Ironman salvage
draws with Erin
LISTOWEL - After splitting a pair
of pre -season exhibition games
with opponents in the Western
Junior 'C' Hockey league earlier
this month, the Wingham Ironmen
took on the Erin Shamrocks of the
Georgian Bay League this past
weekend.
The home -and -home series was
played Saturday evening at the
Listowel Memorial Arena and
then at the Erin Arena Sunday af-
ternoon.
Both games ended in draws.
After taking a 2-0 lead early in
the game Saturday, the Ironmen
needed a power play marker with
17 seconds remaining in the con-
test to salvage a 6-6 tie.
The Ironmen scored the lone
goal of the third period Sunday af-
ternoon as they skated to a 1-1
draw.
Penalties proved to be the dif-
ference Saturday evening, as Erin
tallied three power play markers
and the Ironmen managed just the
one, despite have numerous oppor-
tunities, including a pair of 'two-
man advantage situations at the
start of the third period.
Erin outskated the• Ironmen
through most of the contest, but it
was unnessary penalties and
strong goaltending by the Wing -
ham netminders that prevented.

The Ironmen opened the scoring
at 1:25 of the first period when
Scott MacDonald drifted a shot
past starting Erin netminder Chad
Hughes. Rob Wallace and Mark
Wilson earned assists on the mark-
er.
Brett Sangster gave the Ironmen
a 2-0 lead at 7:46 when he back-
handed the puck past Hughes after
skating down the slot. Terry Wil-
liams and Jason Thompson re-
ceived the assists.
Jason Fairciove netted Erin's
first marker at 10:13 after being
set-up at the edge of the crease by
Eric Medieros.
Eric evened the score at two 47
seconds later when Medieros
drilled a high shot over the shoul-
der of starting Wingham netmind-
er Brad Knight.
Sangster's second.. goal of the
game, with 31 seconds left in the
period, put the Ironmen ahead 3-2
after 20 minutes of play. He back -
LEGION EUCHRE
Sixteen tables of euchre were in
play at the Wingham Legion Hall
last Monday evening.
Agnes Gaunt was high lady and
Lois Chamney, second high. June
Elliott, playing as a man, was high
and Lloyd Montgomery, second
high. Ethel Willis had the most
lone hands for the ladies and Irlma
Edgar, Nell Johnston and Stuart
Chamney all tied for most lone
hands for the men with Mrs. Edgar
the eventual winner.
Draw prizes went to Merle
McFarlane, Helen Martin, Oscar
Schefter and Marie Chittick. The
next Legion card party, a shoot,
will be held on Monday, Oct. 2.

the Erin goalie had stopped Tim
Good from point blank range.
Erin tied the score at three at
8:06 of the middle as Medieros
beat Jamie Roulston on the power
play.
Just 59 seconds later, Justin
Murray scored to put the Ironmen
in front by a goal. Eric disputed
the goal, saying it was kicked in,
but referee Rob Veccia allowed
the goal. Tim Schultz and Nick
Goetz received the assists.
Wingham took a two -goal ad-
vantage at 12:43 when Good stole
the puck off an Erin defender and
tucked the puck under the goalie.
Jason Meriam and Eric Sikkenga
received assists.
Medieros netted his third of the
game for Erin at 14:20, on the
power play, when he redirected a
shot from the point, under Rouls-
ton.
Tyson Briden fired the equalizer
at 18:53, poking a rebound past
Roulston with Erin on the power
play.
With four seconds left to play in
the middle period, Steve Robson
backhanded the puck past Rouls-
ton, with Erin enjoying the man
advantage, to give Erin the lead.
Erin's Danny Haw was given a
five-minute checking from behind
at 4:38 of the third period. At
5:32, Trevor Kennedy took a
slashing penalty, but the Ironmen
wereunable to score. At 7:58 Roy
Stuckless took a roughing penalty,
and again the Ironmen were un-
able to score during the two-man
advantage.
Erin's Arden McIntosh took a
five-minute cross checking penal-
ty at 19:01 after decking Goetz be-
hind the Wingham goal.
Murray's second goal of the
game, 41 seconds later tied the
game at six. Mike Heffron and
Good earned assists.
Tim Swan was in goal for
Wingham in the third period. •
Troy Dosman netted Wing -
ham's lone goal Sunday afternoon,
at 7:05 of the third period. Sang-
ster earned the assist. •
Peter Mashinter scored for Erin
in the first period of the penalty
filled contest.

Harold Carter was first in the 40 -
point singles competition of horse-
shoes play last Thursday at the Wing -
ham Sportsmen Club. He had four
wins and was +26. Jack Arnold was
runner-up with four wins and +20.
Paul McKee was third with three
wins and +66. Jim Nelson was fourth
with three wins and +28. Al McKen-
zie was fifth with one win and +97.
John Schaus was sixth with zero wins
