ONEZ 1995 Going to England.—Tatum Mathers, 17, of Blue - vale, gratefully accepts a donation of $500 from Terry Anger representing the Wingham Optimist Club. Tatum heads to Eng- land on a six-week student exchange this week. Studying abroad A 17 -year-old Bluevale girl has left for England for a six-week study exchange arranged by the Washington -based Youth for Un- derstanding organization. Taturn Mathers, daughter of Ken and Pat Mathers, will be staying at Emley, England, located 50 miles east of Liverpool, with a family consisting of two teenaged girls who live with their father. A student at Central Huron Sec- ondary School at Clinton, Tatum learned about the program, through the high school guidance office. She decided it would be a great op- portunity to spend some time study- ing abroad and applied last fall. She learned in mid-October of last yearr, that she had been accepted into the program and then started a vigor- ous fundraising catlnpaign to fi- nance her stay. Tatum's mother Pat estimates that it will cost approximately $4,000 to send the girl to England. Much of that money Tatum has raised herself through the sale of crafts and her parents have helped. Also greatly appreciated are dona- tions from two local groups: $500 from the •Wingham Optimist Club and $25 from the Bluevale Wom- •en's Institute. Seniors Day Tatum said she will, be going to school during her six-week stay in England, but she also will have the opportunity to tour the country. A history buff, Tatum is looking for- ward to learning about the rich his- tory of that country. The Advance - Times hopes to catch up with Ta- tum when she returns and hear about her summer experience. Comrnon sense has .. heidground in court Dear Editor: For once, I believe common sense has held its ground in Su- preme Court..I am referring to the ruling made that Child Support paid by one spouse is tax deducta- ble and taxable in the' hand of the receiving spouse. This case has cost the taxpayers of the country, thousands of dollars when it should't have even been started. The reason is as follows: the supporting spouse is in the higher tax bracket, thus any deduction in taxes owing by that spouse im- proves the ability to pay the sup- port. The receiving spouse with the deduction for "Equivalent to Married", pays far less tax than the paying spouse and thus has more net proceeds. The original judge in qty opin- ion, should havethrown the case out at the beginning and instructed the person to sue for more support. Barry W.
