
work together for the betterment of
all.
"We all have a part to play," he
says. "We just want to play the part
God has chosen for us...We still
must proclaim God's truths,as rele-
vant."

of emergency on-call medical staff-
ing.
Dr, Shubat said local doctors cur-
rently provide on-call weekend ser-
vices in the hospital emergency de-
partment. However, due to the long
hours required, at least one doctor
has gone on notice as saying that
the situation is unsafe, said Dr.
Shubat. Doctors currently take all
or part off weekend call and no
longer are supplemented by "moon-
lighting" medical residents.
In a 72 -hour weekend call peri-
od, Dr. Shebat said a doctor could
effectively spend much of his or
her time at the hospital and even be
up three nights in a row.
"The emergency may not be
open in the future if we don't get
some (more) doctors," commented
Dr. Shubat:
Chairman Noreen Gnay said the
hospital board is well aware of the
staffing problems in emergency and
very sympathetic to the plight of lo-
cal doctors. Mary Lou Cameron
agreed that the situation has
reached a crucial stage.
Bob Pike asked Dr. Shubat more
than once what the board can do to
remedy the situation. "The board
does not set up the (weekend call)
schedule."
"I just want to make you (the
board) aware of the situation and
let you know that two doctors on
staff are uncomfortable with it," re-
plied Dr. Shubat.
Hospital Executive Director
Lloyd Koch said that the situation
is "less than the best arrangement,"
but added that local doctors have
agreed to "soldier on".
"The solutions lie in the (recom-
mendations of) the Scott Report,"
on emergency room staffing, com-
mented Koch, adding that the board
still is actively trying to recruit phy-
sicans to the area possibly by open-
ing and equipping a medical clinic.
A report on the 'status of the
medical clinic will be presented at
the December meeting of the hospi-
tal board.
