meets
B>,LGRAVE--The evening unit of
the United Church Women met at
the home of Jane Grasby earlier
this month. There were 20 mem-
bers answering the roll call with an
Easter memory.
Muriel Coultes welcomed every-
one and thanked Mrs. Grasby for
the use of her home. Annie Cook
was in charge of the worship ser-
vice. Scripture verses from Genesis
were read by Ruth Johnston and
verses from Matthew by Annie
Cook.
Hymns, "For the Beauty of the
Earth" and "When I Survey the
Wondrous Cross", were sung. Bar-
bara Anderson read a meditation on
environment. Annie Cook closed
the worship service with prayer.
Mrs. Coultes conducted the busi-
ness. Wilma Higgins reported on
the "Spring Event" held at Sea -
forth. It was announced the May
meeting will be held at the home of
Louise Bosman.
Mrs. Bosman introdueed the
guest speaker, Mrs. Leona Arm
strong of Brussels, who is the
Reeve. of Grey Township. She gave
an interesting talk on her experienc-
es in Local government. Mrs. Bos-
man thanked her and meeting
closed with benediction before
lunch was served.
Lyle and Shirley Hart, accompa-
nied by Mrs. Eileen Marks, spent
the ,weekend with Adrien and
Elaine Poirier and the latter re-
mained for a longer visit.
Mrs. Pauline Dickson accompa-
nied Joe and Delores Kerr and fam-
ily of Jamestown to their cottage at
Point Clark last Sunday.
Doug and Marsha Hart and fami-
ly of Bowmanville spent a few days
recently with Bill and Shirley Hart.
Wellington and Isobel Marks of
Blyth visited with Mrs. Hazel Grif-
fith last Sunday.
Peter Isabelle of Mississauga is
spending a few days at his home
here.
Bill and Shirley Hart spent a
couple of days with Dale and Lisa
Hart and family of London.

STRUDWIICK--My darling sister,
Gwendolyn Strudwick, second
Mother, beloved friend and soul -
mate to Muriel Alcorn, Gorrie,
passed away suddenly on Feb. 15,
1995, at Portsmouth, England.
No more letters or phone calls
but,
You are with the best.
And I was truly blest,
To have had your love for so
many years.
But who is here, beside me now,
To wipe away the tears.
My only consolation, you are
with your beloved Brud.

SWANSON--At Wingham and
District Hospital on Good Friday,
April 14, 1995, Mrs. Louise Swan-
son of Wingham passed away in
her 85th year.
The former Avis Louise Laundy,
she was the beloved wife of the late
Morris Swanson, who predeceased
her in 1993.
She was the dear mother of Glo-
ria and Jack Laing of Southampton,
Pauline and Gord Cerson of Tees -
water and Karen and Graham Nel-
son of Waterloo. Mrs. Swanson
also will be 'missed by her sister,
Dora Ney of Chatham and sister-in-
law Agnes Steward of London.
There are 10 grandchildren surviv-
, ing and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by sisters
Gladys, May, Mary and Ada and
brothel's Grant and Ward, as well as
one granddaughter.
Visitation was held at the
McBumey Funeral Home in Wing -
ham on Saturday, April 15, from 7
to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4
and 7 to 9 p.m. As Mrs. Swanson
was a past Worthy Matron of Hu-
ron Chapter No. 89 of the Order of
Eastern. Star, a memorial service
was held in the funeral home on
Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral service for the Louise
Swanson was held at the funeral
home on Monday, April 17, at 1:30
p.m. Rev. Linda Hill officiated. In-
terment in Wingham Cemetery.
Carrying Mrs. Swanson to her fi-
nal resting place were pallbearers
Kent Cerson, Keith Cassidy, Brian
Bain, Jim Laing, Lee Nelson and
Drew Nelson. Floral tributes were
carried by Candy Cassidy, Sherri
Cerson, Melissa Nelson and Lou
Mackan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial do-
nations to Wingham and District
Hospital would be appreciated as
expressions of sympathy.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Taylor spent a
week with Dr. Ron Taylor of St.
John's, Nfld. They enjoyed a good
visit, as well as attending three
hockey matches of the. St. John's
Maple Leafs, winning all of them.
Mrs. Sarah Anderson recently
spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs.
Wilfred Schreiber of Milton. They
brought Mrs. Anderson home_earli-
er this month and attended the deli-
cious pancake supper at the Bel -
grave United Church.
Weekend guests at the home of
Mrs. Beth Procter were her sister
and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Conrad Smithson of Downsview.
Mrs. Maxine Zettler of RR 4, Wal-
kerton, visited recently with her
mother, Mrs. Procter. .
On Sunday, April 9, Mr. and
Mrs. Harvey Edgar, Mrs. Irlma Ed-
gar, Mrs. Winnifred Johnston, Mrs.
Nancy Daer and Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Hakkers attended the funeral ser-
vice at the York Chapel in Islington
of their cousin, Ruth Lockridge.
Recently, Mrs. Thelma Pletch
was a weekend guest at the home
of Joe and Ruth Ann Russell of
Guelph.
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Pengelly
have returned home from a winter
stay in Arizona.
Mrs. Agnes Walker of Maple
Grove Lodge, Goderich, passed
away very suddenly earlier this
month. She was the dear sister of
Lewis Stonehous of Belgrave. Sin-
cere sympathy is extended from
friends and neighbors. May your
thoughts and prayers be with then?.
Ashley Irwin of Ashfield Town-
ship spent the weekend with her
grandmother, Mrs. Betty Irwin.
Congratulations from friends and
neighbors to Jim and Irene Lamont
on the occasion of their 40th wed-
ding anniversary. The Lamonts vis-
ited recently for a few days with
Rev. and Mrs. Peter Tucker at Elli-
ott Lake. They attended the Holy
Trinity United Church service on
the Sunday. The trip was how Mr.
and Mrs. Lamont chose to celebrate
their wedding anniversary.
On Wednesday, April 12, "Ma-
bel's Moms" met at the home of
Mabel Wheeler. Attending were:
Andrea Stevenson, Mathew and
Tyler; Joanne Robinson, Nicole
and Stephanie; Sherri Taylor and
Brandon; Linda Hess and Andrew;
Annette teRaa, Janette and Mitcp-
ell; Donna Raynard, Trevor and
Heidi and Melanie Pletch, Meagan
-and Ben. Rev. Mary Jane Hobden
also was in attendance. The topic
centred around current events. At
the conclusion, Mrs. Wheeler •
served refreshments.
Vince Makas, Alicia and her
friend, Meagan Grover of London,
visited on the weekend with Mrs.
Mabel Wheeler.
"Rejoibe and Blossom" will be
the theme of the annual meeting of
the Hamilton -London Synodical of
the Women's Missionary society
(WD) of the Presbyterian Church in
Canada.
The meeting will take place in
the Drummond Hill Presbyterian
Chalmers
WMS meet
Whitechurch --The Chalmers
Presbyterian Women's Missionary
Society held the April meeting last
Tuesday, April 11, at the home of
Kathleen Elliott. Dessert was
served prior to the meeting at 2
p.m.
Mrs. Vera Falconer and Mrs.
Milligan were the leaders for the
Easter meeting which followed the
Glad Tidings. Norma Rintoul gave
two readings and Janet Cook fol-
lowed with a prayer.
Mrs. Elliott presided for the busi-
ness and the correspondence was
discussed. Mrs. Rintoul read the
minutes and the roll call was an-
swered with hymn containing the
word "cross". Mildred Purdon gave
the offertory prayer and Eileen
Moffatt closed the meeting with
prayer.
The next meeting is May 17 at
Mrs. Neilson's.

Rev. and Mrs. Clarence McClen-
aghan of Kincardine, Mr. and Mrs.
Ted McClenaghan and Mr. and
Mrs. Ron Finlay of Kitchener were
supper guests last Sunday with Mil-
dred McClenaghan to celebrate
Clarence's birthday.
David Mundell of Hamilton vis-
ited last Saturday with Alvin and
Marion Mundell and they all at-
tended the Belmore Maple Syrup
Festival.
Stuart and Eletta Aitken of Kin-
cardine spent the weekend with
Bob and Margaret Ferguson. Ada
Aitchison and Ruth Sewers of
Wingharrl visited last Saturday eve-
ning at the same home.
Stephen Hull of Wroxeter visited
over the weekend with his great-
grandparents, Bill and Janet Hogg.
Ron and Barbara Bennett have
returned home after holidaying for
two weeks at Ocho Rios in Jamai-
ca.
Les and Susan Stephenson, Brad-
ley and Scott of RR 1, Ethel and
Gordon and Joyce Mann of RR 2,
Wroxeter, were dinner guests of
Mrs. Velma Mann last Sunday.
Mrs. Dave McGregor of Hensall
and Mrs. Archie Hetherington of
Exeter were recent guests of Mrs.
Greta Bennett. Mrs. Evelyn Gal-
braith, RR 3, Wingham, visited last
Sunday afternoon at the same
home.
A number attended the Belmore
Maple Syrup Festival last Saturday.
Don and Yvonne Gedcke, RR 1,
Gowanstown, Jean Sparling of Pal-
merston and Bernice Ceasar were
guests of Ed and Wanda Roth last
Sunday to celebrate Mrs. Sparling's
birthday.
Allan and May Hyndman spent
the weekend at the home of Brian
and Karen MacTavish, Hanover.
Earl and Diane Mino, Jim and
Marion Schefter, Ken and Shirley
Miller and Tim and Tracey Cousins
of Kitchener have returned home
from holidaying in Ocho Rios, Ja-
maica. While there they enjoyed a
cruise on the Regent Star to Costa
Rica, the Panama Canal and Carta-
hegene, Colombia.

Women
BELGRAVE--The afternoon" unit
of the United Church Women met
April 10 in the Sunday School
room with 10 members present.
Mrs. Audrey Fenton opened the
meeting by reading an Easter poem.
Mrs. Edith Vincent was in charge
of the worship and carried on with -
the Easter theme.
Mrs..Ida Procter led the Bible
study from Matthew, Chapter 10.
Mrs. Kay Roberts presented the
mission study, telling how Church-
es are trying to protect the land on
the island of Bohol in the Philip-
pines. It is being ravaged by Japa-
nese -affiliated corporations, Mrs.
Roberts reported. She said the
Churches also are trying to restore
bushland by planting seedlings.
The meeting closed with the
Apostles Creed said in unison.
