Stingers
sweep
Steelhawks
Belmore Stingers scored a 14-
3 decision over the Intermediate
Steelhawks last Tuesday to win
their Bluewater Fastball League
best two of three quarter -final
series in straight games.
With the sweep of the Steel -
hawks, the Stingers advance to
the best three of five semi-final
round against the Palmerston
Midget Imperials.
Jeff Fischer posted the win on
the mound for the Stingers
against the Steelhawks, allowing
just three hits.
Jeff Sanburn was tagged with
the loss on the mound for the
Steelhawks.
Brian Busby had two hits, in-
cluding a triple, in three at -bats.
Jeff Dickson had a pair of hits in
five plate appearances.
In an exhibition game on Fri-
day, the Stingers Zayed the Bel -
more Midgets OASA team to a
I-1 draw.
Dave Eadie was on the mound
for the Stingers, recording 14
strike outs.
Romphf was on the mound
for the Midgets, recording 11
strike outs in four innings, and
not allowing a single hit.
Bantam girls
win north
championship
The Wingham Bantam girls
softball team has captured the
Tri -County 'B' north champion-
ship, downing Fordwich 21-5
last Wednesday evening in
Wingham.
Lindsay Baier, Victoria
Waechter and Melissa Riley
shared the pitching duties for
Wingham in the winning cause.
Riley also drove in two runs
With a triple at the plate.
The team now awaits the win-
ner of the Tri -County 'B' south
division, which must be decided
by this Sunday, Aug. 27. Wing -
ham will meet Seaforth, Win-
throp, or Blyth in the final.

Seafortb put six runs across
the plate in the top of the fourth
inning, last Wednesday, to win
the first game of their best two
of three bantam boys softball
playoff series with Belgrave.
Seaforth scored two runs in
the top of the first inning. Bel -
grave evened the score in the
bottom of the first as Luke
Lockridge and Jamie McCallum
crossed the plate.
Seaforth plated three runs in
the top of the second, but Bel -
grave was unable to score any
runs.
Three runs in the top of the
third inning gave Seaforth an 8-
2 advantage.
Belgrave replied with seven
runs in the bottom of the third to
take a one -run lead. Crossing the
plate for Belgrave were Adam
Garniss, Jamie McCallum, Dean
Walker, Marc Alexander, Rob
Burkholder, Mike Sanders, and
Jeremy Campbell.
Seaforth scored six times in
the top of the fourth inning to
take a 14-9 advantage, and Bel -
grave was unable to score any
additional runs in their final at -
bat to suffer the setback in the
first game.
Motocross...The fourth annual Grand National Motocross championships was held at
Walton on the weekend with competitors coming from all over Ontario, Canada and the United
States. There were numerous classes of competition, ranging from the 60cc class to the pro
class. The motocross competition attracted thousands of spectators during the four days of the
event.
Juveniles advance to next round
Belgrave Juveniles scored a 5-4
decision over Blyth Decorating
last Thursday to advance to the
next round of Huron County Fast -
ball League playoffs against
Monkton.
Belgrave scored one in the first
on Brad Robinson's double and
Keith Todd's single. They added
two more in the second as Eric
Andrew walked, Dennis Winte-
mute singled, Todd Machan
walked, and Robinson cranked a
two -run single down the third base
line.
Blyth scored twice in the third
on a walk, a triple and two singles.
Belgrave added another in the
fifth on Mike Greig's single, a sac-
rifice bunt by Todd, and an error
on Andrew's fly ball.
Blyth tied the game at four in
the 'bottom of the fifth in two
walks, an intentional walk and an
error.
Belgrave won the game in the
sixth as Machan singled and
scored on Robinson's double. The
victory enabled the Juveniles to
sweep the series over Blyth after
winning the first game 6-4.
Second base player Robinson
finished the game with two dou-
bles and a single in four at -bats.
Catcher Wintemute had a pair of
singles in three plate appearances.
Warren Moore had two hits in
three at -bats for Blyth and Mike
Bromley clubbed a triple in three
plate appearances.
Brent Robinson started on the
mound for the Juveniles, and Joel
Pegg came on in relief to post the
win. They allowed four hits and
seven walks and combined for five
strike outs.
Moore went the distance on the
mound for Blyth, giving up eight
hits and six walks and striking out
four.
Twenty-seven compete in invitational
Close to 30 bantam, juvenile,
and junior golfers took to the links
at the Wingham Golf and Curling
Club on Friday to compete in the
annual invitational tournament.
Competition got under way at
10 a.m. with a shotgun start. Six
golfers competed in the 17 -18 -
year -old junior division, 10 in the
14 -16 -year-old juvenile division
and 11 competed in the 13 -years
and under bantam division.
Chris Marion of Seaforth took
the low gross honors for the junior
event with an 18 -hole score of 75.
Derek Knight of Wingham was
runner-up with a 76. '
Doug Greb of Kincardine won
Belmore hosting
OASA Midget `D'
tournament
the low net honors with a 69.
Greg Wolfkamp of Mitchell and
Adam Knight of Wingham fin-,
ished the 18 -hole juvenile division
event tied at 78. Wolfkamp won
the low gross honors on the sec-
ond sudden -death playoff hole.

Some of the best midget -aged
ball players in Ontario will.invade
the Belmore area this weekend to
compete in the Ontario Amateur
Softball Association (OASA) Mid-
get 'D' tournament.
Eight teams from as far away as
New Liskeard and eastern Ontario
will be competing in the tourna-
ment which will be played on ball
fields in both Belmore and Formo-
sa.
Competition gets under way at
9 a.m. Saturday at both locations,
with the championship being
played at the Belmore ball field
Sunday afternoon.
Opening the competition on the
field in Belmore will be Centre-
ville and Milverton. The first
game of the tournament in Formo-
sa will have Lyn going against
Fisherville.
The second game in Belmore
will have Shakespeare going
against Belmore, and in the second
contest on the Formosa field
Phelpston will go against New
Liskeard.
The championship game will be
played at 1 p.m. Sunday, on the
field in Belmore, with a second
game, if required, going at 3 p.m.
Five of the seven teams in the
Bluewater Fastball League will be
competing in OASA champion-
ship tournaments this weekend.
The Wingham Colts, Clifford 4
Aces, Chepstow Aces, and Wrox-
eter Intermediate Steelhawks will
be competing in the Intermediate
'C' tournament in Merlin, and the
Belmore Stingers travel to Glen-
coe to compete in the provincial
Intermediate 'D' championship.
Also competing in the Interme-
diate 'C' tournament in Merlin
will be Port Perry, Ingersoll,
Frankford, Mitchell, Wahnapitae,
Caledonia, Minesing, Ayton and
the host Merlin squad. Wingham
receives a bye in the ,opening
round.
The Steelhawks play Caledonia
at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with Chep-
stow playing Wahnapitae in the
opening round and Clifford going
against Port Perry.
At the Intermediate 'D' tourna-
ment in Glencoe, the Stingers will
be competing against Stafford-
ville, Merlin, Warkworth or Col-
borne, Grafton, Elmvale or Mines-
ing, Williamsford, Fenelon Falls,
Zephyr, Shakespeare, the Northern
Softball Association (NSA) repre-
sentative, Stoney Point, Camden
East, and Glencoe.
Colts blank Clifford
to advance to league

Doug Greb, junior lovi riet.
Tom McDonald hurled a four -
hit shut out last Thursday evening
as the Wingham Colts scored a 6-0
decision over the Clifford 4 Aces
to advance to the semi-final round
of the Bluewater Fastball League
playoffs.
Clifford won the first game of
the best two of three quarter -final
series, but the Colts won the next
two game, by shut outs, to win the
series in three games.
The Colts now go against the
Chepstow Aces in.the best three of
five semi-final series. The first
game of the series was played in
Chepstow earlier this week.
Left fielder Jason Daw paced
the Colts at the plate with a pair of
triples and a single. Third base
player Mike MacKay rapped out
three singles and had two stolen
bases. Second base player Tim
Currie also collected three singles.
Right fielder Rob Harrison had
a single and double and McDonald
clouting a triple and shprt stop Ja-
son Goodall contributing a single
to the offence.
Don Leslie had a double and
triple for Clifford. Reg Walls had
a double and Don Foerter rapped
out a single.
McDonald recorded eight strike
outs in going the distance on the •
mound for.the win.
Reg Walls was tagged with the
loss on the mound for Clifford. He
stuck out two.
Daw hurled a three -hit shut out
last Tuesday evening as the Colts
scored a 7-0 decision over Clifford
to even the best two of three Blue -
water Fastball League playoff se-
ries at one game apiece.
Joel Rank started on the mound
for the 4 Aces with Reg Walls tak-
ing over in relief.
MacKay had a 'single and triple
to lead the Colts offensively, with
Harrison getting a double. Currie
rapped out a single and drove in
the Colts first run in the second in-
ning.
