Deer
hunt
results
The Wingham Area Office of
the Ministry of Natural Resources
(MNR) has released the results of
the controlled deer hunts in Wild-
life Management Units (WMU).85
(Huron County and Minto Town-
ship) and WMU 86 (Perth
County).
The results' are .based results
from the mandatory reports re-
turned by hunters who participated
in the shotgun hunts from Nov. to
11 in WMU '85 and from Dec. 5
to 9 in WMU 86. The results do
not include those deer harvested
by archers.
In WMU 85, there were 2,337
controlled deer hunt tags issued
with a harvest resulting in 916
deer. This translates into a 39 per
cent rate.
There were 749 tags issued in
WMU 86 with a harvest 265 deer
or a 35 per cent success rate. '
Mike Malhiot, area biologist
stated that both counties are 'sup-
porting a healthy number of deer.
A controlled hunt is a useful tool
in maintaining a stable deer herd
while attempting to balance con-
cerns about crop damage and vehi-
cle collisions. Although forest
cover in Perth County is quite low
— about nine per cent of the land
area — the county still supports a
population in the neighborhood of
2,500 deer. In Huron County
where forest cover is significantly
greater — 17 per cent of the land
area — the deer population is esti-
mated to be about 9,000 animals.
