A chapter of WRED (Wome
Rural Economic Development)
been formed in Huron County
met last week at Wingham for
first time.
A group of 15 women, all
business now or interested in start-
ing a business, met over dinner to
discuss their successes and failures
and compare strategies. They come
from a varied background -- a truck
driver, an auctioneer, home sales
consultants, a registered nurse --
but have a common goal in mind: a
successful and productive business
career.
As the marketplace has grown
more competitive, many people,
women in particular, have turned to
alternative ways to put their talents
to use. The result is a groundswell
of activity in the area of home busi-
nesses, many started in the past five
years.
The advantages of operating a
home business are many. Overhead
costs are kept to a minimum, as are
child care costs, if there are young
children at home. Technological
advances in the area of personal
computers and facsimile machines
have made it easier to operate a
business from a home office.
However, spending a good deal
of time at home alone can make
one feel isolated, which is why
WRED networks are springing up
across the province. The regional
coordinators of WRED for Huron
County are Pamela Stanley and
Diane Dietz. Stanley is the owner-
operator of a small bookkeeping
service, as well as the teacher of a
night school adult education course
on bookkeeping fundamentals at
Conestoga College.
N Dietz owns and operates a home-
care service, as well as sells a wa-
ter-based line of cosmetic.
mall The bi-monthly WRED dinners
c re- provide members a chance to "net -
more work", the definition of which is,
sses "the forming of business contacts
en. through informal, social meetings".
n in At last week's meeting, members
has had a chance to bring others up toe
and date on what is new in their line of
the business.
Fran McQuail of West Wawa -
nosh updated the group on the com-
munity gardbn she and her husband
Tony hope to start this summer.
Chris Dickson of Belmore; owner
of Goodies By Two Shoes, a dis-
tributor of bread mixes, jams and
pickles, introduced Barb Alton of
Wingham, a home consultant for
'Please, Mom", a Vancouver -based
lothing company for children.
Jean Peesker is a registered nurse
who has gone into independent
ractice, specalizing in health edu-
ation, research, program planning
nd proposal writing. Pat Bernard,
wner of a Walton -area bookkeep-
g and computer -training business,
nnounced dates for this summer's
Computer Camps" for children.
