Stingers
split games
at DASA
tourney
After winning their first two
games of the Ontario Amateur
Softball Association (OASA) In-
termediate 'D' tournament held
in Glencoe on the weekend, the
Belmore Stingers dropped their
next two contests.
Dave Eadie posted the victory
in the Stingers opening contest
as they downed Elmvale 3-0.
Jay Marston clubbed a home
run for the Stingers.
Paul Tolton clubbed a two -
run home run in the second con-
test as the Stingers scored a 2-0
decision over Williamsford.
Chris Eadie recorded the vic-
tory on the mound.
Dave Eadie was the losing
hurler in the Stingers third con-
test as they were edged 3-2 by
Merlin.
Jeff Fischer clubbed a home
run in a losing effort.
Don Busby had an RBI triple
and a single in the Stingers
fourth and final game as they
fell 4-3 to Shakespeare in 12 in-
nings.
Chris Eadie was handed the
setback on the mound.
16 teams
compete
in lawn
bowling
tourney
The annual National Trust
lawn bowling tournament was
held Saturday at the Wingham
Lawn Bowling Club.
Three 12 -end games were
played, with 16 teams from
Stratford, Mitchell, Port Elgin,
Brussels, Lucknow, and Wing-
harn competing.
First prize went to Stuart
Bryans of Mitchell with three
wins and 50.
Mac MacKay of Wingham
was second with three wins and
44+3.
Third prize went to George
Boehmer of Port Elgin with two
and 39+1.
Fourth prize went to Ross
Pepper of Mitchell with two
wins and 38.
Bill Nichols of Stratford was
fifth with two wins and 37.
The consolation prize was
won by Dick Nettleton of Luck -
now.
Each player received a gift,
compliments of National Trust.
Belmore
wins series
'opener
Belmore Stingers scored a 10-
7 decision over the Palnrerston
Midget Imperials - last Tuesday
evening to take a one game lead
in the best three of five Bluewa-
ter Fastball League semi-final
series.
Dave Eadie posted the deci-
sion on the mound for the Sting-
ers.
Chad Reading was handed the
setback on the Palmerston
mound.
Brian Busby had a Metric rttn
for the Stingers.
Two more games of the series
will be played this week. The
winner will play the winner of
the Chepstow-Wingharn series.

BELMORE - The Belmore Cubs
captured the Ontario Amateur
Softball Association (OASA) Mid-
get 'D' championship on Sunday
by downing Milverton 6-4 in the
final game.
The Cubs opened the scoring in
the bottom of the first inning, only
to have Milverton take the lead in
the third inning.
Belmore took advantage of
some sloppy fielding in the fourth
inning to put three runs across the
plate to take a 4-2 advantage.
The Cubs added single runs in
the fifth and sixth innings, while
Milverton put single runs across
the plate in the top of the sixth and
the top of the seventh.
Steve Romphf went the distance
on the mound for the Cubs to post
the victory.
Dean Buchanan started on the
mound for Milverton, but was re-
lieved by Scott Baillie. Craig Fras-
er finished up on the mound.
Scott Smith and Mike Heisz had
two hits for Belmoreith Wes
Reinhardt, Dave McDonald, Ryan
Clancy, Dave Jacques and Dave
Mays getting one hit apiece. Terry
Graf had . one hit and drove in a
pair of runs.
Buchanan had three hits for
Milverton with Jamie Roulston,
Scott MacDonald, Baillie, and
Fraser getting one hit apiece.
Milverton's Buchanan was se-
lected as the tournament most val-
uable player.

The Cubs were undefeated in
the tournament, while Milverton
came from the 'B' side to reach
the final.
Paced by a home run and triple
by Jason McDonald the Cubs
scored a 7-2 decision' over Shake-
speare in their opening game of
the tourney. They then scored a
10-0 decision over New Liskeard
and then blanked Milverton 3-0 to
advance to the championship.
Milverton defeated Sheffield -
Camden in their first game and
downed Fisherville 12-2 before
losing to Milverton. They then
went up against Fisherville, and

1995-96 Western Junior 'C' Hockey League season with training camp sessions on the week-
end. The Ironmen had two sessions at the Listowel Arena and the Bulls had three work outs at

Training camps under way

Wingham Ironmen and the
Brussels Bulls of the Western Jun-
ior 'C' Hockey League began their
training camps in earnest . on the
weekend.
the ironmen held 'Sessions,' Sat-
urday and Sunday, at the Listowel
Memorial .Arena while the' Bulls
held. sessions Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday at the Seaforth Arena.
Wingham had about 50 players,
including five veterans, scrimmag-
ing on. the weekend: .
With Jason Reid at the training
camp of the Oshawa Generals of
the OHL, the Ironmen had six
goalies in camp on Saturday and
nine on Sunday, out to replace
him.

Keith Cameron will be ducting the
number of players down to worka-
ble number of two teams, between
40 and 45 players, for the three
sessions this weekend,

on Sunday, and from 3:30 to 5:30
p.m. on Monday.
More veterans are expected to
be at camp this weekend. The first
pre -season exhibition game for the
Ironmen is Sept. -8 when they trav-
el to Port Elgin to play the Wiar-
ton Redmen at 8:30 p.m. On Sept.
9, the Ironmen face off against de-
fending league champion Mount
Forest Patriots at the Listowel
Arena, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The Bulis had about 50 players
at camp during the weekend ses-
' sions, including four goaltenders.
Assistant coach Mike Henry
said the three weekend sessions
were for rookies only, although a
number of veterans did take to the
ice.
The players came from Brus-
sels, ,Blyth, IVtonkton, Wallace,
Listowel and other areas in mid-
western Ontario.
The rookies were given a hard
work out by coach Jim Bridges as
they prepare for their exhibition
game against the Seaforth Cente-
naires rookies on Friday, at the
Seaforth Arena, beginning at 8
p.m.
Coach Bridges had the players
working on the basics, from pass-
ing and shooting to skating and
checking.
Following the rookies exhibi-
tion game against the Junior 'D'
Centenaires, Bulls will have vete-
rans joining the rookies for train-
ing sessions on Saturday and Sun-
day from 1 to 4 p.m., at the
Seaforth Arena.
The first pre -season exhibition
contest for Brussels will be Sept. 9
when they skate against the New
Hamburg Spirit 83 at 7 p.m. at the
Columbia Ice Field in Waterloo.
Joe Kerr is the Bulls assistant
general manager for the 1995-96
season. The Bulls are still looking
for a trainer.
The Western Junior "C' all-star
game will be played in Wiarton on
Saturday, Jan. 6. The Bulls will be
hosting the league awards banquet
at the Brussels -Morris -Grey Com-
munity Centre auditorium on Sat-
urday, Feb. 3.

and then Belmore shut out Milver-
ton 3-0.
In 'B' -side contests, Lyn
downed Sheffield -Camden 5-3,
Phelpston blanked Shakespeare 7-
0, Lyn beat New Liskeard 13-3,
Fisherville got past Phelpston 10-
6, Fisherville outlasted Lyn 6-4
and Milverton blanked Fisherville
4-0.

The hard-hitting Monkton team
pounded the ball the entire game,
J. Earl started on the mound for
Monkton and lasted three innings
before being relieved by J.C.
Smith. They gave up five hits and
four walks and combined for sev-

Pegg lasted four innings on the
mound for Belgrave before Brent
Robinson took over for the fifth
inning. They allowed 10 hits and
three walks and managed a single
strike out between them.
Pegg had a double and single
and drove in two runs in three at -
bats. Left fielder Chris Stewart
rapped out a pair of singles and
knocked in a run in three plate ap-
pearances.
Game three in the best two of
three series will be in Belgrave on
Sunday, beginning at 8 p.m.
Colts, Steelhawks
unsuccessful at
OASA playdowns
The Wingham Colts and Wrox-
eter Intermediate Steelhawks were
each handed a pair of defeats at
the Ontario Amateur Softball As-
sociation (OASA) Intermediate
'C' tournament held in Merlin on
the weekend.
The Colts went up against the
Mitchell Mets in their, opening
game and were handed a 6-3 set-
back.

First base player Steve Bourne
gave the Colts a 2-0 lead in the
second inning as he rapped out a
bases -loaded single.
The Mets took the lead in ths'•
. third inning on Tom Chessel's
three -run home run.
Tom McDonald went the dis-
tance on the mound for the Colts,
allowing seven hits and two walks
and striking out three.
Dan McClure threw an eight -
hitter and fanned five in going the
distance for the Mets.
Bourne was 3 -for -4 at the plate
for the Colts with centre fielder
Ryan Deyell getting two hits in
four at -bats. McDonald was 1 -for -
3 at the plate.
The Colts ran into a strong
p'itbher in their second game as
they fell 1-0 to Wanapitei.
