Joining Mrs. Harding at tonight
performance will be numerous of
er local war brides who answere
an advertisement placed in loc
newspapers, including The A
vance-Times, earlier this year.
Among the group will be Joa
Pedersen of East Wawanosh Town
ship and her husband Pete. Whe
Mrs. Pedersen replied to the a
some weeks ago, she had no ide
she would be sharing the spotligh
with other local war brides, sayin
she thought it might be a good wa
to get some theatre tickets.
"This Year, Next Year" will mir-
ror the experiences of many wa
brides, mere girls caught up the
• whirlwind of romance who left
their homes and families to make
new lives in a strange land with
husbands they hardly knew.
Joan Pedersen was born in 1923
in Campewell, a suburb of London.
As her father was a stock broker as-
sociated with Lloyd's of London,
the family moved to the more pre-
stigious neighborhood of Becken-
harn in 1928.
However, tragedy stuck two
years later when little Joan's father
died. He was only 45 and his death
sent the family from well-to-do to
scraping for its existence. Joan's
mother went to work as. a seam-
stress and housekeeper, while her
three older brothers helped to sup-
port the family.
Joan left school at the age of 14
to go to work as a file clerk. After
the war was declared and the
"blitzkreig" started, many people
left London for the country, but
Joan ;and,,hes motile, , rgmainql,
sleeping in outdoor bomb shelter at
nights. Joan worked s a switch-
board operator, a clerk at Wool-
worth's and finally as a factory pay
Clerk.
One night in December of 1942
she met a young Pete Pedersen at a
dance. The handsome, square -
jawed young man came from Cana-
da, but had been born in Denmark.
He was quiet and shy and as Joan

remembers, not a very good dancer,
as he kept stepping on her toes with
his army, boots.
Although' Vete` aid not" say much;
Joan came to enjoy spending time
with him and the two kept in touch
when he went to the continent with
his heavy artillery unit. They mar-
ried on June 23, 1945 and their
wedding photograph shows the
couple in the garden of Joan's
mother's London home.
Two weeks later, Pete was
shipped back to Can ad
a. Joan fol-
lowed him almost one year aboard
the "Aquitania," which pulled into
the dock at Haljfax.in May,q,C,1946,
Joan then boarded a train bound
for Winnipeg. She remembers look-
ing out across the vast expanse and
wondering what her life would be
like in this strange andseemingly-
endles knew land.
Something else may have been
gnawing at her as well. Sometimes
when the other young war brides
got off at their stops, there would
be no one there to meet them. Joan
had never even seen Pete in civilian
clothes and wondered if she would
recognize her husband.
But he was there to meet her in
Winnipeg. They traveled to Kanda-
har, Sask where they hoped to
start farming. However, times were
tough and Pete was forced to take a
job in the mines at Inco in Sudbury.
A pregnant Joan followed him
there the following January and she
remembers they had to borrow $50
to have their baby in the hospital.
A second child was ,born in Eng-
land and two more would follow.
The Pedersens spent 38 years in
Sudbury before retiring to East
Wawanosh Township where they
could raise horses.
In spite of her early reservations,
Joan has had a good life in Canada.
All tour of their children went to
university and now have good jobs.
The 'family honored Mr.and Mrs.
Pedersen on the occasion of their
50th wedding anniversary last
month. Joan visits England on a 5 years later. and Pete Pedersen marked
regular basis, but can easily call their 50th wedding anniversary last month at their East Wawa -
Canada home. nosh home.
ItRSP repayment due
WINGHAM — If you borrowed
money from your RRSP to buy a
home prior to March 1, 1994, the
first repayment to your RRSP is
due by the end of February 1996.
Plan now to make at least the
minimum required payment equal
to one -fifteenth of the total money
you borrowed; i.e. if you borrowed
$15,000, your annual repayment is
$1,000. You'll receive a statement
from Revenue canada to this effect.
Repayments don't have to made
to the same RRSP from which the
money was borrowed, but when
you make paybacks, they must be
Turnberry has
no objections
At the meeting of July 4, council
passed a motion that it has no ob-
jections to houses being built by
Bob Ruttan ,on 'his remaining two
lots at Junctionville, providing he
can 'meet required regulations and
set -backs. Also, he must reach an
agreement with the owners of the
nearby New Mills. If any minor
variance is required, Ruttan would
have to agree to apply for the same:
designated as such. Use "Home
Buyers', Plan — RRSP Repayment
Form (form T1037) and consult
your Revenue Canada district of-
fice for further information.
The 'great benefit of the Home
Buyer's Plan is that it allows Cana-
dians to save for a home and retire-
ment at the same time. Make the
most of your investment by paying
back your RRSP on schedule — ei-
ther the amount required or more if
you can manage it. Remember, any
scheduled amount not repaid by the
due date will be added to your an-
nual income and taxed accordingly.
