Loose or cor- roded connections can diminish the battery's starting power markedly. If your connections are sound, wipe them and the terminals with a mixture of baking soda and water, which cleans 'and neutralizes the acidic corrosion. If they are un- sound, replace the battery cable. Once re -installed, dab the con- nectors with a protective coating of grease to further prevent corrosion. When battery replacement is nec- essary, the best solution is a new maintenance -free battery. High technology batteries are powerful enough for quick starts even in ex- tremely cold weather. This type of batteryis 'available at major re- tailers nationwide. No matter what kind of vehicle you drive, make sure you can de- pend on your battery when the tem- perature drops. Don't be left out in the cold. (NU)—Cold weather delivers a wicked one-two punch to your bat- tery. Freezing temperatures reduce a battery's engine -cranking power. And cold weather thickens oil, which makes the engine even hard- er to start. In fact, it takes five times more battery power to start an engine at minus 10 degrees Fah- renheit than it does at plus 70. Battery replacement may be nec- essary for many motorists this year. So before Old Man Winter leaves you stranded, check your vehicle battery. Some of the danger signs of bat- tery failure include headlights dim- ming when accessories are in use and more difficult crank starts on cold days. Also, even if your battery tests out well, you should consider re- placing it if it is near the end of its warranty period. The average orig- inal equipment battery is guar- anteed for three years ---and that's usually how long it lasts. This noise, most prev- alent in cold weather, usually comes from a wom bearing in the fan motor. It's an indication of pending failure. This is just one many parts we take for granted until, usually too late, we discover they were calling for attention. That's when the cold ride to work becomes misery. Most of this discomfort. and in- convenience can be avoided by be- ing more' aware of pending failure of a heating system component, says. Car Care Canada of the Auto- motive Industries Association of Canada. In addition tao the fan or blower motor, other components of the sys- tem which may give warning sig- nals of failure are as follows: - The heater control valve, which may become sticky or totally in- operative. You're likely to notice stiffness in the panel control lever, Our up-to-date, friendly Service Department will be pleased to give your vehicle a complete winter readiness checkup. Your first tip-off will be an accumulation of mois- ture inside the car, where even de- frosters won't help. Heater and defroster duct hoses carry fresh air into the system and warmed air to locations beyond the heater core. When they're leaking, you'll lose heating/defrosting efficiency. - Heater hoses are the smaller hos- es in the cooling system that direct the hot coolant from the engine to the heater core. A leaking heater hose goes beyond simple dis- comfort and can ultimately leave you stranded on the side of the road. Because of the safety aspects of driving comfort and clear vision, the heating/defrost system is. a vi- tally important part of the vehicle, emphasizes Car Care Canada, and should be taken seriously when failure is indicated. Be alert to ear- ly warning signs such as inefficient heating of defrosting, unusual nois- es or smells. It's quicker, more convenient and usually less ex- ' pensive to have these malfunctions taken care of while they are only minor problems. (NU)—Among fears haunting motorists in the winter is being stranded with car trouble and put- ting themselves and their pas- sengers in jeopardy. Nearly 40 percent of road service calls are for cars that wgn't start. Most are due to lack of main- tenance. Frequently an aging bat- tery or electrical system is the cul- prit. But not always. `Don't leave things to chance this time of year" We check from hood to tailpipe! 611 Cedar Street Wingham, Ontario 519 357-4527 RES. 519 3571264 How to Avoid Car Trouble Begin with a diagnostic checkup. If a system or component is in mar- ginal condition, this may be . the only way to discover it. Diagnosis is especially important on newer en- gines with computerized controls, which sense discrepancies and com- pensate for them. This may cam- ouflage symptoms. When deteriora- tion of components exceeds the computer's ability to adjust, the system fails and the car won't start. Other areas of concern: • •Filters. They are critical on fuel - injected engines. •Cooling system. An engine that runs too cold is inefficient, vulner- able td rapid wear and a poor source of heat for occupants. Over- heating can cause serious damage to an engine. •Engine Oil. Oil that's too old and too dirty can' cause starting trouble and rapid wear. •Safety related systems. These in- clude windshield wipers, lights, tires, steering and suspension com- ponents. They're all critical when the elements are working against you.
