The Hurricanes placed seventh out of the 10 teams competing. Competing clubs were from To- ronto, Owen Sound, Sarnia, Col- lingwood, Halton Hills, Stratford, St. Thomas, Camp Borden, and the Hurricanes. Kevin Schill was second in the 100 metre backstroke with a time of 1:14.49 minutes; second in the 100 metre butterfly with a person- al best time of 1:17.93 minutes; second in the 100 metre freestyle with a personal best time of 1:05.67 minutes; and fifth in the 50 metre freestyle in 30.54 sec- onds. Lesley Burton, was second in the 200 metre butterfly with a per- sonal best time of 3:10.60 min- utes; second in the 100 metre but- terfly with a personal best time of 1:22.25 minutes; third in the 200 metre backstroke with a personal best time of 2:57.85 minutes; fourth in the 200 metre individual medley with a personal best time of 2:28.20 minutes; and eighth in the 100 metre breaststroke with a time of 1:38.96 minutes. Karen Schill was sixth in the 100 metre butterfly with a person- al best time of 1:27.30 minutes; and sixth in the. 200 metre free- style relay. Karen Schill and Burton filled out the team for the open 200 me- tre medlay relay that swam to a fifth place finish. All participants received an en- graved plaque, with first through sixth place finishers receiving en- graved plates for their plaque. Six games needed The WOAA Novice 'A" consola- tion final between Wingham 'Bar- ry's Esso and Seaforth required six games. Playing at the . Lockridge Me- morial Arena last Friday, Wing - ham scored a 4-1 to tie the series at five points each. The sixth and deciding game was played Saturday afternoon in Seaforth. The home team skated to a 5-1 victory to claim the title. The Barry's Esso coaches would like to congratulate the players on an excellent year of hockey and thank the parents and sponsor for their co-operation and support. Hawks defeat Orangeville The Wingham Hawks geared up for the Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA) provincial championship with an exhibition victory over Orangeville on Fri- day. Tracey Palinski scored the only goal of the first period for Wing - ham as the Hawks went on to score a 6-3 decision. Jenni Camp- bell assisted on the goal. The Hawks held a 3-2 lead after the second period and outscored Howick HOWICK-A young pair of skaters who specialize in dance routines captivated a capacity au- dience at the Howick Figure Skat- ing Club's presentation, "The En- chanted Forest." Guest skaters Barb Hammell of Belmore, who skates with the Brussles Figure Skating Club, and Jeff Wills, her dance partner from Toronto, performed three dance numbers at the skating carnival held at the. Howick Community Centre on March 25. • • The young skaters have per- formed at` the Canadian nationals and judging from their skating at Howick, will be a dance pair to watch in future competition. The entire presentation by the Howick club delighted the audi- ence. Troy Dosman was the midget team's top scorer with 35 goals and 50 assists. He was also the most dedicated player and shared the most sportsminded player award with Shawn Stewart. Aaron Harding and Matthew Anon were co -winners of the most improved player and David. Greig was the re- cipient of the best plus/minus award with a +52. Kyle Wilson was the most im- proved player on the bantam team with Leonard Feldskov the most sportsminded, and Dave Johnson the most dedicated player. Pettigrew resigns as coach • When the 1995-96 Western Jun- ior 'C' Hockey League begins its tram camp sessions in, August, the Brussels Bulls will be under the direction of a new mentor. The Bulls executive accepted Scott Pettigrew's resignation at a meeting held March 23. Pettigrew coached the team for the past two years, this year guiding the team to the league finals. He has been involved with the Junior 'C club for the past five year's; four as head coach. He noted that he has enjoyed his five years with the Bulls, but it is time to give someone else a shot at coaching the team. The players and club have worked hard the past two years to .be competitive, this year losing out to Mount For- est Patriots in the. league champi- onship. Pettigrew said coaching, even at the Junior 'C level, is becoming a year-round job. He said that as soon as the hockey is over, a coach is scouting players for ;the following season. He added that he will still be coaching summer hockey - until the end pf June = in Waterloo. • Pettigrew said he has enjoyed working with Geoff Ward, now the coach of the Kitchener Rang - With the numberof players. the Bulls are losing from this year's team, Pettigrew said it could be a couple of years before they are strong. He said Mike Henry and Char- lie Smith were good assistants, and now they will be able to have • a Larger role in the running of the. team. Pettigrew said that he had -no in- tentions of moving up to coach at the Junior 'B' level. Anyone interested in coaching the 'Bulls during the 1995-9r. sea- son, they should contact manager Ken Ball at 881-3765 or president Gerry Wheeler at 887-6233 by April 15. The Bulls' awards banquet will be held Friday, April 28. Madill- athletes earn 10 medals Julie Lisle earns silver in women's open pentathlon Twelve members of the F.E. Madill Secondary Schools track and field team competed in the York University indoor invitational meet in Toronto on the weekend. Over 2,000 high school athletes from throughout Ontario took part in two days of intense competition. The Madill athletes captured a total of 10 medals - two gold, four silver and four bronze. They also shattered four existing school records. Julie Lisle took the silver medal in the women's open pentathlon, a five -event competition in which she was edged out of the gold by last year's Canadian junior heptathlon champion Francis Seeley. During th'e pentathlon, Lisle broke existing school records in the 60 -metre hurdles and the shot put. She then 'Competed in the women's open pole vault and the long jump to earn two more silver medals. Mary Lisle came home with the only gold medals won by the team. She won the junior girls long jump with a leap of 4.90 metres and the junior girls shot put with a toss of 11.26 metres. Mike Nolan was a silver medalist in the midget boys shot put with a personal best throw of 13.64 metres. There was also some exciting competition in the senior boys shot put and some excellent results when Dave McDonaldshattered the existing school record set be Peter Snow in 1970, by over two metres with a throw of 16,06 metres. The other three bronze medals were captured in jumping events: one by Adam Schiestel in midget boys high jump with a personal best of 1.73 metres, another by Jason McDonald in junior boys pole vault by clearing the bar at 3.50 metres, and the last one by Heather Askes in the senior girls high jump with a height of 1..50 metres.
