Ironmen to face Black Hawks sults head north
The Wingham Ironmen will
face the Walkerton Blackhawks in
the first round of the Western Jun-
ior'C' Hockey 'League playoffs be-
girning Friday.
The Ironmen split a pair of
games on the weekend, while -the
Blackhawks just had the one
game, Sunday afternoon in Brus-
sels. Wingham could have
clinched fourth place had they
won both weekend contests.
A late third period defensive
breakdown by the Ironmen al-
lowed the Hanover Barons to eke
out a 4-3 decision over the Iron -
men Sunday afternoon at the.
Lockridge Memorial Arena. The
Ironmen downed third place Brus-
sels Bulls 7-3 on Friday.
Following a scoreless first peri-
od Sunday afternoon, the Barons
opened the scoring in the game at
10:32 of the middle frame as De-
vin Hastie found the range behind
Adarii Skillen" in the Wingham
goal
The Ironmen rebounded at
16:01 to even the score at one. Jer-
emy Creeden beat Hanover goal -
tender Greg Ritchie with help
from Justin Murray and Brad Rob-
inson.
The Wingham defence col-
lapsed early in the final period and
allowed the Barons °to get a two-
® man break away. As a result, the
Barons took a 2-1 lead as Hastie
netted his second goal for Hano-
ver.
The Barons took a 3-1 lead at
8:24 as the Wingham defensive
play again broke down in their
zone. Steve Barfootwas fed a pass
by Hastie and the Baron blasted
the puck past Skillen.

one goal back at 12:58 as he
jammed the puck under Ritchie

With 5:01 Left in the third peri-
od, the Ironmen evened the score
at three when Jason. Thompson
fired a shot from the top of the
face off circle that got past Ritch-
ie. Brett Sangster and Murray re-
ceived assists.
The Barons netted the winner at
18:38 as they got a two -on -one
with Paul Harrington's pass across
the crease bounced under Skillen
after deflecting off Thompson's
pad. The Ironmen were on the
power play at the time.
Wingham pulled Skillen with
1:11 remaining, in favor of the ex-
tra attacker, but were unable to net
the equalizer.
Skillen made 31 saves in the
Wingham goal and Ritchie turned
aside 36 Ironmen shots.
Wingham took four of 10 minor
penalties assessed by referee L.D.

as he beat Sanders from close
range. Brent Robinson and Hef-
fron assisted on the marker.
Brussels attempted a come
back, but fell one goal short. Brian
Zabel tallied the first Bulls goal at
8:26 as he beat Jason Reid with a
hard shot, after getting a pass out
from Greg McNevan. Peter Muld-
fer also assisted on the power play
marker. „
With 1:57 left to play in the sec-
ond period, Kevin Ball put the
Bulls one goal back as he took ad-
vantage of sloppy defensive play

were the Brussels goal getters.
Daryl Faust and Devin McAr-
thur scored two goals apiece for
the Blackhawks with Loomis net-
ting the winner.
Ryan Fisk was in goal for. the
Bulls with Dan Xintavelonis in net
for Walkerton. Each team had 32
shots in the game.
Brad Loomis's goal at 13:17 of
the third period lifted the Walker-
ton Blackhawks to a 5-4 decision
over Brussels Bulls in Western
Junior 'C' Hockey League play at

Reid made 30 saves for Wing -
ham and Sanders made 26 for -the
Bulls.
The Ironmen• took 14 of the 27
minor penalties assessed by refer-
ee Blake Moggy. Each team was
assessed a'five-minute major with
the Ironmen getting the only 10 -
minute misconduct and two of the
three game misconducts.
Belgrave Atoms post
two WOAA victories
The Belgrave Atoms posted two
more victories in WOAA local
league play last week.
Justin Campbell scored three
goals and added an assist as the
Atoms defeated Hensall 7-4, in a
game played at the Brussels -
Morris -Grey Community Centre.
Chad Cook contributed a pair of
'goals with Ken McCracken and
novice team call-up Nathan Spi-
vey added single -markers.
Also called -up from the novice
team were Scott Folkard and T.J.
Marks.
Belgrave led 3-2 after the first
period and were ahead 5-3 after
two periods of play.
In a game played in Brussels on
Jan. 21, the Belgrave Atoms tal-
lied four unanswered goals in the
third period to claim a 5-1, deci-
sion over Brussels.
Brussels led 1-0 after the first
period with Belgrave evening the
score in the middle period.
Cook and novice team call-up
Spivey scored two goals apiece for
Belgrave. Folkard, another novice
team call-up, added a single mark-
er. Mau Rochetta and Marks were
also ,called up from the novice
team.
Matt Bromley and McCracken
picked up single helpers. •
Travis Campbell was the goal,.
tender for Belgrave.
The Wingham Hawks were un-
successful at the inaugural Cam-
bridge Roadrunners girls hockey
tournamentheld on the weekend.
In the team's first game of the
Ontario Women's Hockey Associ-
ation (OWHA) tournament, the
Hawks were doubled up by Oak-
ville, 4-2.
Heide Meier scored Wingham's
first goal, in the opening period,
with .help, from Jeni Campbell and'
Lauren Pander. Sarah McNichol
tallied an unassisted goal in the
third period for the Hawks.
Amy Bell scored two for Oak-
ville with Leslea Laughlin and Al-
ison Goodman adding singles. The
teams were tied at 1-1 after the
first period with Oakville holding
a 2-1 lead after two periods.
In the Hawks' second game,
against Barrie, Wingham was
handed a 5-1 setback. Bethany
Lindsay was the lone goal getter
for Wingham. Jill Van barn and
McNichol assisted on the second
period marker.
Ashlee Gowan scored three
goals for Barrie with Jody Ryan
and Lindsay Hollinger adding sin-
gles.
Barrie led 1-0 after ,one period
and were in front 4-1 going into
the third period.
In the team's final game, Co-
burg blanked the Hawks 2-0, al-
tfiough the Wingham girls did put
the puck in the net.
The goal was disallowed be-
cause the referee stopped the play
because he apparently thought the
Coburg goalie had trapped the
puck, when it was already behind
her in the net.
Karen Melfort and Karen Mil-
lard scored first period goals for
Coburg.
Cindy Freiburger played all
three games in net for the Hawks.

action on Friday as they host Hon-
`eywood at the Lockridge Memori-
al Arena in Wingham, beginning
at.4:30 p.m.

reach final game
Wingham IDA Atom Bs
reached the final of the Walkerton
Atom tournament on the weekend,
but fell to the Tavistock Lighting
4-2.'
Derek Marks and Geoff Lindsay
scored one goal apiece for Wing -
ham. Brett Coulthard assisted on
both Wingham markers.
Brad Witzel scored two goals
for Tavistock with Cody Atwell
and Greg Shewfelt netting singles.
Coulthard and Shawn Walker
scored three goals apiece to lead
Wingham to a 9-0 decision over
Woolwich Country Cafe.
Barry Skinn, Kyle Barlow and
John Haines contributed single
markers. Justin Holden picked up
a pair of assists.
Goalie Kate Lane recorded the•
shut out and picked up an assist.
Wingham led 2-0 after the first
period and were in front 4-0 after
two periods of play.

Wingham on Jan. 25, in a WOAA

Skaters take part in
annual club competition
The Wingham Figure Skating Club hekld its club
competition on Jan. 23 at the Lockridge Memorial
Arena.
This is an annual competition in which the skaters
have an opportunity to try out their skills against the
friends in the club.
