Through Music conference attended by Elgie WROXETER--Marilyn Elgie of Tumberry attended the ETM (Edu- cation Through Music) leaders' conference in Grand Rapids, Mich., late last month. The conference brought together Richards Institute staff members from Canada and the United States to study through playing and singing "song experi- ence games". They also discussed and reflected upon the art of edu- cating. Mary Helen Richards and her ETM staff has, for over 25 years, explored song as a catalyst for pro- moting human development. Rich- ards always has believed that "song is the right of every human being". Mrs. Elgie also took part in the first week of a three-week interna- tional summer course (from July 30 to Aug. 4). This Grand Rapids course drew over 100 participants from the United States, Japan, Can- ada and China who gathered to- gether through song for an experi- ence in music and human interac- tion. Each day consisted of time spent with a group of adults studying to- gether, then an observation of ETM staff working with some mothers and their very young children, fol- lowed by an observation with older. children. The finale each day consisted of a "Comalia", a coming together of all the participants to play and sing. Mrs. Elgie commented that, "This time often sent shivers up my spine at the beauty of all the voices to- gether -- often singing better than the sound of a cathedral choir -- as I was surrounded by the voices." Mrs. Elgie says she hopes to continue to enjoy Education Through Music for many years to come. She recommends this experi- ence for everyone. 6* e £ L mx4Siu stsi. • . .: fffiAAVala/d'H:,a y'i yv" ."<:•r 3 a :< s s a^ A ••,A1( : •AtaLi r.'3%'. wF 1.-,x Ward & Uptigrove ,s0 t2S9 *M.
