scheduled for July 15
A Co-ed Volleyball Tournament
will be a featured event in Wing -
ham during the annual sidewalk
sale days.
On July 15, co-ed teams will tip
the ball in the Josephine Street
Park, beginning at approximately
10:00 a.m.
Recreation Co-ordinator Cheryl
Underwood said the Rec. depart-
ment and the Wingham Retail
Committee, the organizers of the
event, are hoping to have 16 teams
entered in the event. A maximum
of 32 spots are available in the tour-
nament.
Each team is guaranteed two
games, with a double knock -out
rule in effect. Each team must have
at least three men and three women
on the court during play, and a ros-
ter is limited to 10 players.
Cost for the event per team is
$60. Registration forms are availa-
ble at the Wingham Recreation De-
partment in the Town Hall, or at
Locker Room Sports on Josephine
Street. Deadline for entries is July
5.
Underwood said the tournament
will be divided into three catego-
ries: 19 -years -old and under, 20-29
years, 30 years plus.
Prizes will be available for the
winning teams and consolation fi-
nalists.
Colts play in
Mitchell
The Wingham Colts of the
Bluewater Fastball League played
three games in the Mitchell tour-
nament on the weekend, and man-
aged a single victory.
The Colts went up against
Shakespeare on Friday and. were
handed a 12-6 setback.
Bill Haines started on the
mound for the Colts, lasting three
innings before being relieved by
Jason Daw. They allowed 13 hits
and one walk and combined for
six strike outs.
Catcher Ben Blackwell was 2-
for- at the plate for the Colts.
Thifd base player Scott Neil and
shortstop .Jason Goodall each had
one hit in two at -bats.
In the Colts second game of the
tourney, they fell 9-4 to Camla-
chie.
Tom McDonald was tagged
with the loss as he lasted six in-
nings before being relieved by
Scott Neil.. They gave up 10 hits
and tix!o ;walk; and recorded' five

Centre fielder Ryan Deyell and
second base player Andrew Gib-
son were each 1 -for -2 at the plate.
First base player Steve Bourne had
one hit in three plate appearances.
The Colts rallied in the seventh
inning in their final game of the
tourney to score a 4-3 decision
over Ayr Vics.
Relief pitcher Daw was the hero
for the Colts as he drove in two
runs in the seventh inning, with a
double, to overcome a 3-2 deficit.
Third base player Kyle Wheeler
began the comeback with a solo
home run.
Neil started on the mound for
the Colts with Daw taking over in
the seventh. They allowed six hits
and three walks and combined for
nine strike outs.
Wheeler was 2 -for -3 at the plate
and Deyell had two hits in four at -
bats. Daw was 1 -for -4 at the plate
and first base player Corey McKee
had one hit -in three plate appear-
ances.
Steelhawks, Stingers
come up short.
The Intermediate Steelhawks
and the Belmore Stingers came up
short in Bluewater Fastball League
play last week.
Playing in Wroxeter on Sunday,
the Steelhawks were handed a 7-1
setback by the Clifford 4 Aces.
Jeff Saltburn .was tagged with
the defeat, on the mound for the
Steelhawks. Brett Reading was the.
winning hurler for the 4 Aces.
The Steelhawks play the Wing -
ham Colts in Belmore on Friday
begining at 8:30 p.m. and then
travel to Southampton on Monday
for a 9 p.m. contest against the
Lakeshore Heat.
The Stingers took on the Chep-
stow Aces in Belmore on Friday
and were handed a 6-2 setback in
six innings.
Jeff Fischer suffered the loss on
the mound for the Stingers, with
Pete Spitzig posting the win for
Chepstow.
Pee Wees
outlast
Blyth
Belgrave Pee Wees outlasted
Blyth 11-8 on May 15 in Bel -
grave's first game of the season.
In a return contest in Blyth on
May 17, Blyth scored an 8-3 deci-
sion.
In the , game played May 15,
Robbie McGee clubbed a home
run in the first inning, and Ric Bu-
chanan also scored. Scoring in the
third inning were Peter Irwin, Jim
McCracken, Kevin Hopf and
McGee.
Jonathan •" Cucksey and Gavin
Van Camp scored on a hit by Jus-
tin Howatt.
Scoring in the fifth inning for
Belgrave were McGee, Ryan Fear,
and Tim Robinson.
McGee was the winning pitcher
as he struck out 10.
In Blyth on May 17, Belgrave
scored all three runs in the sixth
inning. Irwin hit a home run and
Hopf and McGee also scored. •
Blyth scored twice in the first,
third and fifth innings, and put sin-
gle runs across the plate in the see-
ond and fifth innings.
Tom Lang clubbed a three -run
home run for the Aces.
In a game played in Clifford last
Tuesday, the Stingers were handed
a 6-5 setback in 10 innings. The
Stingers game against the Colts
Sunday afternoon in Wingham
was postponed because the Colts
were in a tournament.

Club travelled Co Waterloo on
May 27 to compete in a track and
field meet hosted by the Young
Athletics of Kitchener.

Juveniles lose to Exeter
in exhibition contest
The Belgrave Jueveniles fell 6-2
to the Exeter Juniors in exhibition
softball play on Sunday at the
Kinsmen Park ballfield in Bel -
grave.
Exeter held a 6-0 lead after five
innings. Belgrave rallied with a
pair of suns in the sixth, but were
unable to get any closer.
Steve Cook picked up the win
on the mound for Exeter, lasting
the first five innings. The two Ex-
eter hurlers allowed six hits and
two walks and combined for five
strike outs.
Jason Kieffer started for Bel -
grave on the mound and went five
innings before being r>ilieved by
Brent Robinson. They gave up
nine hits and recorded eight strike
outs. -
Third base player had a triple
and single in three at -bats for Bel -
grave, and Kieffer., rapped out a
pair of singles in three plate ap-
pearances.
Second base player Robinson
had a triple in- three at -bats, and
right fielder Mike Greig had a
double in three plate appearances.
Seven Optimists nominated
to Ontario track team
Seven members of the Wing -
ham Optimist Track and Field
Club have been nominated to com-
pete in a track and field meet in
Laval, Quebec during the Canada
Day weekend.
The seven will be part of a 60 -
member contingent representing
the Ontario Minor Track Associa-
tion.
Selection to the Ontario team
was based on individual perfor-
mances during 1994 and 1995.
Representing the Wingham Op-
timist Track and Field Club will
be Trina Daw in the 150 metres,
1,000 metres, and the shot put;
Krysten Gerth in the 60 metres,
and the shot put; Sjaan Gerth in
the 100 metre hurdles, 2,000 me-
tres, and the high jump; Audrae
Dickson in the 60 metre hurdles,
long jump, high jump, and the re-
lay; Nigel Black in the 150 metres,
and the 1,000 metres; David Lisle
in the 80 metre hurdles and the
shot put; and Janet Lisle in the
shot put, discus, 60 metre hurdles,
and the 250 metre hurdles.

Shortstop Brent Robinson
rapped out three singles to drive in
three runs on Sunday, as the Bel -
grave Midgets downed hometown
Desboro 5-3 in WOAA Midget
Fastball League play.
Joel Pegg went the distance on
the mound for Belgrave to post the
decision. He allowed nine hits and
three walks and fanned four.
Second base, player Eric An-
drew had three singles in four at -
bats. First base player Dan Gusso
and left fielder Jamie McCallum
each had a pair of singles in four
plate appearances.
Todd Edgar had a double while
Shawn Fair collected two singles
and was hit by a pitch twice.
• In a game played last WedneS-
day in Belgrave, the Midgets out-
lasted Desboro 12-8.
Robinson went the distance on
the mound and allowed seven hits
and five walks while striking out
10 to post the win.
Catcher Fair clubbed a three -run
home run in the sixth inning to

a run -scoring triple in the first in-
ning.
Gusso and right fielder Edgar
each had a double and single in

Eric Andrew had a double while
Arley Pautler and McCallum each
had a single.

were first in the double round 30 -
point game of horseshoes competi-
tion pl ayed at the Wingham Sports-
men Club ori Thursday. They had
nine wins and were +12.
Paul McKee and Jim Bolton were

.Arnold and Bob Gavreluk were third
with five wins and +96. Al MacKen-
zie and Dan Stacgy were fourth with
five wins and +94.
