'Stangs look stronger in sophmore season
The Madill Mustangs girls soc-
cer team finally took to the field
last week for a pair of home
games.
The Mustangs were scheduled
to open the regular season on
April 6 in Goderich against the Vi-
kings, but the game was postponed
because of snow. The game will
now be played Monday.
The first game, played last
Tuesday afternoon, had the .Mus-
tangs post its first win of the sea-
son, a 1-0 decision over the Sea-
forth Golden Bears.
On Thursday afternoon, playing
against a strong South Huron Pan-
thers, league semi-finalists last
season, the Mustangs were hand-
ed a 1-0 setback.
After a scoreless first half on
Thursday, the Panthers' Heather
Davies booted a high shot that was
just out of the reach of Madill
goalkeeper Julie Kikkert, and just
under the crossbar, that gave
South Huron a 1-0 lead. The goal,
was scored 21 minutes into the
second half.
That was all the scoring in the
game. However, the Mustangs
never gave up, and came close to
getting the equalizer late in the
second half.
Kikkert played a strong game in
goal for the Mustangs, stopping
two point-blank shots in the first
half and keeping the fleet -footed

(Thursday, April 13)
'A' Division
Jim Nelson of Walkerton and
Wayne Woods of Chesley were first
in the single round 50 -point game 'A'
division of horsshoes competition
last Thursday at the Wingham
Sportsmen Club. They had three
wins and were +45. Don Fronk of
Elmwood and Hank, Carter of'Wing-
ham were second with three wins
and +17.
Harold Carter of Goderich and
Eric Hewittof Kincardine were third
with two wins and +94. Wayne
Sachs of Hanover and Al MacKen-
zie of Point Clark' were were fourth
with two wins and +87. Skip Rogers
of Walkerton and Paul McKee of
Wingham were fifth with zero wins
and +137.
'B' Division
John Schaus of Formosa and Bob
Burr of Kincardine were first in the
single round 35 -point game 'B' divi-
sion with four wins and +59. Jim
Bolton of Chesley and Ralph Koop-
man of Goderich were second with
four wins and +32.
Harvey Bolton of Walkerton and
Eugene Kuntz of Hanover were third
with three wins and +69. Wilf
Townes of Kincardine and• Glen
Casemore of Wingham were fourth
with three wins and +69. Don Carter
of Wingham and and Harold Maize
of Goderich were fifth with three
wins and +65.
Jo -Ann Woods of Chesley and
Doug Vanderwoude of Wingham
were sixth with two wins and +107.
Lynn Hewitt of Kincardine and Pete
DeGroot of Goderich were seventh
with two wins and +71.

Panthers at bay.
Shelly Johnston took over from
Kikkert in the second half, when
coach Carolyn Schofield moved
Kikkert to the forward position,
because of her Speed. Kikkert used
her speed to the team's advantage
as she created a couple of good
scoring chances, but the Mustangs
were unable to score the tying
marker" ,
Kikkert and Johnston played a
strong game in goal for the Mus-
tangs last Tuesday afternoon,
against, Seaforth.
Kikkert also netted the team's
only goal, 10 minutes into the sec-
ond half. The Mustangs played
against the wind in the first half,
and used to wind at their backs to
their advantage in the second half,
to produce the lone goal of the
game.
Coach Schofield said all lines
played well in the game.
The girls were in Clinton yester-
day afternoon for a game against
the Central Huron Redmen. After
travelling to Goderich on April 24,
the girls play at home on Tuesday
and then travel to Seaforth on
April 27.
_• The junior and senior boys open
the season today by travelling to
Goderich to play the Vikings.
They travel to Clinton on Monday
and then play their home opener
next Wednesday.
On the pitch...The Madill girls soccer team took the pitch last week for a pair of
home games. The girls downed Seaforth 1-0 on Tuesday, and dropped a 1-0 decision to South
Huron on Thursday.
Belgrave hockey teams
enjoys year-end banquet
BELGRAVE--The Belgrave hock-
ey team enjoyed a potluck dinner at
the community centre on Sunday,
April 9. Cathy Walker asked the
blessing.
BELGRAVE SHOOT
The Belgrave Seniors enjoyed
enjoyed a bounteous potluck dinner
on April 7 at the Belgrave Commu-
nity Centre.
Following the potluck, they were
entertained with a shoot party with
11. tables in play: Tice• high lady
was Norma Moore, second high,
Helen Martin and most shoots,
Myrtle Pengelly. Barbara Anderson
was the low lady.
George Inglis was high man and
John King, second high. Doris Mi-
chie had the most shoots and Au-
drie Vath was low man, with both
ladies playing as men. Lucky draws
were won by Lillian Appleby, Lois
Chamney, Gordon Pengelly and
Ross. Anderson.
BELGRAVE EUCHRE
There were seven tables of eu-
chre in play last Wednesday at the
Women's Institute Hall.
Olive Bolt was the high lady and
Margaret King, second high.
Edythe Coultes had the most lone
hands and Lois Chamney was low
lady. Mabel Wheeler, playing as a
man, was high man and Ross Tay-
lor was second high. Harvey Edgar
had the most lone hands and
George Carter was low man.
The next Belgrave euchre is to-
night, April 19. All are welcome.
Cam Procter, as head of sports,
was Chairman for the occasion. He
expressed thanks for the children's
enthusiasm in getting to know all
about hockey and also to the par-
ents for getting the youngsters to
the games and practices on time.
The Novice .and Tyke teams re-
ceived trophies, while the Atoms
received hats, medallions and a
book made up of players, games
and statistics. These were presented
and purchased by the coaches and
managers.
The coaches and managers were
each presented with gifts as tokens
of appreciation. The sponsors of the
tournaments each received plaques
as "certificates of appreciation" and
• dude the Belgrave Co -Op, John
ixon, Kevin Pletch, Brian Potter,
Doug Walker and John Campbell.
