ington. Is a "family farm" one that
employs over 200. people? Obvi-
ously not. .
1 don't know who is behind the
ORQ's big money ad campaign,
but let's take a look at what farm
groups are saying about Bill 91.
Ontario Federation of Agriculture
president Roger George and Cecil
Bradley, director of policy and re-
search for thetItFA appeared before
the Standing Committee on Finance
and economic Affairs on February
13, 1995.
Tony Hendriks,
Ashfield Twp.
In response to a question from a
Progressive Conservative MPP re-
garding whether the OFA favoured
the repeal of Bi11 91, Mr. Bradley,
speaking for Mr. George, replied
"No". Mr. Bradley went on to say
that "the legislation goes a long
way towards recognizing the
unique situation of agriculture." He
also commented that he thought
"people are prepared to work with-
in the legislative framework that is
there."
Another prominent farm leader
from the fruit and vegetable sector,
Hector Delanghe had this to say
about Bill 91. "I still say its not
practical for unions to organize
farms because there's no money in
it for -them'. (Farm and Country,
May 9, 1995) In the April 1995 edi-
tion of Earthkeeping, the Christian
Farmers Federation of Ontario de-
scribed Bill 91 as "appropriate to
the unique characteristics of agri-
cultural enterprises."
Let me add my own thoughts to
this. Does any -farmer out there
really believe that their son or
daughter or aunt or brother is going
to sign a union card and organize a
union on the family farm? Obvious-
ly not.
As MPP for. Huron County, 'I am
proud to call myself a farmer And a
New Democrat. Working with El-
mer Buchanan and Premier Bob
Rae, I have spent the past four and
a half years serving my constitu-
ents, cutting red tape and solving
people's problems. I have been
working on programs like Farm -
PLUS, the Commodity Loan Pro-
gram, the Feeder Cattle Loan Pro-
gram, new safety net programs, the
ethanol industry and supporting ru-
ral communities and farmers.
Let's end the misinformation and
political grandstanding about Bill
91. It's not about unionizing the
family farm and people who say it
is aren't telling you the truth..

Family farin unionization 'not practical'
Dear Editor:
1 am writing regarding a radio
and billboard campaign sponsored
by a Toronto-based group known
as "Ontarians for' Responsible Gov-
ernment" (ORG). This big money
ad campaign says that the Rae gov-
ernment is promoting the "unioni-
zation" of the family farm. This
type of statement has been repeated
by both PC leader Mike Hams and
Liberal leader Lyn McLeod.
The Rae government is not inter-
ested in the "unionization" of the
family farm. A few facts would be
helpful here. The Agriculture Labor
Relations Act or • "pill 91" was
passed on June 23, 1994. The legis-
lation was the product .of extensive
consultation and work with numer-
ous farm groups. The legislation
clearly outlaws strikes and clearly
recognizes the unique nature of ag-
riculture. To date, there has been
one certification under the legisla-
tion: a mushroom farm which em -
How much will it cos
Dear Editor
Just how much is Bill C-68 go-
ing to cost?
The government is still claiming
they can register every gun in Can-
ada (their estimate of three mil-
lion), for $85 million. The Justice
Department and Allan Rock have
steadfastly resisted giving a de-
tailed account of this estimate even
to their own MPs. In our view, this
figure is absolute fantasy for the
following reasons:.
1. A recent report on the current
registration system put the costto
produce one certificate at between
$86 and $104 depending on the
province. So let's. make it simple
and take an average cost of $90
multiplied by Mr. Rock's incorrect
estimate of seven million guns
equals$630 million. Add to this the
cost of registering three million gun
owners at the same cost ($90) and
we come up with an additional
$270 million for a grand total of
$900 million. If we take the more
realistic figures of seven million
owners and 20 million guns, the
figure balloons to $2.43 million.
2. The Ontario government is
changing our health cards and driv-
ers licenses to a photo card similar
to the FPC and registration cards
mandated in C-68: The cost just to
produce : the card itself is $13.68.
Multiply that 'cost by the govern-
ment's figures of three million
owners and seven million guns and
we have $136.8 million, just for the
cards. This does not include the ap-
plication, investigations, computer
time and equipment. This cost
again increases when you use the
more accurate number of guns • and
' owners (27 million by $13.68) to
$369.36 million.
3. Metro Toronto Police estimat it
takes up to six hours to investig
and issue one FAC form. This
amounts to approximately $180
each. Even cutting this figure in
half, due to the extra vigilance To-
ronto Police put into their investi-
gations, we come up with the $90
figure we used in the first example.
In any case, the government's
$85 million figure is pure fantasy,
designed to placate the finance
minister and a populace, both very
concerned with the increasing cost
of government.

Reform
Dear Editor:
Since March 1991, 1 have been
supportive of the policies of the
Federal Reform Party, particularly
those policies relating to deficit and
debt reduction. With the provincial
election set for June 8, 1995, I have
had to .consider which provincial
party has the policies which 1 can
support.
There has been some discussion
about a possible Reform movement
in Ontario. You may have seen in
the London Fre Press last week
(Ed. Note: Also Advance -Times,
May 17), the article relating to "Re-
form" candidates in Ontario. The
Federal Reform Association is not
fielding, supporting, endorsing or
even encouraging any candidates to
run in the Ontario .provincial elec-
