Mr. and Mrs. Bill Soper will be spending the Christmas weekend with their son, Jim Soper at Bolton. • Sandra Montoux of Stratford spent the weekend with her father, Don Montoux. Weekend visitors with Carl and Joan Stewart were Greg and Cindy Stewart of Waterloo, Doug and Dorothy Stewart of Kitchener. Trinity Church, Fordwich Pined with St. Stephen's Church on Sun- - day morning, Dec. 17 for a joint ser- vice of lessons and carols. Later a potluck lunch was enjoyed by all. Afternoon UCW group celebrates the season FORDWICH—The afternoon unit of the Fordwich United Church Women met at the church school rooms Dec 14. Mrs. Glenn Johnston convened a delicious turkey dinner, enjoyed by all. Unit leader Mrs. Scott Clarkson Turkey dinner served at Fordwich ACW FORDWICH—Trinity ACW met at the Fordwich Hall after a deli- cious turkey dinner served by Mrs. Leon Schneider and Mrs. Gerald Kennedy and their helpers. Following the dinner, Rev. Bren- da Clarice gave the devotions. Roll call, "Your Christmas gift from Grartma" was answered by 43 with many amusing answers. The financial report was given by Mrs: Millie Nixon. Boxes will be made up for shut-ins this week, organized by Joan Rowley and Mil- lie Nixon. unirch calendars were distribut- ed among members. Carols were sung with Mrs. Irene Judge at the piano. Rev. Clarke sang "Bring a Torch", leanetta" and slsobella", accompanied by Irene Judge on the piano. Valeta Sothern and Ev Harrold sang a comic duet which brought a few laughs. The meeting closed with all repeating grace. Secret Pals for 1989 were then revealed and an exchange of gifts followed. Each one received a Secret Pal for 1990. Gifts were also given to be distributed at the Ford- wich Nursing Home The January meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Ruby Arm- strong. Officers for 1990 are chosen for UCW unit BELGRAVE—The Christmas meeting of the afternoon unit was held at the home of Mrs. Jim Hunter earlier this month with 14 in attendance. Sarah Anderson was in charge and opened with the quo- tation, Inailre 1?egi.nninga!herel.47,4, The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given and visits to the sick and shut-in recorded. The officers for 1990 are as fol- lows: leader, Mrs. Anderson; trea- surer, Margaret Taylor; secretary, !Helen Martin; program convenor, Janisa Coultes; cards for sick and shut-in, Olive Bolt and pianist, Mrs. Glenn Coultes. Several hymns were sung and a • nativity prayer read in unison. Mrs. Bolt gave a Christmas message and •meditation rafterawhieh a.tnather hymn was then read more Christmas excerpts. Janisa Coultes gave a couple of Christmas readings and Mrs. Hunter read a poem she had received that morning. A number ofChristmas carols were then sung. The UCW prayer and Lord's Prayer concluded the meeting. Christmas goodies, tea and coffee, were served by the hostess. Candle celebration held at Belgrave WMS • BELGRAVE—The Women's Mis- sionary Society held its meeting Dec 11 at the home of Hazel Dal - Kinsmen hold turkey bingo • BELGRAVE—The Kinsmen club /mid its annual turkey bingo Dec. 14 in the Women's Institute Hall. A good crowd was on hand with turkeys being won by: Hazel Haines, Mrs. Jim Coultes, Bonnie Pletch, Brian Machan, Rob Ander- son, Debbie Machan, Laura John- i-ston, Edna McClellan, Kim Rintoul and Isabel Campbell. The share-the-weath games were ;won by Mrs. Pletch and Debbie Reid, Lorraine Cook and Mrs. Campbell. A children's game, with prizes donated by Mrs. Campbell, was won by Sabena Black rymple, Blyth. Freda Scott opened with a call to worship and a hymn was sung. The Christmas program from the Glad Tidings was followed with Lottie Scott, Alice Nicholson, Mar- garet Siertsema and Ivy Cloakey taking part and three candles were lit by Freda Scott. Rev. Carolyn MacAvoy told the legend of the Christmas apple and a hymn was sung. The roll call was answered with a verse on Christ. Mrs. Dalrymple read a story from a book by Peter Marshall and several ladies read Christmas stories or poems. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were given and it was announced the annual meeting will be in Wingham on Jan. 22. The hostess served lunch and a social time was enjoyed. Roll call, a Christmas verse, was answered by 16 members. Some items of business were discussed. Mrs, Don Beck, Mrs. Anson Rut - tan and Miss Minnie McElwain pre- sented the program and worship service, choosing the theme "Let's stop, look and listen at Christmas". She reminded members to stop and remember the first Christmas, the meaning of Christmas, and think of friends and family, the friendless and needy. Let's look, she said, at the Christ- mas spirit, the expressions of joy over the birth.of Jesus, and the gifts of wisdom, kindness and love. Finally, she reminded, let's listen for the sounds. of Christmas, the carols, the promise of peace in the Christmas story. Tapes of Christmas carols sung by Helen Battle provided appropri- ate backgroulid music during the presentation. Following a sing song of carols, the meeting closed with "0 Little Town of Bethlehem." YOUNG VIRTUOSOS --Lesley Pike, Andrea McBride and Mary Lisle played "Silent ISTight".on the piano at the recent Christmas concert at Wingham Public School. • Churches combine for carol FORDWICH—A Christi Carol Service was held at Brethren in Christ Church, Fordwich, Sunday Dec. 17, sponsored by the Howick Ministerial Association. An organ prelude by Rev. Jeff Hawkins and Mrs. Leone Byer was followed by a message of welcome by Pastor Charles Byer. Rev. Brenda Clarke led in prayer. Responsive reading and interces- sory prayer was conducted:by Rev. Paul Chambers. -Pastor Byer gave the message on "Emmanuel". The Hymn, "0 Come All ye Faithful" was sung by the Ministers and spouses. The Christmas carol Slide presen- , service tation was given by Rev. Don Beck with Mrs. Beck commentating.
