Dear Editor:
I have sat and read and re -read
an article printed in your paper en-
titled "Police Procedure Abhoring;
is nothing officers can do?"
I felt it needed an affirmative
and constructive reply and there-
fore time was needed to attempt to
compose such a draft. My heart
goes out to the families and vic-
tims of this type of violence. I too
have fears for my children and
wish to protect them from injury.
For many of us, choosing to live in
a small town, with its close-knit
atmosphere seemed an ideal set-
ting. Little by little, though, com-
munity involvement seems to be
withering away.
We cannot expect the safety of
our community to be the sole re-
sponsibility of our police ,depart-
ment anymore than 'we 'would
agree to turn the responsibility of
educating our children over totally
to the school system. We too, as
parents and community, have a vi-
tal role to play.. It hardly seems
likely that we need fear a "police
state" occurring here, but to coin
an old adage "if you aren't part of
• the solution,' then your're part of
the problem." We as parents know
our children, we know their faults
and weaknesses, as much as we
recognize their good merits:
"Tough Love" is something that
we have all had to engage in from
time to time. If we wish our chil-
dren to have a true sense of com-
munity and justice we must send
an example as parents and com-
munity by backing our words to
them with, appropriate actions. We
watch in horror as suburban com-
munities in the U.S. battle drugs
and 'gang problems in their neigh-
borhoods.
g
borhoods. Many citizens have lit-
erally had to "take back their com-
munities" with solid actions.
Granted, these are extreme cases,
but they all had small beginnings.
Are we destined to live in fear of
retribution and therefore, at the ex-
treme, become prisoners in our
own homes?
I urge our community to be-
come involved. Let the authorities
know if you see something occur-
ring that you know is wrong. Our
community and its authorities
must encourage and protect the
rights of individuals to act for the
betterment of the town and thus
ensure more desirable behavior
and less undesirable behavior.
I also respond to Mrs. Case-
more's letter and say "Yes, I will
keep eyes open in defence of your
child, and I too appreciate your
doing the sante for mine."

where I have left off. Just let your
editor know if you would like to
see letters on morals and ethics
coming. I hope to apply my skills
and use the talent God has given to
me again in Oxford County.
Our children and friends there
were finally successful in luring us
back, so we will feel most wel-
come. We will visit back here at
times, and perhaps I will write the
odd letter. In the mean time if you
feel like giving me a hard time, or
would like to discus's old times, you
will be most welcome at 265 Tunis
St., Ingersoll.
The kindness of those that have
been good to me will never be for-
gotten, and please keep my slogan
alive and do the best you can with
what God has given. I hope the new
owners will keep up our lawn sign
which says, "Love, The Basis Of
All Things Good".

forward. Let's focus on what we
can accomplish rather than look
back at what might have been.
We genuinely appreciated the
time and effort that Wescast and
the council put into trying to make
this project a reality. We genuinely
feel that this council is sincerely in-
terested in trying to do their best
for the community.
The good news is that Wescast
still feels that Wingham is a good
community to invest in. Their de-
velopment plans are impressive and
a boost to community pride and op-
timism for the future.
