Goderich edged Kincardine 4-3
in the championship game of the
WOAA Intermediate women's
hockey tournament held at the
Lockridge Memorial Arena in
Wingham on Saturday.
Goderich led 2-1 after the first
period, but trailed 3-2 going into
the final period. Two goals in the
final minute of play, gave Gode-
rich the win and the WOAA cham-
pionship.
Owen Sound needed overtime
to win the consolation title with a
5-4 decision over Elma-Logan.
In the championship game,
Jackie Fisher scored for Goderich
with 53 seconds remaining in reg-
ulation to even the score at three.
With 33 seconds remaining in the
game, Sarah McDade scored her
second marker of the contest'to lift
Goderich to the 4-3 win. Tara Hes-
sel alsoscored for Goderich.
Hayley Sangster tallied a pair of
goals for Kincardine with Jesse
Thompson netting a single, Jill
Shewfelt collected a pair of as-
sists.
After a scoreless first period in
Woodley, Carly Quennell, and Lauren Pautler.

defeat Milverton in exhibition
The Wingham Intermediate
girls hockey team played aggres-
sively from the opening face off
on March 18 as they defeated Mil-
verton 6-1 in an exhibition game,
played at the Lockridge Memorial
Arena.
Wingham took a 3-0 lead in the
first period on goals by Lindsay
deVos from Heidi •'Meier, Lauren
Pautler from Meier, and Pautler
from Carly Quennell.
Meier scored the only goal of
the secondperiod, with help from
Quennell, to give Wingham a 4-0
lead going into the third period.
Goals by Meier and Lisa Black
gave the Intermediates..a 6-0 lead.
Cindy Freiburger helped out on
Meier's second 'goal; and Tabitha
Lindsayµ'and Wailer assisted on
the consolation final, Elma-Logan
took a 2-0 lead in the first period.
Owen Sound tied the score early
in the third period, with Elma-
Logan coming back to take a two.

came to tie the game, netting the
tying marker with just nine sec-
onds remaining in regulation time,
to send the game into overtime.
Riehelle McMann tallied three
goals for Owen Sound with Lind -
thy Wood getting a goal and an as-
sist and Christy Dale Johnson tal-
lied one goal.
Kelly Ann Ward scored all four
goals for Elma-Logan.
In the opening game of the tour-
nament, Lucknow scored a 3-1 de-
cision over Wingham. Erin Meri-
an, Jackie Freeman and Mary
Andrew scored for Lucknow.
Lauren Pautler was the lone
goal getter for Wingham with Ta-
bitha Lindsay and Bethany Lind-
say earning assists.
Goderich downed Elma-Logan
4-0 in a first round contest, and
Kincardine shut out Honeywood
6-0. Kincardine then defeated

Hawks advance to OW
Wingham Hawks advanced to
the Ontario Women's Hockey As-
sociation (OWHA) provincial
championship in Mississauga be-
ginning April 7.
The Hawks gained the berth in
the provincial championship last
Monday, when they defeated Lon-
don Devilettes 3-0 in the fourth
game of the regional playdowns.
The Hawks won the four -point se-
ries, 5-3.
Coach Dan Campbell was very
proud of the team's effort last
Monday in London.
"We had three lines, and each
line produced a goal," he said. "It
was a total team effort.",
The coach said the players were
still emotionally charged up from
winning the WOAA senior wom-
en's championship the weekend
before. That was demonstrated in
the third game of the OWHA re-
gional series, played last Sunday
in Wingham. The Hawks scored a
5-1 decision to even the four -point

last Monday's contest, Tracey Pa-
linski gave the Hawks a ,1-0 lead,
with Jenni Campbell earning the

of five WOAA consolation final
series.
Wingham took the opening
game of the series, 3-2, played last
Tuesday in Seaforth.
In Friday's contest, played at the
Lockridge Memorial Arena in
Wingham, Seaforth took a 2-1 win
in overtime to even the series at
one game each.
The two teams played to a 3-3
overtime tie on Saturday to keep
the series deadlocked.
Game four in the series was
played last night in Seaforth.
Game five will be played in Wing -
ham on Friday, beginning at 6:30
p.m.

Jill Van Dam tallied an empty
net marker in the third period to
clinch the victory for the Hawks.
Cindy Freiburger recorded the
shut out in the Wingham net.
Belgrave Atoms competed in
the Lucknow. .tournament on
March 18 and split the two games
they played.
Chad Cook scored four goals,
and was named most valuable
player, in the team's first game0s'
they downed Mitchell 7-3.
Justin Campbell had a goal and
an assist, with single markers
scored by Ken McCracken and
Garrett Knight. Travis Hopper
picked up three assists and Jim
Wray earned a pair of helpers.
Belgrave held a 1-0 lead after
the first/period with Mitchell tying
the game in the second period.
Belgrave outscored Mitchell 6-2 in
the final period to post the victory.

Mount Forest in its second game,
Schill and Burton swim
to five medals in Sarnia
Kevin Schill and Lesley Burton
of the Huron Hurricanes Aquatic
Club swam to five medals at the
regional short course meet held
March 25-26 in Sarnia.
Swimmers from clubs in Wood-
stock, Stratford, Tillsonburg,
Windsor, Chatham, Port Elgin
competed in the two-day event
hosted by the Bluewater Otters
Swim Club of Sarnia.
Schill won a gold in the 13 -14 -
year -older' boys 200 -metre back-
stroke and in the 100=metre back-
stroke. He won the silver in the
100 -metre butterfly. The Wing -
ham swimmer won the bronze in
the 100 -metre freestyle and in the
50 -metre freestyle.
Lesley Burton also picked up
five medals, two, golds, a silver
and two bronze, swimming in the
11 -12 -year-old girls division. She
won the golds in the 200 -metre in-
dividual medley and in the 100 -
metre butterfly. She earned a sil-
ver in the 200 -metre backstroke,
and won bronze in the I00 -metre
backstroke, and was a member of
the bronze -medal winning 13 -14 -
year -old girls medley relay team.
The Wingham swimmer also
placed fifth in the 200 -metre
breaststroke, the 100 -metre breast-
stroke, and in the 50 -metre free-
style.

placed fifth in the girls open 200 -
metre •freestyle, and in the 100 -
metre butterfly.

Mount Forest outscored Belgrave

Campbell scored two goals for
Belgrave with McCracken adding

goaltending in a losing cause.
Owen Sound 5-2 to advance to the
final.
Goderich scored a 7-1 decision
over Lucknow to reach the chain-
pionship final.
° Elma-Logan scored a 4-1 deci-
sion over the Wingham Intermedi-
ates in one consolation semi-final
and Owen Sound defeated Honey -
wood 10-3 to advance to the final.
Elrna-Logan held a 1-0 lead af-
ter, the first period against Wing -
ham and were in front 3-1 after
two periods of play.
Faye Davidson had two goals.

Amber Smith. Kelly Ann Ward re-
ceived a pair of assists.

wins title
The Ron Knight rink defeated
the Aart deVos foursome 9-8 in
and extra end to win the Tuesday
Competitive Curling League
championship for 1994-95.
Members of the Knight rink in-
cluded Bruce Skillen, Ray Walker,

The deVos foursome were in
first place throughout the regular
season competition.
