The Ironmen captured their
quarter -final series on Friday, by
scoring a 2-1 decision over the
Walkerton Blackhawks; in double
overtime. With the victory, the Ir-
onmen were able to win their se-
ries in three straight games.
Wingham opened the scoring in
the game at 1:57 of the first period
as Troy Fischer deflected a shot
from the point past Walkerton
goalie Denver England. Jeremy
Creeden also earned an assist.
However, tete Blackhawks con-
trolled the play the remainder of -
the period as they, directed 15
shots at Wingham goaleender
Adam Skillen. The Ironmen were
,able to .direct just five shots at
England.
Wingham successfully killed
off a pair of two -men short situa-

lead.
' With 7:27 remaining in the mid-
dle period, the Biackhawks evened
the game at 1-1 as Brad Loomis
deflected a shot past Skillen.
Late in the secAnd period, Troy
Fischer received a break away, but
was stopped by England. Chris
Fischer again seemed to be fight-
ing the puck, as he fed a pass in
the third period 'that would have
put in the clear, but he was unable
to control the puck and lost his
sc-oring-opportunity. •
Justin Murray was also stopped
from point blank range by Eng-
land as was rear guard Dcryk Has -
tie.
Skillen played strong in the
third period as the Blackhawks
again contolled the play, outshoot-
ing the Ironmen 12-6. However,
England also played a strong third
period, as the Ironmen scoring op-
portunities were from closer
range.
In the first 10 -minute overtime
session, both teams had scoring

chances, but it was the goalkcep-
ing.at both ends that kept the score
at one.
In the 20 -minute sudden -death:
overtime period, the Ironmen net-
ted the winning marker at 13:48 as
Ryan Gallaher led a rush from the
'blueline, fed the puck to Chris Fis-
. cher in the slot and he beat Eng-
land with •a, rising shot. Troy Fis-
cher also assisted.
Coach Bill Brown said Skillen
played a strong game m goal for
the Ironmen,especially in the first
periods and again in the overtime
sessions when Walkerton dominat-
ed the play. '
Even though Murray did not get
any points, the coach said it was
one of the best games he has ever
seen him play as an Ironmen.
The Ironmen took 13 of the 24
minor penalties assessed in the
game by referee Blake Moggy.
Wingham's Brent Robinson was
handed checking from behind
major and game misconduct while
the Blackhawks took a gime mis-
conduct and Jason Fosold was
handed a 10 -minute misconduct.

well in the second round. As they

them that, win or lose, they could
be very proud of their accomplish-
ment.
Midgets need a win
Wingham Lions. Club Midgets
had their backs up against the pro-
verbial wall going into last night's
game home game against Sca-
forth. The locals dropped the first
.two games of the best three of five
series by identical scores of 5-1,
and need a win to stay alive.
The Midgets lost 'the first game
of the series, played last 'Tuesday.
Seaforth scored first, about four
and a half minutcs into the game.
But Wingham's Kevin Love
chipped a shot over the diving net -
minder less than a minute later to
knot the game at one. Arley'Paut-

good enough for first place in their

They met Listowel in the semi-

games to advance to the final.

in two straight games.
Coach Nancy Stafford said they
were surprised that Listowel fin-

cause. they were the only team to
defeat the Mustangs.
"Listowel was otir toughest

five minutes into the second peri-
od on a short handed goal. They
took a 2-1 lead on a power play
four minutes later. The lead was
stretched to 3-1 when Wingham's
defence coughed up the puck to a
Scaforth player in the slot. And,.
Scaforth notched one more before
.the second period was over to
head into the third with a 4-1 lead. .
Wingham's lack of • punch on
the power play appeared to take
the sung out of any penalties Sea -

was scoreless, but a wild, and
wooly affair, right to the end.
Scaforth added their final mark-
er with about 35 seconds left to
play, on a break away.
Wingham drew 34 minutes in
penalties in the game, while Sea -
forth was handed 50, but that
didn't include the various miscon-
ducts received as a result of the
third period melee.
