chief executive • officer Lloyd
Koch clarified the laying off of
three nurses at the hospital.
He said that nurses do not work
one in three weekends. He noted
that they are scheduled, as re-
quired by the ONA contract, to
work three out of six weekends.
"This has been the scheduling
practice for several years, but the
difference with the contract is that
a penalty premium of time and a
half must be paid if more than two
consecutive weekends are
worked," said Koch.
He said the primary objective of
the layoff was to reduce the num-

In a more informal setting than •
usual for . all -candidate debates,
three of the five election hopefuls
for Huron County fielded questions
on law enforcement and conserva-
tion issues.
The most notable stand taken
was that by the three main party
candidates —. New Democrat incum-
bent Paul Klopp, Liberal John Je-
witt and Progressive Conservative
Helen Johns — on the hollow -point
bullets for police officers.
Hollow point bullets have raised
'a great.deaiocontroversy, mainly...
from those outside of law enforce-
ment, because of the extent of dam-
age they inflict on a shooting vic-
tim. Police agencies have requested
the use bf these bullets partly due
to the fact that many armed crimi-
nals are now carrying more fire-
power than law enforcement offi-
cers. Just last year the Ontario
Labor Board approved new side-
arms for law enforcement person-
nel after they determined the previ-
ous sidearms were dramatically
outdated.
Jewitt said his personal view was
that he would not like to see bullets
that would inflict more damage
than what is necessary.
"It seems inhumane to me to in-
flict more damage than what is re-
quired. I don't believe I could sup-
port hollow point bullets," he said.
Johns said under a PC govern-
ment, law enforcement agencies
would be granted use of such bullet
types. She quoted from a news re-
lease her party, stating a Mike Har-
ris Conservative government would
ber of full-time positions in order
to increase the flexibility available
with more part-time nurses and de-
crease the number of times two
nurses had to be scheduled to do
the work of one nurse, particularly
as the hospital enters a period of
reduced patients and the planned
temporary closure of Team A.

Criminals pilfer favorite toy
from Highland Drive hone
Dear Editor:
During the nighttime hours of May 24/25. someone re-
moved a Little Tykes basketball set from the front lawn of
424 Highland Drive.
I had purchased the set two years ago for my young son
and daughter, who are now three and six years old, confident
that they would have many years of enjoyment playing with
it. It was popular with many of the neighborhood kids and
was used daily.
To the person(s) who stole this pleasure away from my
kids, i ask — How could you be so cruel? Not only did you
steal an expensive toy, but you also hurt two little kids.
The frustrating part is that, as a single parent striving to
raise four children, I do not have the resources to "make it
better".
It's sad that my kids have had to learn at such a tender age
that the bad guys win and there isn't much anyone cares to
do about it.
I know that this "petty theft" is insignificant compared to
other crimes. However, it matters to Greg and Janine who no
longer have one of their favorite games to play.
