Ironmen tie Patriots;
lose to Black Hawks
Atter coming back to gain a 5-5
draw with league -leading Mount
Forest Patriots on Friday, the
Wingham Ironmen fell one goal
short in their second comeback
bid, Sunday afternoon, against the
Walkerton Blackhawks.
The Ironmen were never in
front in their Western Junior 'C'
Hockey League contest at the
Lockridge Memorial Arena Sun-
day. Thy Blackhawks opened the
scoring and never trailed as they
edged the Ironmen 4-3.
The lronmez were forced to
play catch-up hockey throughout
the contest, and it finally cost
them, as the Blackhawks wcre
able to take a two -goal lead near
the midway mark ot�the third peri-
od. /
Brad Hayterore Walkerton a
1-0 lead at 4:01 f the opening pe-
riod as his shot from close range
beat caught Adam Skillen by sur-
prise.
Justin Murray, who enjoyed' a
big game with three points, evened
the score for Wingham at the 14
minute mark as he scored from a
goalmouth scramble. Jonathan
Lane received the assist on the
power play goal.
However, the Blackhawks were
able to regain the lead before the
end of the period as DJ. Selkirk
tucked the puck past Skillen at
15:35.
Early in the second period, Troy
Fischer was sent in on a partial
break away, but was stopped by
Walkerton netminder Denver Eng-
land.

The Ironmen were able to pull
even with the Blackhawks at 9:07
of the middle frame. Murray net-
ted his second of the game after
being set up by Kyle Wheeler and
Jeff King.
With 3:10 remaining in the peri-
od, Walkerton again took the lead
as Tim Warrilow put the puck past
Skillen.
Devon McArther gave. the
Mackbawks a 4-2 advantage at
9:24 of the third period as he lifted
the puck over a fallen Skillen.
The Ironmen made the game
close at 18:57 as Lane beat Eng-
land with a shot from the point.
Murray and Troy Fischer received
assists.

Coach Bill Brown called a time
out with 33 seconds to go. The Ir-
onmen attempted to pull goalie
Skillen, in favor of an extra attack-
er, but the Blackhawks kept the
puck in the Wingham zone.
Wingham was finally able to
get Skillen pulled, but there was
about 10 seconds left to play.
Skillen made 27 saves in the
Wingham goal and England
stopped 24 Ironmen drives.
The Ironmen were assessed four
of the 12 minor penalties called by
referee Tom Gillespie. Walkerton
took the lone game misconduct
handed out.
in Mount Forest Friday eve-
ning, the Ironmen needed a four -
goal third period to gain the tie
with the Patriots.
Mount Forest led 2-0 after the
first period and were ahead 3-1 go-
ing into the final period.
Three straight goals by Jeremy
Creeden actually gave the Ironmen

a temporary 4-3 lead. However,
Mount Forest scored twice in 14
seconds to take a 5-4 lead.
Troy Fischer evened the score
at five with 47 seconds remaining
in the contest. Fischer concluded
the game with a goal and three as-
sists.
Kyle Wheeler netted thefirst
Wingham goal and also earned a
pair of assists. Deryk Hastie, Chris
Fischer, and Murray received sin-
gle helpers.
Paul Galbraith and Jeff Rahn
had two goals and two assists each
for Mount Forest. Derek Watson
netted a single marker.
Skillen made 31 saves in the
Wingham goal and Jon Bciscnthal
turned aside 33 Ironmen shots. -a
The Ironmen have two games
remaining in the regular schedule,
bothg at home. Wingham takes on
Brussels BulLs at 8:30 p.m. Friday
and then tangles with Hanover
Barons at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Optimist Atoms take two
Wingham Optimist Atoms post-
ed a pair of victories on the week-
end.
Playing at the Lockridge Me-
morial Arena on Sunday, the At-
oms scored a 4-2 decision over
Seaforth.
Craig Marks tallied a pair of
goals for Wingham with Kent
Readman and Shawn Walker add-
ing singles. Kent McPherson and
Matt Dinning picked up two as-
sists apiece with single helpers be-
ing earned by Jamie Chester and
Curtis Knight.
Scott Stapleton was in goal for
the Optimists.
Playing in Monkton on Satur-
day, the Optimists scored a 6-1 de-
cision over Elma-Logan.
Zack O'Krafka and Marks
scored two goals each for Wing -
ham with Dinning and Jarred Ri-
ley netting single markers. Read -
man and McPherson received two
assists each with Knight, Chester,
Jake Henderson and Garrett Skinn
earning a single helper.
Zane Davies was in goal for
Wingham.
Ryan Buchanan was the lone
goal getter for Eima-Logan.
The Optimists were at home last
night against Clinton..

Belgrave Atoms
Tate Belgrave Atoms scored a
pair of victories in recent WOAA
local league play.
Playing at Huron Park on Jan.
14, the Atoms scored a 5-4 deci-
sion with Chad Cook netting the
winning goal in the third period.
Assisting on the winning goal
were Garreu Knight and Justin
Campbell.
The teams were tied at 2-2 after
the first period and at 4-4 after two
periods of play.
Cook finished the contest with
four goals and one assist. tamp -
bell had one goal and four assists.
Knight picked up three helpers in
the game.
The Atoms were in Brussels on
Friday the 13th, and is was bad
luck for the host team as Belgrave
scored a 10-2 victory.
Belgrave held a 4-0 lead after
the first period and were in front
by a comfortable 7-2 margin after
two periods. Belgrave added three
more unanswered markers in the
third period.
Scoring for the Atoms in the
fust period were Cook.from Dev-
on Moffatt, Jim Wray from Camp-
bell, Campbell from Wray, and
Cook from Campbell.
Second period scorers for Bel -
grave were Cook unassisted, Mof-
fatt from Cook, and Campbell un-
assisted.
