win opener
The Wingham Barry's Esso
Novices opened the regular sea-
son with a 5-1 victory over Sea -
forth.
Joel Riley led the Wingham
attack with three goals and one
assist.
Winger Jason Thompson
notched a goal when he jumped'
on a loose puck in the slot and
captian Brad Burton rounded out
the scoring for Wingham.
Nick Henderson stopped sev-
eral tough chances in the Wing -
ham net but lost the shut out bid
with three minutes remaining.
Wingham hosts Milverton
Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. and
then travel to Mitchell Sunday.
Jr. volleyballers
undefeated in
county league
The Madill Mustangs junior
boys volleyball team remained
unbeaten in Huron County
League play by sweeping the
Goderich Vikings last Tuesday.
The junior Mustangs downed
the Vikings 15-6 in the first
game, and scored a 15-2 deci-:
sion in the second game. In the
third game, Madill posted a 15-
13 victory.
The senior Mustangs dropped
all three games to Goderich to
have their league record fall to
5-7.
The Mustangs were at home
yesterday (Tuesday, Oct. 31) for
thatches against Goderich Vi-
kings Seaforth Golden Bears,
and then travel to Exeter on
Thursday for contests against
the South Huron Panthers and
the Central Huron Redmen of
Clinton.

The Murray McKague four-
some from Wingham fell 8-4 to
the Brian Scott rink of Allenford
in the third draw of ,the Grey
Bruce Major League Curling on
Oct. 22.
The McKague foursome re-
mains tied for last position with
Alex McNeill of the Grey Gran-
ite Club in the eight -rink Divi-
sion 'C' Algonquin Special Re-
serve Ale third event. Both rinks
have nine points. The McNeill
rink fell 8-4 to the Jim Trelford
foursome from the Bluewater
Club.
The Trelford and the Scott
rinks top the division with 24
points.
In other Division 'C' draws
on Oct. 22, Fred Fleet of Port El-
gin downed the Gary Twining
rink from the Bluewater Club 8-
3, and the Roy McCarthy four-
some from Wiarton outlasted
Gary Johnson of Durham 9-7.
Fleet and McCarthy are tied
for third with 19 points and
Twining and Johnson are tied
for fifth with 14 points.

BRUSSELS - The Brussels Bulls
outplayed the Walkerton Black -
hawks for almost 55 minutes Fri-
day evening, but it was the visiting
'Hawks who skated away with the
two points from the Western Jun-
ior 'C' Hockey League contest.
After giving up the first goal of
the game, the Bulls came back and
took a 3-2 lead into thesecond pe-
riod. Although the Bulls had more
good scoring chances than the
Blackhawks, Walkerton was able
to come back in the second and
gain a. 4-4 after 40 minutes of
play.
Walkerton scored the only two
goals of the third period despite
being outplayed by the Bulls.
Just when itappearedthe Bulls
were going to come back and gain
a draw, Murray Kaye received
seven minutes in the penalty box
for using one of the Blackhawks
as a punching bag. With just under
six minutes to go in the game,
Walkerton netted a power play
goal to ensure themselves a win,
Ironmen score two
impressive victories
as the goal appeared to deflate the
Bulls.
Brad Hayter opened the scoring
for Walkerton at 3:26 of the first
period as he got a break away at
the Bulls blueline, and beat Ryan
Fisk from close range.
Darin Alviano evened the score
at 1-1 on the power play at 7:59 as
he picked up a rebound at the edge
of the crease and poked it into the
net. Peter Ryter and Ryan Wright
earned assists.
Just 32 seconds later, the Bulls
took the lead as Sheldon Mustard
flipped the puck over the sprawled
Walkerton goalie.
The Blackhawks tied the score
at 2-2 at 10:14 as DJ. Selkirk re-
directed a pass through the slot
past Fisk. •
The Bulls regained the lead 40
Seconds later when Mustard fired
the loose puck into the net after
the Walkerton goalie was unable
to trap the puck. Cory Bridges and
Ryan Kipfer received assists.

the Midwestern Junior 'B' League
on Nov. 10, against the Patriots on
Nov. and then the Ironmen on the

The Ironmen took 15 of the 32
minors assessed by referee L.D.
Crawford, were assessed one of
the Walkerton goalie on the short -
side.
The Blackhawks evened the
score at 4:30 of the second period
when Chris Farrow broke into the
clear and beat Fisk with a low
shot.
The Bulls regained the lead at
6:45 as Aaron Barrie scored with a
shot over the fallen goalie. Ryter
and Wright received assists.
At 18:34 of the middle period,
the Blackhawks pulled even as
Farrow's drilled a shot betwjri
Fisk's pads.
Dave Wilson put the Black -
hawks ahead to stay at 3:11 of the
final period as he tucked the puck
across the line after Jamie Taylor
lost the puck in his crease.
Farrow's third marker of the
game at 14:09, on the power play,
ensured the victory for the Black -
hawks.

Gerth runs to WOSSA gold
heading for All•Ontario meet
Sjaan Gerth is the only Madill
athlete advancing to the OFSAA
cross-country meet being held this
weekend in London.
Madill runners made their pres-
ence known last Thursday at the
WOSSA cross-country champion-
ship held at the Springwater Con-
servation Area, near Aylmer, as
over 600 of the best runners in
western Ontario took part in the
event.
Billedas an unknown, Gerth
battled the entire 5,000 -metre dis-
tance of the midget boys race with
a runner from Woodstock. Even
though neither runner was separat-
ed by more than 20 metres during
the race, Gerth made a final sprint
to the finish line to take the gold
medal in a time 18:08 minutes. '
Jamie Good was less than one
minute behind his teammate as he
took a sixth place finish with a
time of 19 minutes flat.
The junior boys team of Dennis
Lubbers, John Deyell, Jason
Pritchard, B.J. Prince, and Aaron
Barrie were fifth. The girls team
placed sixth overall and' the boys
team was seventh overall.
