Keeping Wingham online and in touch with the world
The high tech world ofS.O.S.
The Wingham Advance -Times
online is just the latest development
at Steffen Open Systems in Wing -
ham.
The computer sales and network
service has been growing by leaps
and bounds with the current wave
of Internet hype and computeriza-
tion of society.
In addition to the sales aspect of
the locally -owned and operated
business, S.O.S. is also one way for
computer buffs to access the world-
wide web of Internet.
Pete McDonnell of S.O.S. said
the most popular package at the
business js the Personal Internet
Service plan. Using either an Inter-
net access software package, or a
regular terminal program, people in
the area can gain full access to the
'Ne't'. ?without paying long distance
charges. Somewhere in the• Wing -
ham file can be found articles from
the local newspaper, the Blyth Fes-
tival and the Drayton Festival
news.
Personal Internet Service at
S.O.S. runs for $25 per month. Un-
like other computer networks, there
are no hourly charges or hidden
fees.
McDonnell said the service pro -
r
vides the user with access to thou-
sands of newsgroups, e-mail, the
World -Wide -Web, Gopher, Internet
Relay Chat and much more.
Businesses can also gain access
through S.O.S for a corporate fee
that includes a static IP address,
and huron.net domain name.
Non-profit groups receive a 10
per cent discount when they con-
nect to the S.O.S. service.
The other aspect of S.O.S. ser-
vice is Wingham Online. This BBS
system is accessible by modem or
by the Internet. People can telecon-
ference with others from around
Huron County and the world. Pri-
vate e-mail can be sent to other on-
line members.
McDonnell said shareware and
freeware files are available in the
local library for instant download-
ing. With the Ganle Connector,
several popular games can be.
played "with others – including
DOOM.
With Wingham Online, users can
explore other BBS services, Chat-
ting Systems and Multi-user Dun-
geon (MUD) games.
There is even a Shopping Mall
online with area businesses listed
and products and services available
to the user.
Access to Wingham Online is
metered by credits, which are pur-
chased at the rate of one credit per
one cent. Purchases made at S.O.S.
will get the buyer a 10 per cent pre-
tax total added to their BBS ac-
count in credits.
In terms of the latest systems,
McDonnell said S.O.S. primarily
deals with IBM products.
The showpiece right now is the
NexGen 586 system with eVac
hardware virus control. The system
was highly rated by the Royal Ca-
nadian Mounted Police Security
Evaluation and Inspection Team in
a November 1994 government doc-
ument.
, McDonnell said the NexGen is
IBM's competition for Intel's pqpu-
lar Pentium system.
S.O.S. offers consumers every-
thing from the most basic 386 sys-
tem to software. The current wave
of popularity is towards Multi-
media systems, which are available
at S.O.S.
McDonnell also pointed out that
hardware such as RAM upgrading,
mouse, hard drives and several soft-
ware packages are available for
current computer owners.

For close to 45 years, people of
Wingham and area have been go-
ing to John McInnes for their dry
cleaning requirements.
Wingham Drive -In Cleaners has
been providing dry cleaning servic-
es for the people of Wingham for
over 30 years.
McInnes has been associated
with the dry cleaning business for
44 years. In 1963, he started on his
own when he bought Temple -
man's, located where Mac's Milk is
now situated.
He was at that location for over
a year, before moving to the
present location on Dragonal Road
— which was a garage at the time.
He closed up the Templman build-
ing and sold the property.
About five years ago, McInnes
was bought out by his children —
son Bruce, and two daughters,
Corey Wormington and Heather
Harris.
.Corey and Bruce worked at the
business after school, so they
'evolved' into the business. Heather
