HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Wingham Advance Times, 1995-04-26, Page 5111001111Y, APRIL 21, 1995 Goerninent regulation concerning .name change ridiculous Dear Editor: I wish to draw your readers' at- tentions to a government regulation passed in 1988 concerning chang- ing one's name. The bill states that when one legally changes one's name, all previous names are de- clared null and void. This includes your father's surname on your birth certificate. When a woman marries, she accepts her husbands name. Apparently this is not a "legal" name. Marrying does not affect her birth certificate which retains her birth name. Last year, when I learned of my ex-husband's remarriage, I decided to reverse my name to that of my first husband and my children. I ap- plied to the Registry Office of On- tario to have this done. In doing so, I was required to send certain docu- mentation to prove my identity, one item being my birth certificate with my birth name. When certification' of the names change came, so also came a new birth certificate bearing my first husbands name. My fa- ther's name, Wardell, was gone! My birth name was gone!" Because of an irresponsible Ontario law, I never existed as Wanita Wardell. Thinking there had been an error, I contacted the Registry Office by letter and by telephone and was told about the Change of Names Act. After receiving two more birth certificates with my husband's name, I could see my efforts at the Registry Office were in vain. 1 therefore went to thetop and wrote to the Premier, himself. I got a prompt reply by telephone, fol- lowed by •a letter to say the natter would be looked into. To date there has been nothing done. Can you imagine the resulting confusion? I had to apply for a new Health Card and that required my birth • certificate. Loaded with enough documents (except my birth certificate) to have allowed .me into the secret service, I headed for the Ministry of Health in Owen Sound: They knew nothing of the Change of Names act, soundly ridiculed it and accepted a photocopy of my original birth certificate. Then I had to apply for a• new Social Insurance Card which also required my birth certificate. It was processed at the Unemployment Office where they also knew nothing of • the Act, found it absolutely unreasonable and used the same photocopy of my original birth certificate. Senior cit- izen cards met the same fate. None of the above cards have been re- ceived after four months. • So at present, my wallet is de- void of all official documents, that is, except for my 'Zeller's Club -Z card; but then they don't ask for your birth certificate. Is there a solution? Yes. Get the act amended! concerned citizens, especially women's groups should he voicing their objections to the government. No nape change should be retroactive! No woman should have to give up her birth name (which in reality is an impos- sibility) because she wants to take a different name. I consider this Act 'an infringement on my rights as a female citizen of Ontario and 1 would hope that all women of On- tariowould view it likewise. How does the Government of Ontario safeguard society against criminals' usage of name -change? It is not in the interest of society that those government records be retained? In the meantime, do not under any circumstances let anyone have your birth certificate. When a re- quest is made for it, get a certified photocopy of it at a bank, or if that is not accepted, get one at a notary public's or at a lawyer's. Aviod the hassle before it begins. Well, it's election time again. How, shall 1 vote? The Liberals brought in the Change of Names Act; the N.D.P.'s are supporting it; and the Tories...? Maybe there'll be an Independent running! Wanita Hollands (Fletcher) (nee Wardell) Loss can be prevented Dear Editor: It was with sadness that I read the front page of The Sun Times from Owen Sound dated Wednes- day, April 12, 1995 the article deal- ing with the fire that destroyed the Greenock Township's municipal office and garage. Reeve Roland Anstett is quoted as saying "All the history of the Township of Greenock has been lost in this devastating fire," he said. "All our history book materi- al, everything way back into the 1800's has been lost." Yes, the original records have been°lost but thanks to a township clerk back in 1958 permission was given and . ril °° was taken of the Minutes of the Wlunicipal Council 1859-1899 and Assessment Rolls from 1881-1899. The originals of these microfilms are stored in Salt Lake. City, and the township was given a copy. Now, thanks to a township council that was interest- ed in sharing genealogical informa- tion pertaining to their township with those who live around the world, they can receive another copy of these records. These records were originally filmed to help those looking for ge- nealogy but in this case the Genea- logical Society of Utah can help the Greenock Township office which has Lost everything in this devastat- ing fire. This is a good example of how everyone wins when genealog- ical information is made available to and through the genealogical So- ciety of Utah. Have your records in the munici- pality in which you live, or the church which you attend, been filmed in case of a fire or arc per- manently misplaced'' These records are microfilmed at no cost to the said organization. Thanks for your time and consid- eration. Let me assure you that we are alive and well. Although the Reg- istered Nusing program is being phased out, other health care pro- grams currently being offered in - elude Registered Practical Nurse, Health Care Aide/ Personal support Worker, and Home Support Work- er. These programs vary from four to eighteen months in length, are affordable, and provide excellent employment opportunities upon completion. They are designed to meet the changing needs of the health care system in Ontario. Carolyn McPherson Horwwto be a Local Hero 4nnrv,., don't havero;ook vein farwfnd lots of oak.
