raises $1,400 for kids
The weather was not co-
operating on Saturday, but RAM
(Regional Area Motorcyclists) still
managed to raise $1,400 for the
Easter Seal Kids.
Twenty riders from throughout
midwestern and central Ontario
braved the threat of rain and wet
highways to take part in RAM's
second annual poker run on Sun-
day.
Registrations took place from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverside Park
in Wingham, and after completing
an approximately 160 -km course,
ended up at the Wingham Snow-'
mobile Club for a barbecue, games
for the children and, a social eve-
ning.
Ride co-ordinator Corey Vrm-
ington said the ride was successful
despite the weather.
She noted that half of the mon-
ey raised will go to the Easter Seal
Kids and the other half will go to
the Lions Club of Wingham.
Gord Kaster of Wroxeter col-
lected the most pledges with $204.
Karl Schack of Paisley was the
rider from the greatest distance.
WROXETER--On a nice spring
evening, members of the United
Church Women were welcomed by
Shirley Hatt as they gathered at her
home for the May meeting.
Mildred, Coupland and Phyllis
McMichael chose "Mother" as the
theme for` the worship. Scripture
verses about mothers, the hymn
"When Mothers of Salem" and a
poem about mothers were used by
Mrs. Coupland and Mrs. McMi-
chael. Mrs. Coupland received and
dedicated the offering. 0)
Mrs. McMichael read stories
about mothers and the magic of
mothers. She said "mom" is some-
one who knew how to heal with a
kiss, quiet fears with a hug and a
story, clean up a muddy child and
answer endless questions. Each
new mother seems to get "Mother's
Magic" soon after.. the birth of her
child and solves the mystery "How
Do Mothers Get Mothers' Magic".
Mrs. McMichael introduced Pau-
line Richards of Fordwich, a long-
time member of the agricultural so-
ciety, demonstrator and judge of
flower arrangements and growth of
flowers. It was interesting to watch
her snip stems and tuck blossoms
and greens into an odd dish and
make it look beautiful.
She spoke on the picking and
care of cut flowers and greens, how
to decide what to use to ,suit the
place and occasion. God creates the
beautiful flowers and they can ex-
press many wonderful thoughts
when we share them with others.
The ladies expressed their thanks
to Mrs. Richards and a gift was pre-
sented for her interesting lesson on
nature.
Sandra Edgar welcomed all the
ladies and thanked Mrs. McMi-
chael and Mrs. Coupland for their
part in the meeting.
Eileen Hamilton read the min-
utes of the last meeting. The roll
call, the name of a community or
city which starts with the first letter
of your name proved interesting.
Joy Wylie gave the treasurer's re-
port. It was decided to use the
funds collected from the mystery
gift and birthday pennies to be do-
nated to the Children's Telethon.
The mystery gift was brought by
Dorothy McGee and won by Mrs.
Richards. The members were re-
minded of the visit to the Fordwich
Nursing Home on June 17 at 2 p.m.
and are asked to bring goodies.
The last meeting of the season
will be held at the home of Mrs.
Edgar on June 27 at 6 p.m. for the
smorgasbord supper on the patio.
The ladies are asked to bring some-
thing for the food table, a lawn
chair, a warm sweater and a friend
to share the evening.
The Mizpah Benediction closed
the meeting and a social time with
tea and goodies was enjoyel by all.
Roger Wormington of Wingham
had the best poker hand and Craig
Kennedy of London had the sec-
ond best poker hand.
RAM has two more upcoming
events. The motorcycle associa-°
tion will have itS 'Meet the Kids'
event at Wood Eden Camp in Lon-
don in August, and the club's Toy
Ride will be held in September.
During the 'Meet the Kids'
event, children at the camp will
get to ride on the back of the mo-
torcycles.
