Forty golfers and numerous cor- porate, business, and individual sponsors combined efforts to raise about $5,000 to fund the establish- ment and operation of the Huron - Bruce chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The next phase in the formation of the chapter will involve the se- lection of a volunteer board of di- rectors and the gaining of a charter from MADD Canada. Organiiers are hoping to have the local chap- ter chartered in the fall. Competing golfers came from. as far away as Maryland, Kitchen- er, Ajax, Buckhorn, Fonthill, Ni- agara Falls, Newmarket, Pickering as well as from the local area. Tournament organizer David Magee began working on the tour-' nament in January. y. Murray Hackett of Fonthill took low gross honors with a round of 78. Brendan Magee of Wingham was runner-up with a 79. Laurie Doolittle of Wingham took low net honors with a 70. Doug Brooks of Maryland was runner-up with a 72. John Cullen had the longest drive on the first tee and Doolittle had the longest drive on number four. George Skinn of Wingham was closest to the pin on the second and seventh green, and Paul Mag- ee of Pickering was closest to the pin on number five. MADD is a North America - wide organization dedicated to, raising public awareness of the problem of drunk driving in the community through education, lobbying the government at all levels for necessary changes in the laws and attitudes, and co- operation with law enforcement agencies. MADD works to have drunk driving recognized as a seri- ous violent crime that it is, and to promote the public's right and re- sponsiblity to protect itself from criminal drunk drivers. Bursary winner...shane Pegg of Wingham was the recipient of the $500 Don Gra- vett and family WOAA bursary for 1995. On the hand for the presentation, made last Wednes- day at the WOAA office in Wingham, were WOAA president David Jacobi, Don Gravett, Shane Pegg, and WOAA bursary committee chairman George King. Jets fall to Blyth in minor soccer play Wingham Jets were handed a 7- 2 setback by Blyth in North Huron Mosquito Soccer League play last • Thursday. Scoring for the Jets were An- drew Laing and Robert Phelan. Andrew Glassier booted a pair of goals on Thursday of lead the. Green Machine to a 3-1 decision over the Red Dogs in the squirt division of Wingham minor soc- cer. Tyler deVos also scored for the Green Machine. Matthew Weber netted the lone goal for the Red Dogs. Ryan Shaw scored three goals last Wednesday evening as the Stingers defeated the Blue Jays 5- 1 in squirt division soccer. Dave Guernick booted a pair of goals ,for the winners. Dennis Proctor scored both goals for the Blue Jays. Bill McGrail scored two goals last Tuesday as Wingham defeated Lucknow 4-0 in atom division play, to improve their record to four wins and a loss. Tim Readman and Shawn Legion Squirts split league contests The Wingham Legion Squirt boys split a pair of league games last week. The Legion Squirts played Wingham Reds last Monday and were handed a 14-8 setback. On Thursday, the Legion Squirts bounced back with a 27-0 decision over Ethel. The Legion Squirts were never in the game last Monday as the Wingham Reds took a 14-0 lead after two innings. The Legion Squirts scored the final eight runs of the game. Kevin Waechter posted the win for the Wingham Reds, and Barry Skinn was tagged with the loss for the Legion squad. The Legion team came ready to play Thursday, and came away with a team -effort victory. - Derek Marks, Pat Rozendal, and Chad Skinn collected three runs apiece with Zack O'Krafka, Gar- rett Skinn, Adam Ryan, Barry Skinn, Nathan MacTavish, Chris Watts, Paul Cardiff, James Need- ham, and Tim Barfoot getting two runs each. O'Krafka earned the decision on the mound as he allowed just one hits, three walks and struck out 10 batters in four innings. Walker also scored for Wingham. Receiving assists were Bridget Da- vies and Laurita McGrail. Wingham played a strong de- fensive game to post the shut out. The Wingham Wings scored three goals, in each half last Tues- day in...Nogb Huron Atom Soccer, League play in Clintbn as they scored a 6-0 decision over the Clinton Caboodle. Playing for the Wings were Fraser Kuyvenhoven, Brittany Campbell, Tyson Glassier, Alicia Bakelaar, Tabitha Lindsay, Pete Mellor, Andrew Glassier,: Eric Camm, Mary Beth Brown, Jeff Maronets, Ashley Kahn, Marita Harrinen, Brennan Chaulk, Brent Martin, Bill Schaefer, Matt Rozen- dal, and John Haines. Tyson Glassier scored the first two Wings goals. The first was as- sisted by Camm and the second unassisted from a Clinton goal kick. • Martin booted the third goal af- ter getting a -pass from Chaulk on an indirect kick. Mellor scored the first two goals in the second half. Tyson Glassier assisted on both markers with Camm 4ielping out on Mel- lor's second goal. Bakelaar netted the sixth Wing - ham goal with Lindsay getting the assist. Mellor and Rozendal shared goaltending duties for the Wings. In bantam division competition last Monday, Wingham . played Blyth to a scoreless draw. Cindy Koch hit the crossbar with a header late in the first half. Devon Chaulk also hit the goal post early in the second half. Both goalkeepers played well, epecially Adam Carr in the Wing - ham goal, who played his first- ever,game at the position, and re- corded the shut out. In a bantam game played June 5, Lucknow scored a 1-0 decision' over Wingham. Darryl Aitchison scored the lone goal of the game. Taylor Mali recorded the shut out in the Lucknow net and John Clugston played in goal for Wing - ham. Wingham Pee Wees show improvement The Wingham Pee Wee boys are playing better every game, and are showing that they are competi- tive in both the WOAA and Tri - County leagues. In WOAA play their 1995 records so far is three wins and four losses. The last game played was June 22 against a strong Chepstow team, with Wingham losing 8-6. Matt, Merkley led the Wingham offence, going 2 -for -2 at the plate with a home run and a single. Steve Carter hit a double and singles were rapped out by Kiel Watts, Trevor Hickey, Curtis Ritchie, and Jeff Leitch. Pitching duties were shared by Matt Snow, Ritchie, and Ryan Wickens. Dan Mullin went the distance for Chepstow. The next home game is Thurs- day 7 p.m. at the Riverside Park, aga:ast Walkerton 1. In Tri -County play, the pee wees have three wins and three losses. The last game was on June 20, and was an impressive 11-2 win over Listowel. The offence was led by the two - hit performances of Wickens — a home run and a triple, Snow with double and single, and Patrick Bailey with a pair of singles. Singles were contributed by Watts, Lucas Carson, John Hius- ser, and Mark Bailey. Strong pitching by Kyle Ander- son and Wickens clinched the win. They allowed four hits and six walks and combined for five strike outs. The Pee )Wees play Seaforth at 6:30 p.m. on July 4 at the Jose- phine Street ballpark. The Pee Wees captured the sil- ver medal in the Walkerton tour- nament, played June 17-18. The team won two games before losing to Walkerton I in the champion- ship game. MADD Huron -Bruce will edu- cate using visits to schools, indus- trial safety' programs, maintaining a high community profile, and multi -media presentations to raise awareness of the dangers associat- ed with the combining of alcohol with the eipt ration of motor vehi- cles of any knid. MADD Huron -Bruce will pro- vide support to •the victims of drunk drivers in co-operation with 'HADD Waterloo -Wellington until members have sufficient training in this area. This is one of the most important services in the af- termath of the destruction caused by drunk driving, MADD Huron -Bruce has re- ceived great support from the Wingham community and beyond, in making this first fund-raiser a success. Other communities in Hu- ron -Bruce are encouraged to fol- low suit. With a strong organiza- tion and a strong position MAD® Huron -Bruce can make the chang- es needed to save lives. HORSESHOES Saturday, June 24 'A' category Don Frook of Elmwood and Keith Lovell of Exeter took first place in the double round 50 -point game 'A' category of the horseshoes tourna- ment held at the Wingham Sports- men Club on Saturday. They had four wins and were +85. Roy Bean of Listowel and Bill McAstocker of Goderich were sec- ond with four wins and +83. Harold Carter of Goderich and Eric Hewitt of Kindarine were third with two wins and +110. Jim Nelson of Walkerton and Paul McKee of Belgrave were fourth with one win and +160. 'B' category Jim Bolton of Walkerton and Bill Anger of Winghan were first in the double round 40 -point game 'B' cate- gory with four wins and +74. Doug Vanderwoude and Dan Sta- cey of Wingham were second with three wins and +78.. Wilf Towns of Kincardine and Peter DeGroot of Goderich were third with three wins and +53. Lorne Hamilton and Terry Anger of Wingham were fourth with two wins and +106. The next horseshoes tournament will be Aug. 12, beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 22 `A' category Harold Carter and Jim Nelson were' first in the double round .40 point game of horseshoes competi- tion played last Thursday. They had six wins. Jack Arnold and Hank Carter were second with three wins and +80. Paul McKee and Eric Hewitt were third with two wins and +112.
