Midgets down Lucknow with shortened _roster Wingham Lions Club Midgets kept themselves 'tuned up'with an exhibition game in Lucknow be- tween Christmas and New Year's. Even with a shortened line-up of nine skaters and a goaltender, the game went into the club's win col- umn. With both regular goalies work- ing holiday shifts, the Midgets got able fill-in support between the pipes from Bantam netminder Rob Warwick, who backstopped the Midgets to a 4-2 win. A couple of defenceman teamed up on the first goal of the game - Joel Pegg scored it, asisste dby Jeff King - to give Wingham a 1- 0 lead halfway through the first period. Lucknow tied it just a couple of minutes later, but Kevin Love put Wingham ahead, 2-1, with an unasissted goal in the final minute of the opening frame. Lucknow evened the score at two with a power play goal in the first minute of the second period. But, that was to be their last 'dent- ing of the [wince' for the game. Wingham's King scored the eventual winner halfway through the second period, assisted by Gary Skinn. Then Skinn scored a goal himself, assisted by Travis Baier, to close out the second peri- od with Wingham ahead 4-2. The third period was scoreless for both teams, but didn't lack for activity around the penalty box, as nine of the game's 13 penalties were called in the third, including,. a couple of game misconducts, one to each team. The Midgets were at home last night against Port Elgin, and then travel to Clinton on Sunday and to Milverton on Jan. 15, for what ap- pears to be the teams final games of the regular schedule. Hawks edged out of bronze medal Tne Wingham Hawks travelled to Mississauga last week to com- pete in a Ontario Women's Hock- ey Association (OWHA) Pee Wee- B tournament. The Hawks reached the bronze medal game of the tournament, but came out on the short side of a 3-1 final score. Wingham opened the tourna- ment on a successful note as they downed the Mississauga Chiefs 3- 1. Courtney Reid netted the first Hawks goal with help. from Heidi Meier and Tammy Walker. Sarah McNichol tallied the next two Wingham goals with assists being received by Jill Van Dam and Jen- ni Campbell. The Hawks played Burlington to a 3-3 draw in the team's second game of the tourney. McNichol scored the first two goals for the Hawks with Ashley Campbell assisting on both mark- ers and Jenni Campbell earning one assist. Reid tallied the third Wingham goal with help from Jenni Camp- bell. The third game for the Hawks was against Sarnia, with the squad from the petroleum -industry city scoring a 2-0 decision. The set- back put the Hawks in the bronze medal game against Oakville. Ashley Campbell was the lone goal getter for the Hawks with Be - Wthany Lindsay and Walker earning the assists. Hawks' coach Dan Campbell said everyone played well for' the Hawks. The team went into the tournament with only nine skaters and a goalie. The next OWHA tournament for the Hawks is Jan. 27-29 when they are in Cambridge. The Hawks return to Mississauga in April for the OWHA provincial champion- ships. The Crusaders held a slim 3-2 advantage after 40 minutes of play, but the Rocks replied with three unanswered goals in the final period to post a 5-3 victory, in the game played at the Elora Arena. Getting the markers for the Cru- saders were Brad Carter, Ron Strome, and Brian Campbell. The Crusaders were in Durham on Friday for a game against the Thundercats. The teams were tied at one after the first period with Durham holding a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes of . play. The Thundercats scored a 5-2 victory. Scoring for the Crusaders were Steve Prim and Brad Carter. Rob Leblanc scored twice for Durham with singles being added Steven Becker, Paul Nixon and Todd Stoddart. Senior 'B' The Lucknow Lancers travelled to Teeswater Friday evening to face off against the Falcons in a Senior 'B' contest. The Lancers took a 3-0 lead in the first period and were ahead 6-0 going into the third period. The Falcons struck for three goals, be- fore the Lancers netted their final marker.
