Looking at prosperity and growth in Wingham
Project seeps to define potential development areas in community
In 1993, the Wingham and Area
Chamber of Commerce Was in-
volved in the sponsorship of a
small business seminar. The semi-
nar was attended by over 140 local
people interested in developing
their own business.
Unfortunately little information
was available on potential business
opportunities in the Wingham ser-
vice area.
The Chamber of Commerce and
the Wingham Economic Develop-
ment Committee are now involved
in reaching out to local entrepren-
eurs by undertaking a business op-
portunities project to address poten-
tial development areas.
The organizers of the Communi-
ty Commerce Opportunities feel
that there is potential to locally pro-
duce some of the goods and servic-
es that presently are imported from
outside Wingham's service area.
The more locally produced goods
and services, the more self-reliant
Wingham's economy will be.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Community
Commerce Opportunities project is
two -fold: to identify goods and ser-
vices that could be provided locally
e
that are- currently imported from
outside Wingham's service area;
and, to`determine the feasibility of
replacing some of the imported
goods and services in the Wingham
area.
Several regional organizations
joining the partnership of the
Chamber and WEDC are the Huron
Business Centre, the North Huron
EDC, F.E. Madill Secondary
School and the Advance -Times.
The project will begin in mid-April
and by the end of Octo-
her. .
Several phases will be completed
in the overall project. The initial
phase will involve the_ identification
of imported goods and services.
This phase will be used to identify
potential goods and services that •
could be producedlocally. Ideas
Will be collected from the commu-
nity at large through a Community
Commerce Opportunities Contest.
The contest will be promoted
-through the Advance -Times for
four weeks, beginning mid-April.
In addition, a co-ordinator will
be retained to contact the major '
commercial, industrial and institu-

tional services in the Wingham ser-
vice area.
These services will be asked to
identify goods and services that
they need and . they feel could be.
produced locally. A steering corn=
mittee will be established to help
identify those goods and services
that have the greatest potential to
be produced locally.
Phase 1 is expected to be corn-
pleted by May 31. .
The second phase will be the pre-
liminary economic feasibility as-
sessment, This will be -used to de-
termine the market potential and.
feasibility of producing the goods
and services identified in Phase 1.
The results of this preliminary
assessment will be summarized in' a
report and presented at a public for-
um.. This should be completed by.
the end of August.
Phase 3 will be the Small Busi-
ness Seminar. This seminar will be
presented in October for interested
entrepreneurs. The focus will he the
results of the- business opportunities
project to participants.
The total project is estimated at '
$19,350. The Chamber has applied
to jobsOntario for $8,300 for a
