am Lindon Motel opens
doors after extensive renovations
The Ad ance T me
The Wingham Lindon Motel
held an official opening last
Wednesday evening at its location
Ant south of Wingham on Highway
No. 4.
A group of well-wishers was on
band to watch as Monis Township
Reeve Bert Elliott cut the ribbon to
declare the motel officially open.
The 35 -year-old motel was pur-
chased late last year by Don and
Donna Watson of Gorrie and John
and Linda Cox, Clinton. They took
possession on Dec. 29 and have
spent the past eight months spruc-
ing up the motel, inside and out.
The result is a pleasing facility
with completely remodeled rooms',
bright and tastefully .decorated.
New windows, fixtures and heating
and air conditioning systems have
been installed. Of course, it doesn't
hurt to own a building centre, as the
Watsons do at Gorrie, But both
men concede that the motel has
been the "baby" of .their wives,
thus the name "Lindon" for Linda
and Donna.
• The ladies leave the day-to-day
operation of the motel to managers
Tina Klerks and Mark Belanger.
Even though this is the computer
age, Mrs. Watson said many people
.stjll travel for business, adding that
salesmen provide the mainstay of
the.rnoiel's clientele. However, she
also is surprised at how busy the
motel has been this summer with
bookings for weddings and reun-
ions. And it hasn't hurt to have the
Uhion Gas crews working in the
area as some of those people have
made the motel their home . base
during the week.

with a view...Raymond and Elinor Neill, operators of a local bed and
breakfast business, were welcomed by Linda Cox and Donna Watson to the official opening of
the Wingham Lindon Motel last week. Mrs. Watson and Mrs. Cox, along with their husbands,
Don and John, are the owners of the newly -renovated motel.
Motel does not serve meals, Mrs.
Watson said motel staff are pleased
to recommend any of the fine local
restaurants. They also have a good
rapport with owners of local bed
and breakfast operations and agree
there is room for both in the mar-
ket.
spute in Morris
before council Aug. 8
By JIM BROWN
The Advance -Times
A dispute over gravel has fur-
ther strained the relationship be-
tween neighbors in Morris Town-
ship and was, before the regular
township council' meeting last
Tuesday evening.
The township has agreed to .
bring in fence viewers in an at-
tempt to solve the situation.
, The dispute between Rolf
Huber and Glenn and Norma Gol•
-
ley is over gravel on the former
CNR right-of-way.
The former railway right-of-
way has been surveyed and divid-
ed down the the middle, length
wise. Huber claims that the Gol-
leys have been removing gravel
Horn the land width wise.
Huber claimed that half of his
gravel was still on the Golley
property and he was concerned
that the Golley's would put up a
fence before he could remove all
his gravel.
The Golleys would like to have
Huber to remove the gravel as
soon as 'possible so that they can
pat up a fence.
Reeve Bert Elliott noted that
Huber should have the gravel
moved and stockpiled if the Gol-
leys wanted to put up a fence.
Huber said he shouldn't have to
bear the cost of stockpiling the
gravel, and that he should be able
to get the gravel at his own discre-
tion.
Reeve Elliott said tliat if'the'
Golleys want to put up a fence,
they should be permitted to.
"It's my decision when I use
my gravel," said Huber.
The reeve said that perhaps a
time limit be imposed on Huber
for getting his gravel off the rail
bed.
Glenn Golley said that he want-
ed to put up a fence.
Huber said if the Golleys stock-
piled his gravel, where he wanted,
he would settle.
"If they moved the gravel to my
property, then they can put up a
fence," he said. "I'm not moving
my gravel just because you want
to put up a fence."
Huber added that he shouldn't
have to he taking his fence up and
down to get his gravel.
Norma Colley . said that they
were not waiting for 10 years for
Huber to move the gravel.
"Why should we have to move
the gravel," she said. "There was
a verbal agreement."
Huber said that no one said that
the gravel would be taken out
without the deed. Norma Golley
said that other owners have al-
ready got the land worked up
without the deed being signed.
"I'm not moving the gravel un-
til I need it," said Huber.
Reeve Elliott said that the grav-
el already removed couldn't be put
back.
"I really can't see a problem,"
he said. "Maybe you' people can
work things out. If you can't come
up with an agreement, then come
back to council."
The reeve said all Huber had to
do was rent a bulldozer and move
the gravel to his property, and
have the problem over with.
Huber said it was a good idea,
but he shouldn't have to bear the
financial burden.
Norma Golley said they
shouldn't be obligated to someone
else's wishes.
"Council can talk to fence view-
ers, and let us know what they
say," she said.
Council agreed to have the
fence viewers review the problem
and come up with a solution.
Store spending $750,000
Continued from front page
program. Ryan said, MacGregor
found it preferable to sell. It gave
him an opportunity to know that his
staff members would be provided
jobs and it gave Valu -mart a ready
source of trained etrhployees.
Valu -mart is spending $750,000
to renovate the former Zehrs store
with Aug. 28 as the completion
date. "We're sure we will have a
store that people will be pleased
with."
What some members of council
were not pleased with was the pos-
sibility of a downtown store re-
maining empty.
When Councillor Bill McGrath
asked if National Grocers intended
to keep the former K Food store
closed for the duration. of the lease,
Ryan said, "No", assuring council
members that National Grocers is
"actively looking" for tenants for
that store. However, it does not in-
tend to operate a second grocery
store there, nor would it lease the
building to another grocery retailer.
"Wingham has a lot of senior cit-
izens." said Layton. "They walk to
the post office, they walk to the
bank, they walk to the grocery
store. The' residents of Wingham
are madder than hell and I think
they will go elsewhere (to do their
-grocery shopping)."
Ryan admitted that perhaps some
people may go out of town to do
their shopping. He also addedthat
he cannot stop another retailer from
coming to town and locating some-
where other than the former K
Food store.
In answer to his question, Mayor
Don Carter was assured that Valu -
mart will continue to offer delivery
service and take telephone orders.
A bus service from the downtown
to the plaza even is being consid-
ered, added Bujeya.
"Well, maybe we (council)
shouldn't be so , quick to judge,"
conceded the mayor. ,
Alex MacGregor, former K Food
owner, reiterated what Ryan and
Bujeya had been saying about
changes in the marketplace. He es-
timated that at least $l million in
sales will shift weekly to the new
superstores.
"If 1 could have operated two
stores profitably in Wingham, I
would have," said MacGregor.
"But the numbers just weren't
there...1 believe the community will
be well served by these changes."
As council members had no
mote questions, the visitors took
their leave.
Following a much-needed face-
lift, the Wingham Lindon Motel is
up and running and ready for the
future.
