XX Optimist Atom A's thump Durham The Wingham Optimist Atom As scored a 6-2 decision last Thursday to sweep past Durham in their best three of five OMHA CC' playdown series. The second game of the series was played last Wednesday in Durham, with the Optimist Atoms posting an 8-4 victory. Wingham outscored Durham 24-10 in the three games of the se- ries. The Optimist Atoms play the winner of the Mitchell-Seaforth series in the next round of the OMHA playdowns. Wingham captain Jamie Chester started the offence last Thursday with a blast from the point, with help from Kent Readman and Kent McPherson. Garrett Skinn made the score 2-0 with help from Jarred Riley. Mau Dinning scored a pair of goals and Zack O'Krafka added one in the middle period before Durham's Andy Aitken beat Wing - ham goalie Zane Davies to make the score 5-1 after two periods of play. Durham's Pat Madill scored in the third, and then Skinn netted his second of the game with help from • Pat Rozendal and O'Krafka. Readman finished the game with a pair of.assists. Skinn opened the scoring last Wednesday with help from 'Din- ning. Aitken scored,for Durham to end the first period even at one. Wingham was caught napping early in the second period as Dur- ham took a 4-1 Icad on goals by Bob Wilson, Eric Hopkins and Aitken. Goaltender Scott Stapleton closed the door from that point in the game. Goals by O'Krafka from Craig Marks and Chester, and by Skinn from Rozendal, put the Op- timist Atoms down 4-3 going into the final period. Wingham erupted for five unan- swered thltd period goals to post. the 8-4 win. Chester began the on- slaught with an end-to-end rush to tic the game. Getting the next four goals wcre O'Krafka from Rozendal and Skinn, Curtis Knight from Jake Henderson, Skinn from Dinning and Rozendal, and McPherson from Marks. Mustang hockey shutout by Badmen on road trip WOSSA champs...The Madill junior boys cross-country ski team captured the WOSSA gold medal last Tuesday at Duntroon. Team members include Dennis Lubbers, Jason Pritchard, Mike Puddy, Aaron Barrie, and Jeff Osinga. Missing are Jamie Good, Rodney Ireland, and Rob Hill. Madill captures overall titles Junior boys cross-country ski team wins gold medal The Madill cross-country ski teams captured the overall girls and boys titles at the WOSSA championship held last Tuesday at Duntroon. The junior boys team took the gold medal with 56 points while the senior boys team were third with 79.3 points, for the overall title. The junior girls team was second with 61.5 points•and the senior girls team was also runner-up with 56 points, and wcre the overall girls champions. Walkerton 9:00 p.m. Midget The Vikings captured the county championship with a 5.1-45 decision over the Mustangs to ad- vance to the WOSSA champion- ships set for Tillsonburg, March 3- 4. Three teams -will represents Hu- ron -Perth at the WOSSA tourna- ment. The Vikings will play the top team in Perth County to deter- mine ranking, while the Mustangs are in Stratford today to play the Central' Rams to determine the third team from Huron -Perth. The Mustangs and Vikings were deadlocked at 24-24 at halftime, and Madill was even up by six to eight points in the second half, but coach Chris Coulthard said they were unable to maintain the lead. "We were 11 for 23 from the foul line," said Coulthard. "That was the difference in the game." Pat McGlynn hooped 15 points Midget Mustangs ousted Madill midget Mustangs were handed a pair defeats at the Huron County midget boys basketball tournament held Thursday at South Huron Secondary School in Exeter. Thc Mustangs played South Hu- ron Panthers in their first game and were handed a 36-34 setback. Shawn Pettaplacc was top shooter for Madill with eight points. Cory Bragg added seven points and B.J. Prince hooped six points. Bragg scored 14 points in Ma - dill's second contest, but it was not enough as the Mustangs fell 43-40 to the Seaforth Golden Bears. Adam Lawrence contributed seven points and Conrad Wem- ham added six points for the mid- get Mustangs. The Madill Mustangs hockey squad travelled •to Clinton last Tuesday to conclude the regular season of the Huron Perth High School Hockey League. Even though the Mustangs were handed a 4-0•setback by the Cen- tral Huron Redmen, it wasn't until Friday afternoon that Madill knew if they were in the playoffs. Central Huron had one game re- maining in the regular season - a Friday afternoon contest against Central Huron. A win or tie by the Redmen would put the Mustangs in the playoffs, while a St. Marys victory would eliminate Madill from post season competition. A win by Central Huron would give them first place in the standings, 'land a first round playoff series against the Mustangs. Thc Mustangs trailed 1-0 after the first period and were down 3-0 after two periods of play. Scoring for the Redman were Ray Bier - ling, Brian Watson and Mark Cooper with the final two. IDA Atom B's post pair of victories in WOAA Wingham IDA Atom Bs posted a ...pair of wins in WOAA local league play earlier this month. On Feb. 5, the Atom Bs jumped into a 3-0 first period lead as they skated to a 5-1 decision over the Normanby Rockets in a game played in Ayton. Wingham held a 5-1 advantage after two periods of play. There was no scoring in the third period. Derek Marks had three goals for Wingham with Shawn Walker get- ting one goal and one assist, while Barry Skinn netted a single mark- er. Shawn Vaughn picked up three assists. Jamie Wettlattler was the lone goal getter for the Normanby Rockets. Wingham took four of the six minutes in penalties handed out in the contest. • In a game played at the Lock - ridge Memorial Arena on Fcb. 4, the Atoms Bs fired five unan- swered sccond period goals to claim a 8-1 decision over Clifford. Marks scored throe goals and added an assist to lead the Wing - ham attack. Brett Coulthard, Shawn Walker, and Kyle Barlow had one goal and one assist each for the Atoms Bs with single markers netted by John Haines and Justin Holden. Gcoff Lindsay collected three assists with Barry Skinn earning a pair of helpers. Nathan MacTavish picked up a single assist. Martin Polfuss•' was the lone sniper for Clifford. Wingham was assessed 16 min- utes in penalties and Clifford was handed 18 minutes. t for the Mustangs with the Kris Kreiger hitting for 13 .points and Justin Tessier adding nine points. • Paul Renaud was the top' shoot- er in the game, getting 19 points for the Vikings. In the semi-final defensive struggle lastTuesday at the Wing - ham high school gymnasium, the senior Mustangs were up 8-4 after a quarter of play. At halftime, the Madill squad were in front by a 22-13 margin, and after three quar- ters of play Madill held a 28-18. McGlynn and Mick Olds paced the. Mustangs offence with 11 points apiece. Krieger added nine points and Tessicr hooped eight points. Bryan Allister was top shooter in the contest as he hit for 13 points for the Panthers. Dwayne McNab added seven points in a losing cause. The junior Mustangs were handed a one -point setback by South Huron Panthers of Exeter last Tuesday in semi-final compe- tition. Shawn Tilbury hit the rim with cmc second remaining in regula- tion time as the junior Mustangs fell 57-56 to the ,anthers. South Huron went on to capturti the county championship. The Mustangs were ahead by one after -a quarter of play, and trailed 30-29 at halftime, and were in front by a point after three peri- ods of play. Coach Steve Merrier said this was the type of game where the 'clock just ran out; and which ever team was in front when time ran out would be the winner. "This was an excellent game by all the players," he said. Mike Nolan was top shooter for the Mustangs has he collected 24 points. Meurer said Sbuth Huron were using a pressure double -team defence which meant the players had to find an open man, and No- lan was usually the open man. Huron champs...Madill Secondary School cap- tured the Huron County high school girls curling championship by going undefeated at the county playdowns. By winning the county title, the Madill rink advanced to the Huron -Perth cham- pionship held last Thursday in Stratford. Members of the rink include (frontfthird Tanya Kleist, and skip Lori Exel; (back) second Tenille Cranston, lead Krista Ritchie, and coach Bill Munro. Madill Girls Curling squad county champions The Madill girls curling team captured the Huron -Perth champi- onship last Thursday to advance to the WOSSA finals set for the London Curling Club, March 8-9. The Madill foursome of skip Lori Exel, third Tanya Kleist, sec- ond Tenille Cranston and lead Krista Ritchie scored a pair of vic- tories on the 'A' side of the Huron - Perth bonspiel to claim the cham- pionship. Stratford St Michael's was the first opponent for Madill with the Wingham high school rink claim- ing a 9-5 decision. Madill then watt up against Goderich and posted a 7-2 decision to win Hu- ron -Perth. 'Thc team played quite well," said coach Bill Munro. "They were consistent." The coach said the girls started off slow in both games which meant the games were close until the mid -point of the draw. "We just seemed to take over from the fourth end on," said Mun- ro.
