Strikers capture North Huron
coed soccer championship
Downs Clinton Captors in final
The Wingham Optimist Strikers
battled the heat and 12 other teams
to capture the North Huron Co-ed
Atom Soccer League champion-
ship on Saturday. The tournament
was played in Clinton.
Action got under way Friday
evening with the Strikers narrowly
defeating the Lucknow Mustangs,
2-1. Tom Pettigrew scored the
winning goal when he recovered a
goal kick. Shawn Walker netted
the first Wingham goal, assisted
by Mark Chippa.
Strong goaltending by the Mus-
tangs frustrated Wingham in the
first half.
The Strikers got off to another
slow start Saturday against the
Lucknow Lions, but turned it on in
the second half to post a convinc-
ing 5-0 win.
Billy McGrail paced the Strik-
ers attack with three goals. Curtis
Thornton and Walker also scored.
Forward Tim Reaman was strong
up -front, but failed to find the net
on several good rushes.
In the semi-final, the Strikers
went up against previously unbeat-
en Wingham Hounds, and the play
was intense from the opening
kickoff.
Femi Omole, who had a strong
weekend, jumped on a rebound for
the opening goal of the game. The
Strikers went up by two on a goal
by Walker. McGrail ensured the
win with a second half goal to
make the final score 3-0 for the
Strikers.
Tom Pettigrew was in net and
made a big save in the first half
and turned back a penalty shot late
in the second half.
Jeff Drost, Laurita McGrail and
Katie Pettigrew played strong on
defence, turning back the Hounds
on several rushes.
The win over the Hounds put
the Strikers into the final against
the highly -touted Clinton Captors,
a team made up entirely of 11 year
olds.
The Strikers showed they still
had some ability, and surprised
everyone with a convincing 6-0
win.
Ashley Heffer, who had run
mites in the semi-final game be-
fore collapsing from the heat, re-
covered in time for the final, and
1
scored her first two goals of the
season. Chippa, Walker, Tom Pet-
tigrew, and Billy McGrail added
singles.
Adam Skinn bobbled a bad ball,
to record the shut out. Halfbacks
Owen Matthews and Tom Mont-
gomery were towers of strength in
the mid -field.
Members of the team include
Katie Pettigrew, Adam Skinn
Tom Montgomery, Tom Petti-
grew, Laurita McGrail, Bill
McGrail, Shawn Walker, Mark
Chippa, Ashley Heffer, Tim Rea -
man, Femi Omole, Owen Mat-
thews, and Curtis Thornton. Brigit
Davies and Elizabeth and Kathryn
Askes were on holidays. The
coaches were John Chippa and
Scott Pettigrew.

in the tournament were Eric
Camm, Fraser Kuyvenhoven, Brit-
tany Catftpbell, Tabitha Lindsay,
Pete Mellor, Marita Harrinen,

er, Brent Martin, Alicia Bakelaar,
Jeff Maronet, Matt Rozendal, and
John Haines. Substituting for va-
cationing starters were squirts
Shawn Maronet, Andrew Glassier
and Neil Camm.
The Wingham were handed a 3-
0 by the Clinton Commotion in
their first game, Friday evening.
Paced by the four -goal efforts
of Eric Camm and Martin, the
Wings shut out Clinton Caboodles
10-0 Saturday. Single markers
were added by Kuyvenhoven and
Tyson Glassier. Assists were re-
ceived by Eric Camm (3); Tyson
Glassier (2), Harrinen (2); Lindsay
(1); Martin (1); and Neil Camm
(1). Andrew Glassier missed a
chance for a goal when the whistle
blew to end the game.
The Wings went up, against the
tough Goderich Legionnaires in
their semi-final contest. The ab-
sence of four starters was evident
in the second half when Goderich
scored two unanswered goals to
eliminate the Wings.
The Wings travelled to Clinton
last Tuesday to play the Captors.
Regular's playing for Wingham
were Alicia Bakelaar, Eric Camm,
Tabitha Lindsay, Pete Mellor, Jeff
Maronet, Marita Harrinen, Fraser
Kuyvenhoven, Mary Beth Brown,
and John Haines. Squirts Neil
Camm and Shawn Maronet were
added to bring the number of
players to 11.
The Wings hung in tough
against an experienced squad of
I1 -year-old Atoms. The teams
played a scoreless first half, but
the heat and humidity took its toll
in the second half on the younger
Wingham squad as Clinton scored
three unanswered goals. Brad
Greidanus scored two and Chris
Rosebdom added a single.
