s
On Saturday, April 22', from 10
a.m. to 12 noon, visitors will be
welcome to explore some of the
mysteries of a flour mill built in
1856.
How did those first settlers of
Gorrie use the river to power the
machinery used to grind wheat
into flour? Who crafted the wood-
en stool that still sits in a corner?
Why are there so many square
holes in the floor?
Gorrie Was once so prosperous
as many as 60 teams of oxen could
be counted on the main street. In
the 1860s, all the villages in How -
ick Township were centres of
business and social activity. Could
renovating the old mill in Gorrie,
possibly as a museum, be the start
of increased prosperity for the en-
tire Howick,community?
For several months, a group of
Howick ,residents have been ex-
ploring this ,possibility with the
Maitland Valley Conservation Au
-
thorny, owners of the Gorrie Con-
servation Area in which the mill is
,located.
ReStOrille ,thee: 'mals is just one
idea. To give everyone the chance
to share, ideas and opinions, a pub-
lic meeting will be held on Tues-
day, April 25, at the Howick Cen-
tral School starting at 7:30 p.m.
There are many changes in the
world today which impact on
communities. The "Friends of the
Gorrie Mill" are asking how peo-
ple can adapt to those changes in a
positive way and use them to work
for their benefit
"The year 2000 is fast ap-
proaching,"
p-proaching," states Linda Henhoef-
fer of RR 1, Gorrie, on behalf of
the group. "We need to be plan-
ning now to secure a future for
ourselves and our children."
The group invites residents of
Howick and others to join them at
the old mill in Gorrie on Saturday,
April 22, to explore their past and
imagine a part of their future. ,
"Then come share your ideas at
the public meeting on Tuesday,
April 25. Play a part in the pros-
perity of our community. Together
we can make good things happen,"
Ms. Henhoeffer urges.
